The Book of 3 Breaths - An Artist's Book Flip Through
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Hi, Michelle Walker here from Serenity Studios and in this video, I share with you a new project I've just completed - The Book of 3 Breaths. I run through how I made this artist's book and its internal signatures (booklets), as well as some of the painting and collage techniques I used throughout.
I repurposed a hard cover book I found at a charity shop. I cut the internal pages out and made 2 signatures (booklets) from watercolour paper. I painted and collaged the cover and made pieces in silver for the closing mechanism.
The concept of title came to me back in June, when like many people around the world including my part of Australia was in lockdown for Covid and the Black Lives Matter protests were happening in the US and Australia. I was also at that time, in an art group called "Breathing the Land" with Virginia Reid (Byron Community College). It occurred to me that we were in a time of corona virus, which is a respiratory problem, the Black Lives Matter protests, which was anchored around George Floyd's 'I can't breath' statement and the 3rd breath came from the art course I was doing with some fellow artists called "Breathing the Land". So it felt like these 3 elements of my life were talking about the breath, and the breath is such an important connector of life in this physical body with our creative selves.
I took the idea that each opening set of pages in the book to be something I would do within 3 breaths, so they were very simple moves. I didn't succeed in terms of keeping them so minimal that I could complete them within the time it took me to take 3 breaths, but I really enjoyed paring them down so they were simplified.
This project was inspired by Adriana Ameigh (ameighart.com) a fellow member of Alice Sheridan's Connected Artist Club - thank you, Adriana.

Usually, i am averse to "cannabalizing" books to reuse (this applies to all books, even ones that I dislike- it is a quirk of mine), but, in this case, I think that you have made something extraordinarily beautiful! You have taken a bound book and taken it to the level of a magnificent work of art. I may have to reasses my opinion on reusing already bound books. Brava, madame, brava!

I love this so much! I started painting in old books several years ago and just started making zines out of old papers. I also went back to school and have learned printmaking and I am trying to mix them all. I love book art! Thank you for sharing your beautiful book and for sharing the meaning behind it. It is just beautiful!

That book is without doubt the best handmade book I’ve seen, and I’ve seen quite a few! I love your colour choices, collage and mark making - perfection. Unfortunately, I’m not able to hear your thought process and explanation, because I can’t listen to narrative when there’s music playing at the same time. It’s nice that I was actually able to read about it though. x x

@@MichelleWalkerArt I have just had to watch this again and again. I love how the concept informs the art work and vice versa. This book feels so pure and rare and considered and the way the three breaths theme is woven through the elements is both breathtaking and yet also breathes life through the whole project. It is crafted in such a delicate and sensitive way, it literally blows me away. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your beautiful work x

This is a stunning piece of fine art. I dabble in this and that media but I always come back to making artists books. I just finished a one signature book that I made for a friend, it was based on an Edwardian aesthetic . What I love about your book is the cohesiveness of the theme you've used two major elements the color blue and the U shape and added what I would call some commentary (white gel handwritings, some rust accents, etc.) that add interest. I could talk about piece forever and I know I will be revisiting it frequently, it touched me so deeply. I have subscribed and belled your name and look forward to spending a few days looking at all your work. Best wishes. PS I didn't mention the origin of the title because this comment will end up being a book but suffice it to say BRAVA!

Thank you. They are handmade from fine silver.
Since it is essentially a book of art pieces, how much would something like this sell for?
@MichelleWalkerArt
5 ай бұрын
That’s a good question and difficult to answer as I have never considered selling this one. It was my first artist’s book and I have a general rule that I keep for myself my first of anything I make. That said, if I look at the no. of page spreads as each being artworks in their own right, and the no. of hours/days that went into the making over several months… the asking price would be many thousand. My artists books from a single sheet of watercolour paper (different KZread video) sell for about $500.
Beautiful!
