Give this man his credit where credit is due... No one, in 82 years has done what he did and he didn't just break a record, he shattered it to a million pieces.

I don't know man. Stonehouse IS impressive and the punt average record fell hard But "another era" of football? Punt and play single wing quarterback plus defensive back as everyone went both ways? And probably for $500/wk during the 10 or 11 game season with all the off season jobs selling insurance or cars you can handle. No punt camps for Baugh I imagine.

But also punted from what looks like 5 yards closer with no rush and likely if he caught a hold of it would get a good bounce because returners were still new to the spiral I'd imagine.

True, also there is the grass and turf of today vs. the grass of 1940. Back then kickers were allowed "natural tees" up to 3" made from whatever dirt was around the kickoff spot. Can we even make a pile of 3" of dirt amongst all the soil of today's professional football fields? Field conditions are obviously much more uniform and likely better these days. Footwear is different and specialized for each position. Cleats also likely don't have to dig into the ground as much since there just isn't as much dirt and more the ground is more uniform. I also wonder what the ball specifications were back then versus today. I would imagine even with kicker balls being what they are, there's a big difference. I also wonder what we know about punting today versus what was back in the day... I am impressed with Stonehouse's abilities and what he did... just not sure how to compare 1940 and today.

@@IsaacPunts You know the technique light years ahead of me . This might be one of those discussions like comparing Ruth and all those guy back in the day in baseball when MLB was all white. Compared to today with Latins and Blacks playing against you. Different eras but some pretty good punting either way I suspect.

  • @IsaacPunts

@@bwayne40004 It's immensely hard to compare, and the truth is Sammy was so far ahead of any of his competitors at the time he deserves his own context, but for a rookie to stand out like this when everyone has equal access to coaching and punting knowledge is, in my opinion, equally impressive. I guess it's kind of like the Kareem-Labron debates.
