    The industry doesn't try to find and develop talent anymore, you have to already build a following on your own before they mess with you or they'll just plant an artist into the promotion machine based on a popular look, sound or style. Looks and popularity is a must, talent is optional.

    I definitely agree on this take I feel like back then artist had to really put in the work for them to be signed and reach to the masses but due to TikTok anybody can blow up and there’s no proper development with the artist labels will sign anyone who has a viral song and not give them development to grow and they drop them off when they feel like they’ve already got enough what they needed from them.

You only get that kind of thing with major label artists. Alternative, independent and local artists are just that, real artists and anyone who hears their music is guaranteed authentic music. People who just let the radio and the billboard charts spoonfeed them their music are the only ones who have to worry and wonder about industry plants. Music is like food. Don’t eat macdonalds every day and then complain about the quality of the food. Go find real stuff and you’ll not only enjoy it more but you’ll know that it comes from a real place

    What upsets me about industry plants is that I follow a lot of “underground” rappers who are some of my favorite artists and have way more talent than Ice Spice. But because they don’t have the same connections they are overlooked. Razegod and Sadzilla are excellent examples of this. But it is legit almost criminal that Derek Pope still hasn’t blown up. I keep waiting each year for his music to go viral because it’s exactly the type of music that does go viral except better. And yet it never does, which blows my mind.

    Lil nas x is as far as you can be from an industry plant. Dude was promoting his songs in twitter comments for like 8 months and it barely got 300 views on each. He grinded like that for a while with the same formula as OTR. Song with games being played in the back(sonic,mario, etc). He even released an EP from what i remember, Rio de janieiro or something. And the MV in the cemetery. Then Old town road was released and it blew up like 2 months after. He got the record deal after it. Industry plants get an record deal before releasing any music. Lil nas x isnt an industry plant and its funny when i see people mention that just because his record label promotes him a lot right now.

    I do agree that it would be great to see independent artists win and get big, we all know deep down inside it won't happen 99% of the time. And instantly writing off the only people that are popular enough to keep hip hop popular, may ultimately kill the industry faster than a "plant" that millions listen to and enjoy per song. This video was great, but I kinda know the optimistic side of me is naive for thinking that writing off anyone with industry support will help the industry in the near future.

  • @TheScarekrow420

    @TheScarekrow420

    One of his main points in the video is that millions of people AREN’T listening to them though that’s half the reason music is so boring and bland and why executives are “depressed” because somebody becomes successful and every other label snatches up other artists and shape them into clones of the successful artists and they flop and/or people see what they did and they aren’t interested shit like this is also why rappers are struggling to sell concert tickets with the exception of older artists

    I think part of the problem with industry plants right now is that a whole swath of genuine, promising rappers got killed, locked up, or cancelled in the past maybe 10 years. Off the top of my head there was Mac Miller, Xxxtentacion, Lil Peep, Juice Wrld, Pop Smoke and too many other Chicago drill rappers to name, YNW Melly, NBA Youngboy (he’s free but afraid of violating probation), Bobby Shmurda (got locked up in his prime), and Pooh Shiesty. 6ix9ine and DaBaby were cancelled. Once 6ix9ine was cancelled, Trippie Redd had to dial it back. DaBaby still makes hits but the industry doesn’t promote him. All these dead and incarcerated rappers leave a void that gets filled with industry plants. A similar environment existed in the late 90s after 2Pac and Biggie got killed. It didn’t end until maybe 2003. A similar thing happened in rock music when a bunch of grunge artists died or got too addicted to make music. This cycle will hopefully restart in 2025. But theres a real possibility that instead, AI will enable labels to make the ultimate industry plants and nobody will ever get real traction again.

  • @joebrat6809

    Record labels signing copycats isn't exactly a phenomenon restricted to the 90s - this Lil Pump thing was done before. Young Thug is basically a clone of Lil Wayne in every single aspect except he can;t really rap, he's just autotune singing. But he has the same flow, same style, everything. Just a lot worse...

    When are y'all gonna start making videos about the fans are also the problem because they don't consume actual substance but STAAAYYYS complaining about it.. stop listening to Ice Spice and Bobbi and listen to actual podcasters and actual rappers if y'all feel so deeply about it. The industry only does what they see will sell, so then why invest in a Noname or Rhapsody because YALL DONT SUPPORT THEM but ice spice gets maadd views. The fans don't want to make the necessary sacrifices to make shit better

    The problem I’ve faced is that it seems like everyone’s an industry plant. Kanye wouldn’t be Kanye if he wasn’t connected to Jay-z, making Kanye an industry plant. Tyler the creator wouldn’t be big if he hadn’t known frank ocean who like worked for jay-z and Kanye too… so it’s just industry plants making industry plants making industry plants while a huge sector of the marketing campaigns of these artists is to distance yourself from the industry plant name… and honestly I’m kinda bored of it cause its firstly disingenuous but it’s also like these artists then go about saying things like “just go out there, be yourself, dare to be different, anyone can do it”… and it’s like so many of them are setting people up to fail cause they will never have the social connections these big names have. And what’s fucked up is that the entire follow your dreams and be yourself bs is just part of these artists marketing campaign, it’s fucking marketing its Bullshit. They know selling themselves as self made and that you can do it makes you want to buy their shit even more

    I understand now. "Industry plants" are show business, and hip hop rejects show business. One more example of getting it ass backwards and embracing the thing that hurts the growth and progress of the art. Rap is so stupid.
