It's not that great. Some unfinished, half-baked, un-explained ideas and then everyone has fun guessing and filling in the blanks. Good fun but not super deep or genius-level writing.

That is a remarkably coherent attempt to 'explain' the overall structure and themes of the books, while acknowledging that no complete explanations exist for it.

That's an interesting way of looking at it, that there will always be a void between "the truth" and Wolfe's book. There is a brain melting concept in here that suggests information and culture echos through time because of Severian time travelling. Example - Dr Talos and Baldanders may be the origin of Frankenstein, Severian travels back to the 10th Century and probably told others about his strange "friends" in the future, that seed of an idea is planted and remains in the zeitgeist and eventually pops out as Shelley's book.

The slippery nature of “The Truth” in these books and in life is what imbues everything with that druggie metaphysical feeling. Which I think is so amazing that that can be done with words and plot. So rad 🌊🏄‍♂️🪷

Severian's shaping of his own world is so deep that even the soldiers at Saltus sing about him. Each stanza of the erentarii's ditty is about stages of Severian's life, something I recently discovered. It may mean that some people in the army still follow the Conciliator story (or it has become just a song) since it was soldiers that Severian handed the Claw to in UotNS. The book is layered like an onion indeed.

@@tasosalexiadis7748 "Born beneath a shooting star" refers to the White Fountain that the Yesodians sent towards Urth all the way from Apu-Punchau's time so that was the first thing that clued me in. It unifies everything. And the White Fountain is Severian's star. Stanza one is about his mom, her taking care of him, and her hopes/dreams for him, before he was handed over to the torturers after she was captured and discovered pregnant (torturers only accept children from pregnant clients). Stanza two is about the torturers training Severian. "Knocked my head... mustn't whimper at a scar" Stanza three is about Severian meeting the Green Man, "the mage" who predicts his time in the North and the War with the Ascians. Stanza four is about when Severian met the Autarch, the "Shepherd" of the Commonwealth who tells him of the test on Yesod, "To Dawn-Gate where the angels are." Gene Wolfe was a genius. So much right in front of your face but it just slips by you. Makes for good re-reads.

Dude Moid, sometimes you just sort of ramble. But yeah the reason the book is so good is because humans are predisposed to look for meaning, and the book is layered grand concepts of asking what does it all mean. That's it that's the whole things in a sentence. That it doesn't need to mean anything it's an exercise in asking. Bravo. Standing Ovation.

O.K...this gives me a chance to point out another triple bluff that you & Alzabo boys didnt catch back then. ( Maybe you did, & I remember wrong 😁) It"s about Jonas. He IS human, downloaded into robot body and repaired with someone elses human parts. Remember when we learn that first expansion into the universe was done by humans who downloaded their personality into machines/robots & that they left their "ability to feel emotions" with Hierodules on Earth , because they considered it unnecessary weight & bother ? Then they came back to a much changed earth , very empty & sad , and asked Hierodules for emotional part of their personality back. So, it kind of stands to reason that after living for a looong time as emtpy unfeeling husks, once they got their emotions back they went little crazy with it ( Dr.Talos with his art & Jonas with his crush on Jolenta ) i"m so glad I read one more time with you & Alzabo guys...caught plenty new stuff I didn"t before.. Its time for Long and Short Sun books soon. aint it ? Great video as always Moid. Cheers !

Whoh! That actually makes a lot of sense to me. I’ve read and listened to this epic several times and I really like this interpretation. The timeline and physical model you made there is what really helped it make sense to me. I realized that the Amazon and South American were a big part of the setting but I don’t recall any references to the Inca. Can anyone tip me off here, please? =] Another book I read over and over again is Moby Dick I’m sure GW is influenced by Melville and I see it most clearly in the way GW writes about travel by boat. Easily my favorite and the most pleasurable part of GWs writing. I reread and repeat those chapters whenever the pop up. Anyone else digging that connection? 🌊🏄‍♂️🪷

You asked for the opinion about Gene Wolfe. Ich read his famous books almost 40 years ago and I have been fascinated then. But in the decades afterwards whenever I though about those books I realized that they support a special kind of conservatism I have increasingly grown out of. The same applies, by the way, to Orson Scott Card.

That's interesting. I get that totally, but can't shake my obsession with Wolfe. Same with G.K. Chesterton, I mislike the political implications of his rural utopianism (which oddly has a fair amount in common with William Morris's socialist version) but love the intelligence of his writing. I'd still rather be ruled by that kind of blinkered but essentially well intentioned right wing wannabe theocracy than the money grabbing philistines in power in the UK right now (or certainly than be part of the ignorant mob being manipulated by Trump et al across the pond.) Sorry if that sounds cynical. I totally understand what you're saying though, and I can't stand Orson Scott Cad (sic).

I have just finished the shadow of the torturer and absolutely loved it. Will be reading the next one in the series soon. But please just answer me one question. Although you eventually realise the book is set in the future, is there a reason why civilisation seems to have taken up some ancient forms of organisation, such as guilds, and also their language sounds somehow antiquated. I love it. It is not to say I don’t. But at first I thought the book was set in, like 13 century England. Are we ever gonna find out whether they purposely dug into the past to take up some ancient customs, while also letting technology evolve? Thank you for your videos.

Yea it seems the sun is not dying the natural death we can now predict , but rather has a black hole in it , whether this is due to sentient or astronomical intervention. Personally I do not think of this as hard sf at all. Not even space opera- more religious science fantasy, like Dune or Hyperion. Thats not meant as an insult either, while I do like some hard SF it is by no means the "best" subgenre imo and often eschews good storytelling, characterization and other literary standards for the focus of technical concepts. Id also say this is very literary SF.

Because yeah, even if the brunt of BotNS takes place even a couple million years in the future, that's not long enough on the astronomical time table for our sun to be that sick. THAT should take at least another billion or two years, right?
