Still the largest privately owned house in America, operated as a resort by the descendants of builder and original owner George Vanderbilt, grandson of Cornelius "The Commodore" Vanderbilt. The original 125,000 acre estate is now down to 8000. Much of it went into the Pisgah Forest.
