The “Blue Crew” - San Diego Garbage Strike of 2021/2022

Day 23: Sunday, January 9th 2022
Thanks a bunch to the very friendly driver from Alabama for allowing me to film! The flew him in on December 9th when Orange went on strike and moved him down here when San Diego went on strike. I purposefully kept this video “raw” to show what it’s like on route at the moment. Each stop took about 10-20 minutes. And that’s all I’m going to say… there’s a lot more that should be said but this channel isn’t the place for that. Enjoy!
THIS VIDEO IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY

Huge respect for this driver. Whatever anyone thinks of him, he’s came from out of state to do what he can to help out in this absolutely horrible situation. Hope they reach an agreement on this soon but at this point every party in this has dug their own grave in my opinion. No need to get into that junk. Just nice to finally see a video of the strike mitigation measures they are trying to get working. Excellent work

It should be 2 workers, it is too much work for a single person, now I understand why there is a strike, even if they pay 1 well, they will soon end up with a damaged back, hopefully the corresponding authorities will form teams of 2

Awesome video! I’ve always found the whole “blue crew” and “green team” concept really cool, and after talking to a few local guys who have gone around the country helping out, I think it’s cool to finally see a video, even though it’s just commercial collection. Cool to see an out of state driver using equipment probably foreign to him, getting the job done, and helping with the backlog. Strike or not, Corporate greed or not, the trash has to get picked up for health reasons, and let anybody call it whatever they’d like, but the man is making a living for his family, while on a vacation at the same time, lol. Great job!

For being from out of state, especially the south, he did pretty well. I would give anything to be a fly on the wall in the morning meetings with the blue crew drivers. You can imagine many of them are used to completely different equipment, including but not limited to Macks, heavier Atlantic and Half/Pack front loaders with joystick controls (as opposed to the California rabbit ears), and being able to do 12-14 tons in a load legally. Not to mention most front load stops in Georgia are relatively easy stabs, whereas 3 yarders on castors in enclosures are the norm here. Hopefully he appreciates his diesel truck when he gets home. Residential on the other hand is probably smooth sailing, it benefits Republic to run ZRs across the country in a situation like this. There’s a lot more that can be said, but I’ll leave it at saying that I really appreciate that you chose to film front load and would not mind seeing more

I can't imagine the culture/equipment shock some of the drivers from the south got when they came to California. I'm certain a lot of the drivers appreciate their trucks back home for all the reasons you brought up and more! Glad you enjoyed!!

guess the benefit of a large company is that they have a handful of strikebreakers they can bring in from any parts of the country surprised the trucks were even allowed to leave the yard, drivers usually blockade the entrances and exits to prevent strikebreakers from coming and going
