According to The Band's Robbie Robertson, he wrote this song while he was staying at Levon Helm's parents house in Arkansas. Robbie has stated in numerous interviews and books over the decades that Levon's father, Nell Helm was a very proud Southerner who told him many stories about his life growing up on a cotton farm as well as stories about the lives of his ancestors. Nell Helm proudly said to Robbie one day, "You know what Robbie? The South *will* rise again someday." Robbie then took all of Nell's stories, emotions and feelings of Southern pride and wrote this song. This was Robbie's tribute to the South and all the many proud Southern men and women who thought & felt exactly like Nell Helm did.

I'm a huge fan of classic rock, for me Chris Robinson is one of the few singers who still sings with a ton of soul. This one's beautiful! Also if you've seen the footage of Jimmy Page with the Crowes, he does the old Zep stuff better than any active singer today! Levon Helm still rules, but if the Band isn't around, the Crowes deserve this shot! especially when its that good.

This was a fantastic cover. I played this and the clip from "The Last Waltz" back and forth. The two versions certainly are incredible in their own way and there was definitely much more emotion with the Band's version, but I feel the Crowes did a great job in adding their own stamp on it without losing anything felt from The Band's version.

I pray that in cleaning up history they don't sweep everything under the carpet. Song's like this are historical about a time in our collective history. If we whitewash away history we have a chance of repeating it again and again. Don't let banning this song be the Second time that they Drove Old Dixie Down. Great version of The Band's classic song. Robbie was interested in history. Especially, when it came to Civil War-era history. He & Levon wrote this song based on historical fact. That's why it's so sad & beautiful simultaneously. Outside of Joan Baez covering it, I consider it one of the top 100 songs ever made, period.

I was recently in Petersburg Virginia near Fort LEE and ran into a gigantic old old cemetary Blandford Cemetary where 30,000 confederate soldiers were buried after the siege of petersburg...its a shrine to the lost cause of the confederacy...this is where memorial day was created (look it up) It is amazing...and atop one giant monument theres a statue of robert e lee and inscibed below him it says GLORIA VICTUS which means glory to the vanquished... my family have lived in the appalacian mountains since before the revolutionary war...only one person in this area had slaves his name was Patrick Hagan and they were indentured servants and after their debt was paid they were freed and most of themsettled all around Hagan Hall and thru hunters valley where they continued to work for Mr. Hagan and owned their homes...does anybody understand how HARD it was to survive herebback then? White or black

Jesus, people. I like "Ride of the Valkyries," but that doesn't make me a Nazi. I enjoy Prokofiev and Shostakovich, but that doesn't make me a Stalinist. Can we just appreciate the music for what it is?

I think the Confederacy was the worst idea ever (including New Coke) but I appreciate the masterful storytelling of this song. It's about a man who's seeing his entire world go up in flames. Everything's gone and all he can do is sift his fingers through the ashes.

Well I’ll tell you one thing Chris Robinson has me convinced that he is proud of his southern heritage watching him sing this song Either that or he is a great actor. You can just feel how real and raw the emotion is along with those words He’s from Marietta Georgia and went to college in South Carolina

The song rings true to shed light on the horror of war. The north and Lincoln didn’t care about slavery he cared about saving the union saying “My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that. What I do about slavery and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save thise Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. The union was made up of slave states just as the south was Maryland, Missouri, Delaware, and Kentucky remained slave states and Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 freed enslaved people in areas in rebellion against the United States. He had reinvented his "war to save the Union" as “war to end slavery." The emancipation was meant to unusual he south and hurt them economically just like sanctions are used today. This was about northern expansion with industrialisation and the South rejected the factories and the move into cities. Mark my words today in 2022 another industrial revolution has begun. Gas prices skyrocket and war breaks out in Ukraine this after its 31 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Bigger player are behind everything we see. The green new deal, the United Nations agenda 30, then covid and inflation of the US dollar and the collapse of the Russian ruble it’s currently at .007 cent to 1 US dollar that’s .70 cents to 100 US dollar. Keystone pipeline shut down and sanctions stop Russian pipeline to Germany. The green new deal is being put in place right in-front of us and it’s hidden in tragedy. COVID got bills passed that provided billion for electric charging stations. It’s sad that honesty can’t change the world or those in power feel this is the only way. Nevertheless our world is changing and will never be the same. A world government is coming and currency will change all crypto currency is already monitored and monetized. And Microsoft has a international patent for body activity cryptocurrency transfer software. Patent number W/O 2020 060606 ironic is it that money transfer patent for future currency would be awarded the mark of the beast as its patent number. Crazy shit

This is just incrediable. The emotion and soul that is poured into this. I'm sorry, but only a southerner can really nail this song. A Canadian may have written it, but an Arkansan put the soul in it. Baez sings a nice easy to listen to song, but crap people she didn't even get the words right. She just liked the tune and had no idea of the emotion and the feelings evoked by the tune. I for one had a great uncle who "was just 18, proud and brave, but a yankee laid him in his grave."
