When I was a kid I spent hours searching for an answer as to what was behind those plants and I even tried for hours over probably a year on and off to glitch myself through the wall and I even tried to use every item on the trees to try get through the door; think of the Eric Andre "LET ME IN!!!" meme that was me. I was convinced that Game Freak designed that house in such a way it was possible to access the stairs through an intentional glitch and that they'd be a Easter egg or a mythical Pokemon or something behind those trees and I'd be the only kid in the world to find it. Keep in mind this was the mid 2000s and games were full of Easter Eggs, cheat codes, and secrets for Gamers™ to uncover so you can't blame me for thinking it was a secret the player was meant to discover somehow. Honestly now I know that there was something behind those trees despite not thinking about this for over 15 years I still feel a sense of cathartic relief honestly. Thanks for making this video, I never knew all these years later I needed.

Same here my friend. Can't believe how old we've become. I had Ruby version. It was my very first game I ever had, on an original GBA. I too spent many hours trying to find a way through. My grandfather bought it for me that day then took me out to eat. He's dead now, it's been 14 years, but I still think about it often. One of my best memories I have with him.

That's really sweet ❤️ I remember seeing pokemon Emerald advertised in a magazine and I never had seen rayquaza before it was an insane moment seeing a brand new legendary for the first time (we didn't have Internet back then so I got all my news from magazines) I remember begging my mum to buy me pokemon Emerald the day it came out even though we was really poor I didn't really understand at the time but she got it for me in secret despite not really been able to afford it but I found it by mistake. It was one of the best days ever, I ended up playing it day and night and using all my pocket money to buy batteries for my gba so I could keep playing. I still remember each and every section of that game and where I was and what I was doing to this day. This is why I love video games they hold so many memories and everyone has their own little stories to tell for each and everyone

when I was young I bought an action replay at a flea market that had poorly drawn fakemon on the casing. But it promised "GAME BREAKING ADVANTAGES-INFINITE POSSIBILITIES-CHEATS+CODES FOR 100+ DS titles." So with my birthday money I opted for it instead of a new game and went straight to work on my Pokémon diamond. And I kid you not after messing with the wall through walls I ended up finding Shaymin after what seemed like endless minutes walking through flower pallets. I had a whole like Pokémon diamond and pearl guide too that didn't have shaymin in it so I thought I struck gold. Haha.

You didn't need to translate the Japanese text. The English version has that script implemented too and you could have checked it using the rom on Advance map (0x2279B7 is the address). It goes like this: - If you win, he will say: "That was superlative! Why, it was like seeing myself in my youth again!"; - If you draw, he will say: "So, it became a standoff. It was a brilliant match in which neither side conceded a step!"; - If you lose, he will say: "Ah, too bad for you! But it was a good match. I hope you can win next time." Hope this helps, even 4 years later.

In case you were curious, the hiker text just identifies the hiker as a mountain man with no name attached (that's just what the class is called in Japanese, the Lass class is actually called Miniskirt in Japanese so that's pretty normal). Everything else is just standard battle fare. Also if you want a more stylized version of what the old guy said, "Well done! Watching that reminded me of when I was young! I was also a Pokemon trainer back in the day."

This video is equal parts fascinating and infuriating as the creator makes all these weird decisions lol. Like insisting on using the German version (but searching in English for gameshark codes and, predictably, finding English version codes), the weirdly long efforts at the beginning to reach the house, and then as you mention downplaying the old man's dialogue. Though, I *am* really impressed that the machine translator actually came up with a workable translation of the old man's dialogue, since he's talking in some weird old man type dialect in Japanese

nah, the trees were also there in the japanese version when the e-reader still was a thing. My guess is, that the e-reader would've activated an event that removed the trees, probably after talking to the old man with the card active. Localization removing the trees wouldn't make sense either, since they probably just edit text without checking the maps. Plus, even if they checked the maps, a blocked off staircase wouldn't be something they'd bother with.

People complained that the gen 3 map was too much water, but dive made it fun. There was so many places to dive, and it made you feel like you might find a secret. What if there is a patch of seaweed with a rare pokemon? What rare items might be down in this hole? We know now all of the locations and pokemon, but as a kid in 2003, it was very exciting to explore when it was all still mysterious to you.

The old man blocked the door because on the second floor, he hid a memory of himself from long ago. See, he used to be a Mountain Hiker when he was younger, but due to a tragic incident, he was involved in an accident that had him stuck under rocks for months. When he was finally rescued, he gave up being a Pokemon trainer and a mountain man. But that room remained, because in it he hid the dear memories of his younger self. That's why he says "You did it" and "It was like looking at my younger self again" after you defeat the man on the second floor.

That Hiker Npc was actually the old man's ditto who never forgave him for growing old and giving up the journey. So the ditto kept thinking about the old times so much that he transformed into the image permanently. It only changed into a rock when it needed to p00p. It held it in for so long it became rock. The old man just didn't want to deal with it. As usual the player the hero saves the day

imagine your a real life NPC, locked in a room blocked by three trees at the exit. To live out eternity waiting for the player but never shows. There is a hell for NPCs and that is never being discovered and forgotten. Being of absolute isolation. Only to be freed many centures of gameplay later. This type of discovery would pave the way for the NPC with a life long journey of a fixated life fulfilled.

Removing the plant sprites wasn’t necessary as long as you changed their collision boxes (you’d simply walk through them and into the staircase). I wonder, had you left the sprites alone, would they still be gone after completing the battle & exiting? I’m sure they would in order to make room for the old man. Still interesting though.

Is this actually fully functional in the Japanese version if you had an e-reader with one of these cards or was it already scrapped by release? If it was functional I'd be curious how the actual event plays out normally; how/when do the trees move, does the old man have dialogue before you enter the basement, does the trainer have dialogue, does its sprite change?
