    @@VespaPhil It comes from the ignition switch, or in the bmw in the video from the button, it sends 12v to the starter motor solonoid to basically excite it, the thick wire in the video is permanent live from the battery, hope that helps

    I can't believe that the nut for the positive connection for the starter was so rusted. It kind of makes me want to go out and remove mine just so I can give it a light coating of copper grease. I've recently changed the brake pads on my 2012 1 series and I would highly recommend that you replace all.of the hardware, including wear sensor cables, as they are prone to perishing. And a good file for the caliper bracket will be need as the pads ride directly on the bracket so the rust that builds up prevents smooth movement of the pads.

    This video is a good example of why smacking the starter firmly with a broom handle can allow you to start the car. Doesn't fix your problem (obv), but can get you home without a tow. The other thing I'd mention is an oil leak like you mention was the oil filter housing gasket on my E53 X5 - it's a lump of metal bolted to the block with a ~75mm square rubber gasket between the two. A lot of work for a gasket (and worth watching a vid. of another car if you can't find one for the 1 series), but fixed the oil leak on my spawn's 160K+ mile X5. Cheers!

  • @andylaws4247
    @andylaws42473 жыл бұрын

    Good job! Did you sort out your oil leak? More common than the rear main seal, is oil leaking from the oil filter/cooler housing at the top, then it all drips down. Replace the big gasket that goes between the block and the oil filter/cooler housing and 4 o-rings. Would love to see a video on this!

    I wonder if the starter that was in there (you did compare part numbers after all) already was replaced at one point by the wrong (non start-stop) one. Because the key difference between the two is that the start-stop one cranks a lot faster - as to more quickly start up the engine while just pressing the clutch. I first thought the battery was weak, as it was cranking over so slowly, but you mentioned you replaced it recently.

    Hey mate, your leak most likely comes from the o-rings sitting inside the oil/coolant heat exchanger which sits alongside the oil filter housing. These o-rings become hard and stop the sealing, they are 25 euro from BMW. I had the same leak, you have the 4 o-rings and possibly a new gasket for the oil cooler which connects to the engine block.
