The BoilerMaker Surface by Blichmann Engineering: A Hands-On Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Blichmann Engineering released their latest product; an easy to clean electric kettle called the BoilerMaker Surface. Blichmann had sent me a couple of their earliest models to try in advance of their product launch; one prototype TC kettle and one pre-production NPT kettle.
I've brewed with one of them already and will now provide you my opinion on this exciting new product.
For those looking to see the new Blichmann BoilerMaker Surface in action, you can see it in my recently published American Light Beer video: • Better Than Bud Light:...

I also plan to use it for sous vide for larger cuts or quantities of food. Up till now, I'd either use the BrewEasy upper mashtun kettle to hold the food as shown in this Prime Rib video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZaI1dWudtrMgs4.html), use a Spike Solo Mash Basket as shown in this corn blanching video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/haWGz6h9qa69eqQ.html), a Grainfather as in these Italian Beef videos (kzread.info/dash/bejne/l3yio8uccpmXiZs.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4aplreSmr28kcY.html), or a sous vide stick as shown in this video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYV3z6avXZiwhc4.html). Now, I might be able to getaway only using the Surface due to the ultra low watt element separated by the kettle bottom and not melt my sous vide bags.

@@BEERNBBQBYLARRY Yeah, I had some last-minute edits, and my brain kept wanting me to call it a BoilMaker instead of a BoilerMaker...it just killed me to realize I did that. (Last-minute changes included pricing and adding some text that G2 systems can't be modified into BoilerMaker Surface systems, as I was told some people had reached out to Blichmann shortly after the launch asking if they could modify their G2 systems.) This is a pretty neat kettle and one that would likely be my number 1 suggestion now for those that want to E-brew-in-a-bag. The only "con" for me is I prefer to have a modular setup where I can get off the shelf parts, so the proprietary element in this case makes it not for me. But I know I'm in the minority there and this looks like a really great solution for the majority of people.

I agree. I'm not into proprietary systems either. Replacement part availability is a real PITA especially if it is made overseas. The bonded element is a concern but not as much as a product made overseas and not as much for a well established company. I've asked them about it's reliability. They stated that due to the built-in thermal protection, the simplicity of the design, and that they already do this for their Anvil line, it should not fail. They believe it so much that they offer a 5-year warranty on it.

Thanks for the great review Larry, as always. This new kettle design completely mitigates the issues I saw with the BrewEasy and should make that system really good now. You can now put the vast majority of the wort where it should be - with the grain. Mash temp control might be better too with less thermal mass in the kettle. I agree with your cleaning comments too. My flat bottomed all-in-one is much easier to clean than my Spike kettle with a heating element. Nice review!

Looks like a few of them would make a pretty clean setup! The pricing is almost double the cost of the boil coil, but not that crazy if you're buying the brew commander anyway and just look at total price ($150ish extra to get the brew commander and surface setup as compared to a 20g kettle with brew commander and boil coil). My next big upgrade will be moving to larger kettles to do 10 gallon batches. I currently use a knockoff grainfather to great success which already has a hidden surface heating element. I use a steam condenser to brew indoors while reducing the necessary wattage. I'd be slightly hesitant to purchase this given how expensive it is, but seeing at its stainless, welded and made in the USA, It's easy to see why it is expensive. At my job, I wouldn't even blink at the cost given how much fabricators cost, but it's a bit different when you're not spending company money ;) That being said, I've upgraded to the Blichmann Tri clamp Riptide per your recommendation and really enjoyed it. I will likely get Blichmann for my next system given their reputation for quality and customer service. I mash and boil in the same kettle by pumping the wort into a separate kettle, sparge, then remove the grain/false bottom and rinse kettle. I started doing this because I didnt enjoy lifting a grain basket out, and I enjoy the benefits of direct heating the mash tun with recirculation. I'm thinking this system could also use their false bottom to achieve the same result? Only thing I need now is a stainless jacketed unitank with glycol...

Your process sounds very similar to the budget DIY K-RIMS setup I did here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mpiHts6cn92ddaw.html I used a mashtun cooler and recirculated through it via the heated kettle similar to how my BrewEasy works. Perhaps their could be a BrewEasy in your future using one of these new kettles as your boil kettle as I just did in my 'Better Than Bud Light' video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4ipl9yJZs6ad9o.html I, too, dislike lifting heavy hot mash baskets/bags. @@BlichmannEngineering Why not make a malt pipe for this? Then people can add the pump and controller and basically it's an all in one option, if you make a hop filter that fits with the basket. Really don't understand why you haven't done so yet 😅 The grainfather and brewzillas and so on is great, but it's basically just modded water heaters with so so quality. I can just talk for myself, but I don't want to pay the prices they charge for those, and with no or weak handles that break. I bought the OG grainfather, but sold it because it was just not practical, and awkward to empty and clean. Had a Boilermaker G1 that I loved, but for us Europeans that mostly brew electrical, it was not good for not being able to use it on induction. So a blichmann kettle with a basket that matches the quality of your kettles, now that I would not feel cheated for paying overprice for cheap solutions. It's nice that you made this easy to clean kettle, but let's get rid of the other kettle on top for us that don't think it's needed. What I'm really saying is that I want an all in one with your quality 😅 yes, there is the Anvil line, but I don't like the high and narrow format. A wider kettle is just better, and with a pump and controller you can unattach, there is no worry about cleaning, or stupid built in pumps that break or leak, or hanging controllers, or controllers in the bottom that don't like boilovers or water.

