The music used at the beginning and end of the story is an extract from 'Duet for Two Violins' by Luigi Boccherini, Op 5 N2 Larghetto.
About the author: Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish doctor and author, celebrated for his world-famous creation Sherlock Holmes, the consulting detective who set the standard for crime fiction into the 20th century and beyond. In addition to his Holmes stories, Conan Doyle is also remembered for his fantasy and science fiction novels and stories, including 'The Parasite' and 'The Lost World' series of novels, his historical fiction, and for numerous short stories contributed to magazines over a 40 year period. He was knighted by King Edward VII in the 1902 Coronation Honours.
'The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle' was first published in the January 1892 edition of The Strand Magazine. It was the fifth short story to feature the character of Sherlock Holmes and was subsequently re-published in book form when the first 12 stories were collected together as 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' later that year. It has been frequently adapted for radio and television; it is one of only six surviving episodes of the 1960s BBC television series starring Peter Cushing as Holmes, and it also featured in the first series of the 1980s Granada TV series starring Jeremy Brett.
A note on the text: for those reading along with the book, please be aware that there may be some minor differences between the text of the story as originally printed in The Strand (1892) and the later book publications. For clarity, the text read here is the original 1892 Strand Magazine version.

@@BitesizedAudiosorry to hear about your occasional insomnia, Simon. I think we've all pretty much experienced spates of sleep failure here and there. It's no day at the beach to be sure. The question is.. do you, yourself, listening to you, yourself, put you, yourself to sleep as well as you put US to sleep?😉 Because it is you and Watson and Holmes who carry me into Dreamland most nights, also! 🥱

12 hour shifts! Goodness! I haven't been in hospital often, most times just to give birth, but I know that nurses are the true heroes of the piece . And collectively, you certainly deserve more sleep then you likely are able to get. You have my gratitude and you very much are acknowledged and appreciated! The truth is that no one could bear a hospital stay without you guys, so please take care and sleep well. Simon absolutely is such a force for calming down those frayed nerves! It also becomes clear what a talented wonder, and certainly prolific writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was. Be well💙

@samkennedy5554 I am indeed! I grew up in Cheshire, and so many nearby stately homes - Adlington Hall, Dunham Massey, Tatton Park, Gawsworth Hall, and so many others were regular filming locations not only for Sherlock Holmes but other Granada series of the time (Brideshead for example). I still have family in Cheshire so visit often. I'll certainly let you know if I'm working in that neck of the woods in the future... I've toured plays to Liverpool and Manchester in the past, but not recently. I'll keep you posted!

It's got a great mix of inductive reasoning, clue following, person tracking-down, interesting side characters, and a happy ending for all parties. At the moment I need to listen to something on youtube in order to fall asleep, especially after I wake up in the middle if the night to go to the bathroom. It's very difficult to get back to sleep after that because my thoughts start racing and I get anxious. I usually get bored very quickly with the videos I play in the background, so it's difficult having to constantly find new material to fall asleep to. However, this has been my go to video for the past month and I don't mind playing it almost every night. The voice is pleasant, the story is not overly interesting, nor scary. Still, I never get past the 10 minute mark because I fall asleep. I stil don't know what happens in this story, I haven't listened to it while awake.😅

If I'm not mistaken the word is pronounced sodder, despite being spelled with an 'l' in it. Just letting you know.

Ah, I believe that may be an Americanism. It's generally pronounced "sohl-der" in standard English, though there may be some regional accent variations: the "sodder" pronunciation is given as an alternative in the dictionary and it sounds like that's the standard pronunciation in the US.

@@BitesizedAudio Well, okay. I'll go along with that. I fully admit that I don't know everything.
