    The VQ35 and VQ37 are amazing engines as long as you are religious with respect to oil changes. Don't change the oil enough in a 350 / 370Z or a G35, G37, or Q60 and it WILL bite you in the butt big time. I have seen them trashed in as little as 35K miles. In that case, the owner let the oil go over 10K between changes. The engine was so full of sludge that it ended up cheaper to replace the engine.

    Yessir i can attest to that, and i feel the same way i have the VQ35DE in my 04 Pathfinder LE Platinum ed. and the truck just seems to keep getting faster and faster!, not many people line up against it man i slain bmw 325/330's like clock work, i just laugh when people pull up and underestimate my Pathfinder but yeah hr doesnt know what he's talking about because they had different hp ratings the base model VQ35 had 235hp for like Maximas and the Xterra and base Pathfinder, the LE/Platinum ed carried the higher performance engine rated @260hp 280tq that Nissan put in the Infinity/the Pathfinder's brother the QX50 which is an ugly truck, the Pathfinder with its smooth lines is an much better looking truck and i love mines.

Other then those 2 issues it's been solid. That is on my stock motor. I'm at 10k with my built block and refreshed heads. No problems besides knock harness.

    The VQ35DE engine started in the 2002 Max, the early Vq35 engines were notorious for oil burning due to the piston rings wearing prematurely ... 2001 was the last year for the VQ30DE , which was on the Wards 10 best engines since it's inception in 1995 which Nissan used as a platform for the VQ35. Strong engines nonetheless

    The VQ is in the Xterra as well. "Detuned" is a bit unfair. What they did for the Xterra is they stroked the VQ35 to displace 4L (hence VQ40), which lessens horsepower, but increases torque, and broadens the power band, which is what you want for a truck/off road rig. Not detuned, just differently tuned. 15 years old and still the torque leader in small truck gas engines. Cheers man!

    This video is very miss leading. Any NA engine isn't going to get much from air filters, exhausts and remaps. But this VQ35 block can run around 400-450bhp with a turbo kit without needing to build any of the engine...

    J Dog yeah I check my oil often because I do almost no highway driving but mine burns no oil whatsoever. I do take it out on the highway for 15-30min every couple of weeks just to try and avoid too much carbon buildup but the vast majority of the miles I put on it are stop and go, 45mph driving. I live in a suburban area and my commute to work is about 5-10 minutes. My mpg's aren't so great either because of that. Most of the time I average 14mpg just because I'm almost never on the highway.

Every one of them USED some oil but didn't BURN oil. Best thing is just change it on time, never skimp. VQ' s ROCK, just treat it like you want to keep it forever & don't let lots of small repairs pile up.

    Few rubber gasket surfaces--lower pan, timing cover rtv channels, valve clearance adjustment requires lifters replacement and timing chain removal, coolant flowpath issue, (pathfinder mod needed), timing chain tensioner issues, dual mass flywheel excess inertia... none of these issues discussed in your video.

  • @TheGuruStud

    @TheGuruStud

    5 жыл бұрын

    You don't adjust clearances (done with buckets, not lifters). It never needs to be done. Timing chain does not need to be touched unless a guide goes bad (not that common). Coolant mod DOES NOT need to be done unless going for boost. Tensioner is not a big deal. Dual mass is junk, but is used, b/c people are sissies and keeps noise down (like every car). You're gonna have to come up with better excuses. Use quality 40 weight oil and actually check it, it'll last forever. Idiots don't do this and blow em up or cry about severe oil consumption later.

    You can split hairs & say ANY engine has problems with SOMETHING! The VQ35 (what I've got) is a STRONG engine. #1 priority; change oil regularly; DONT EVER LET IT RUN HOT! If your temp starts going up, STOP IMMEDIATELY! Better to tow it in & change water pump than to have to rebuild or replace the engine. Do those 2 things along with normal check-ups & your car will run, run, run, & FAST! Also, I know you young boys like your add-ons & expensive mods, but anytime you modify a VQ (or any other engine really, trust me I've done it too) you will likely have problems that may damage your car over time, especially anything to do with catalytic converters, exhaust, or trying to get more HP than the cars designed for. Remember these cars came from factory already tuned & matched to what the engineers knew would be best for long-term use. Change any of the settings by adding on hi-perf components & while it might add lots of extra power, it could also create problems.

    But would you ever spend the time and $ to swap a VQ into lets say an S chassis that see's track time? I think a VQ35HR sounds like a cool NA swap for my S14 but feel like the juice wouldn't be worth the squeeze and do a lighter weight Honda K24 or F22 swap for my track build.

    BTW, I think the 2006 G35sc was the 1st year model that actually "stomped" on BMW's & Mercedes, (check out Road & Track magazines test from 2006). Until then BMW's dominated rallies, (I think, check it out as I said). Either way, the VQ's beat the living crap out of the straight 6 BMW engines, & cost WAAAY less to maintain (or modify). Trust me, I've had my fill of BMW's!

And +65hp is just the beginning of this trend... as batt prices come down it wont be a thing to make that +120hp. Looking forward to the Black S with KERS. Best of all worlds really ... amazing VQ sound, V6 providing power on the top end and all the torque you'll ever need at low rpms from the electric.

I bought a g37 after that and its a fun car but it lags at lower RPM's especially when you put the throttle down from coasting at moderate speeds but if you are in the powerband and put your foot down the thing can be scary fast.

I've done a lot of looking around to learn as much as I can about this engine for maintenance purposes and the most commonly reported oil leak seems to be one that springs up just below the axle. Apparently it's almost always just a worn cooler seal which is not only a cheap part in itself, but due to its position it also shouldn't cost much in labour if you took it to a mechanic.