It still looks a whole lot (to me) like a fancier grainfather. I am not sure if the time savings for cleaning offset the possibility of the element going south are worth it having had to replace the board on a brewzilla. And although you dont have an immersion element to clean, i do see scorching on the bottom of my brewzilla so it looks like you are just swapping not having to clean one (the element) for the other (the bottom) I obviously have not used it but I am not entirely convinced that (for the 10 gallon version) this offers a whole lot more than a 240v induction cooktop and a normal boilermaker. I personally ( and other can disagree) that bottom drains would make bigger contributions to reducing hands on cleaning time.

Depends on which hassle you prefer to deal with: 1) Cleaning a gunked up element. 2) Repeatedly turning a large heavy kettle upside down to dump out remaining gunk with each rinse, washing, rinse, etc. I’d like to have both ideally, but given that there is nothing that does both, I choose the ease of not having to clean the element. Plus, without having a floor drain in my garage, the Spike Tank isn’t so useful since it’ll pour all over my garage floor unless I rig up a hose to direct the flow to a nearby low rise pan.

I spent around $2600, which was a LOT for me. I can't say if I would have spent the extra $400 for the Surface then, but with it not being repairable, I probably would not have.

Looks like when you customize it's coming in around $700. Only available in 240 which is a problem for a lot of home brewers only doing 5 gal batches. Also the reset port on the bottom is a bad design. The Mash & Boil used to do that and got tons of complaints because you can't get to it when the kettle is full of boiling wort. It looks more solid and well built than other systems though - for which Blichmann is known. They should make an Anvil cheaper version without the triclamps, and 120V.

I have the same concern about resetting the thermal protection. I may do something similar to what others have done where they place these kettles on top of a crate or table with a thru hole to allow access to the reset button. Since I use Blichmann KettleKarts, I might drill a thru hole in the center of the cart to do something similar.

@NWsmallbatchBrewing Interesting thought about Anvil...stay tuned. :). Preston our Engineering Manager can add to why we specifically designed the reset port placement on the bottom of the kettle. "The reset port is really just protection from dry run. If you run the kettle dry it's already empty. The all-in-ones are subject to some nuisance tripping because they are a much higher watt density element, but we expect this one to not provide any nuisance tripping when there is liquid in it because we are spreading the heat across a much large surface area. It will not scorch like the all-in-ones because of a lower watt density. It’s not made easily accessible because we don’t anticipate anyone needing to use it." Hope that was helpful and please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions. We are glad to help!

Probably. I assume it'll be better than having an element inside the kettle that can melt a nylon bag. The element is underneath the kettle separated by the bottom wall which spreads the heat over a wider area than any element inside the kettle. That would be a better question for Blichmann to answer more affirmatively.

I love your videos man but I disagree with you on this, I personally like the idea of a replacement element. Also I run a pbw solution for fifteen minutes at 160 degree through my kettle after a brew day for cleaning. My element looks perfect after a year of use. I appreciate your review and honesty of the product but I myself don't see its worth it. That's just my opinion, cheers man I always appreciate your videos

Sounds like you've had more success at getting them cleaned than I have over the years. However, even if running PBW solution would work reliably for me, that is additional time spent cleaning thus prolonging my brew day that is saved by having this vessel. I agree with the desire for a replaceable element. Has been one of the reasons I'm not too fond of proprietary all(almost)-in-one brew systems. It's a tradeoff of cleaning ease versus risk of the element going bad. Getting older and not wanting to be scrubbing away bent over a kettle, I've chosen ease of cleaning.

@@BEERNBBQBYLARRY definitely man, it's all what works for you correct???? I guarantee you one thing with brewing is your opinions on things evolve. It's kind of like when you get a cooler system and think I'll never hi upgrade or change everything is perfect 😂 but you end up changing up things. I've had good luck with my element with pbw recirculation, plus I'm usually doing other things while I'm cleaning the kettle up, but regardless I can definitely see the allure of this new kettle. My opinion might change in a few years but for now I'm happy with my system, either way cheers man I appreciate your channel

This product is a step back. Shows how out of touch blichmann is now. It's forcing their great kettles into an all in one territory (non replaceable element) trying to sell ppl on easy clean up when in reality an element isnt that hard to clean with pbw (well, maybe the boil coil is). Try scraping a foundry bottom. Larry, love ya but your positives are - added height and room for storage? "with the boil coil removed save on storage space"😂😂😂 I dont think of that when brewing or my kettle as a storage unit lol the compact and this seem to be missing the mark
