At the end of the day, war is war and these things happen in pretty much every war. And tbh this title should have been "The Biscari Massacre, A story about two US soldiers who went rogue" because it wasn't really executed by the goverment of the US.

    If they really wanted to surrender they would have done it before even fighting and killing a bunch of innocent greens. Another interesting fact is that Patton thought making his soldiers "killers" who wouldn't take prisoners would make the enemy fight less. It's actually the opposite, as enemies are going to fight much harder if they think they are going to be tortured or killed upon surrendering.

  • @Teufer2

    @Teufer2

    It really depends on the situation. The enemy is more likely to flee if they believe the enemy will "give no quarter" in a battle. But if they have no way to flee, like if they are surrounded or the know they will be executed for desertion if they do so. They will fight to the bitter end. Not an historian. But probably one of the reasons why the Waffen SS were such dangerous enemies is because they knew they were hated by the allies. Far more likely just to be shot if they tried to surrender. So they often fought to the bitter end.

    In the end, it all comes down to a matter of personal character. My father knew a man who was a corporal in the Canadian Army. He was bringing three German prisoners to a POW station when a lieutenant drove up in a jeep, told him to shoot the prisoners and get back to the front. The corporal refused. The lieutenant told him to shoot them or he would have the corporal court-martialed for disobeying orders. The corporal held his rifle out and told the officer, "If you want them dead, you kill them." The officer drove away, the corporal finished escorting the prisoners, and returned to his unit. He was never even spoken to about it. In the heat of combat, mistakes happen. I do not presume to condemn men who are frightened for their lives when they do things to insure their own survival even when the light of hindsight shows it was probably not a good choice. Under that kind of strain, people don't always think clearly and even if they are, they can't see the future. But this was not done in combat. This was a deliberate murder of unarmed men. This is the difference between war and murder. The sin of war will be visited on the heads of those who start war, the sin of murder on the hands of those who commit murder. Soldiers are not responsible for the deaths they cause in combat but they are for any deaths they cause out of it. And that holds true for all armies and all nations; no exceptions.

    Another thing conveniently left out was that the Japanese never signed the agreement to take prisoners. The ones they did take they were cruel to. Not really a fair situation where we have to be kind to them but they don’t to us. Pinko college professors who hate America will always leave that out. They always gotta make America look like the worst when it’s not even remotely close. The Germans also literally ran over to us and surrendered as opposed to the Soviets because we gave them 3 meals a day. The Japanese butchered millions upon millions of Chinese.

    It's a classic sniper tactic. The Idea is to intentionally wound and not kill the first guy. Then as people gather to help you pick them off. This is why in the us military youre trained to secure the area before helping wounded.

    The allies had concentration camps in Germany as well. They were called "Rheinwiesenlager". In these labor camps the surrendering German soldiers were either starved to death, shot or died of exhaustion. 1.9 Million soldiers were imprisoned in those camps. The Wikipedia article says it was only a few thousand deaths in total, while in reality it was more than 200,000. I was able to talk to a local, who survived. He said they were tortured. Furthermore they was an incident were a soldiers wife was coming to the camp to bring food to her husband - She was then raped and murdered. In general there have been lots of rapes after the defeat of Germany. Most of them were done by the red army, but also by the US and French army. Though, my grandma said that the US soldiers, especially the black ones have been nice. When they drove by, they gave chocolate to the kids.

Unsurprisingly some of these Felons ended up committing War Crimes, rarely they were punished for that. Now before someone goes "But": Yes Towards the End of the War, we Germans also enlisted Criminals, who just like the American Ones, also ended up committing War Crimes. Unlike the American Criminal Groups, the Axis ones were either executed at the end of WW2 or at least charged and punished. My point being: Not only inexperienced People without or almost without training were forced to serve in WW2 by each side, but also actual Criminals who then ended up committing Warcrimes.

    My father went from Normandy to Hamburg with 53rd (Welsh) Division. He spoke eloquently about the harrowing effects of war on young men who were not warlike. He spoke also of the difficulties of peace in the aftermath of war. He said things I have never heard or read elsewhere. One thong he came back to was the dilemma of surrender and capture. He said it would be very hard to resist the urge to shoot a surrendered man who moments earlier had killed your friends and had been trying to kill you. It seemed a reasonable point. I didn't push for details, although I suspect he did resist. He also spoke of fear of capture, citing the same reason. "We knew we might.... We worried that they might, too". I have never worn uniform, bit I imagine this anxiety is not uncommon.

    I never knew my grandfather, but he served in all of the major theaters in Europe under Patton. According to my father, he said that during the Battle of the Bulge, when his unit found evidence of the Germans marching barefooted POWs into the snow to execute them, they only took soldiers prisoner; officers were executed on sight.

    My great grandpa was in Sgt West's squad. He didn't talk about the massacre until right before his death. He was captured by the Italians right after the massacre and given to the germans who sent him to stalag 19. He said he never forgot how he had been taught how evil the Germans were when in fact he said that they treated the American POWs with nothing but respect. He lived with the guilt of the massacre his whole life and never really got over it.

    Thanks for sharing your story. I'm Italian and my grandfather fought in WW2, after the capitulation in 1943 he was captured by the germans. He wasn't as lucky as your great grandfather though. He was sent to Buchenwald, a concentration camp. He managed to escape, but he suffered severe PTSD: he was spooked by barking dogs, couldn't hear germans speaking... He kept serving his country after the war too (he was a Carabiniere in Sicily and fought against the Mafia and bandits) he died of Gangrene before I could've known him, as he refused any cure.

    I like how the general that told them to commit war crimes in his speech didn’t have anything happen. I know you don’t have to follow unlawful orders but if they are followed the one that ordered it should be found just as guilty.
