You really explain things well! I love playing f4, it catches so many people offguard. If played right, the Bird can be dangerous. Thanks so much for the video, and I'll definitely be checking out your other videos!!

A great example of how to play the Bird. I also watched your other video on the Bird opening and I believe the Bird is much better than its reputation. I intend to start playing the Bird after watching these two videos. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Thanks! Ya I also think that it's underrated, I mean the Dutch Defense has a strong reputation against d4, and the Bird's Opening is the same idea but a move ahead. I personally find that it fits with a variety of chess styles as well. Thanks for the support I appreciate it!

Hello. I used to play the Bird's opening as a schoolboy, back in the 1970s. Among my collection of chess books is a 1950s book on the opening. Not so much an opening book as a collection of 180+ games with commentary and a general section on the ideas behind the opening and ideal piece development. Also a section on Henry Bird himself. Born 1830 in Portsmouth England. A rapid player with a reluctance to accept draws, he took part in many international master tournaments but never won any and was not a full time chess player, being an accountant by profession. In 1867 he played a match against then world champion Steinitz, losing only narrowly +6, -7, =6. Touring the US in 1867 he played an average of 25 games a day against local club players, 1,500+ games in two months! He died in 1908. I was interested in your 1 f4 d5, 2 c4 gambit. This only appears once in the book I have...and black declines the gambit! Thanks for all the content.

Hello Solomon. The book is "1 P-KB4 (A Guide to Bird's Opening) by R E Robinson. Published by Daily Post Printers, Liverpool. As I say, it's quite old. I may have the only copy! Games from the 1870s to 1940s. Reading that you're 7 feet tall reminded me of a club match I played many years ago. My friend on the board next to me was playing a chap called Michael Henbury- you'll never have heard of him but at 2ft 11inches he was Britain's shortest man. You might have seen him, though you'd never know. He played an Ewok in Star Wars - Return of the Jedi. Michael was so short he had to stand on his chair to make moves on the far side of the board....hopefully an interesting anecdote!

I didn't take this opening seriously. Part of the reason it's a powerful opening is because nobody plays it. I've now played a hundred Bird games and I'm still looking to play a hundred more!

Thanks, Solomon. The Bird is an old friend. Your clarity in explaining the theory through an actual game by Bird himself is very helpful, as I am planning to begin playing it again. Cheers.

Good video, Chess Giant. Would you say the Bird gives an advantage to white? I'm a 1580 player and I only win ~50% of the time with it. Despite having white pieces.

Thanks! Ya I would say that White has an advantage, but that's it's extremely small. It's a good opening, but it's very easy to lose the advantage. What openings do you play as black? If you play the Sicilian, I recommend the English Opening. It's like a Sicilian Defense but with one move ahead. I'll drop the link below, but it's easy to play. If you don't play the Sicilian, maybe try the London System. It's super easy to learn but gives white a clear advantage. Let me know what you think! Both of these would be good for a player of your level. If you want more recommendations let me know! @@TheChessGiant Thank you for replying. Yes I play Sicilian against 1.e4 and Dutch against 1.d4. I would like to add that in my opinion, the Leningrad Bird is a madman's opening choice, unless one is an expert. King is dreadfully exposed.

Yep. After having played it for a long time now I can attest to this. Especially if black launches his "h" pawn to create further weaknesses on white's kingside.
