Wow took me back to my childhood. I remember watching people try to kickstart their Maico almost breaking their ankle because of compression. I had the YZ 80 first year Yamaha did the mono shock and went to liquid cooling. Would love to have that bike still. Damn makes me want to buy a dirt bike!! Thx enjoyed the video!

Bonjour Steve, In France, modern Harley Davidson are awfully expensive, so I understand the figures you mention but they remain crazy for most all of us. I would have liked to see you getting one instead of this Honda even if it reminds you your youth. Furthermore, it is even not a Diesel 😁 Amicalement, Raphaël

I was working for a Honda dealer as a wrench when the CR bikes came out and I dreaded having to test ride one after I tuned on it. I usually wound up on the rear tire most of the ride due to radical torque curve on those old 2 strokes. Sure was fun once I got used to it.

I am looking for a 1934 that I can make a dirt bike out of. I just bought a 1983 Ironhead that I found in a barn. I hope to come out and hang out and weld sometime. I will probably end up building one from scratch. I'll have to show you. Maybe I will build one for you. We should definitely get in touch. I have been casting my own cases and cylinders so I am getting more confidence.

@@WelderUpVegas Thanks Steve, I definitely will. I am building a bunch of tooling for my vintage lathe. I am casting a steady rest and some other tool post gadgets like a radial drill and a grinder. I found a 1940's Drill press and sensitive tapping station from an old machine shop that had been closed for many years . I am going to take a video of it while it is still in its original state before I clean it up and do the wiring. I'll send you the link. I have a Ranger XLT that I am making my welding rig . I have a flatbed on it , my Miller Bobcat 225, a drill press and a Swordfish vise. It is a badass truck but I still need to do the spring over axle conversion so I can lift it a bit. Then I am going to swap that little six banger out for a Kubota diesel engine. I have so many projects. They got backed up when I was run over on my 1957 Panhead by a Ford F350. I had to learn how to walk again over the Plandemic and I nearly lost my right leg from blood clots that went to my heart and lungs but I am coming out the other side and no ne would even be able to tell about my leg unless I told them. I definitely want to come out some time. Talk to you soon.-John

Just clicked on the video, from the years you mentioned I’m guessing you’re looking for a VL? Great bikes for sure, love the I-beam springers on those bikes along with the shape of the tanks. Using one of those front ends on my knucklehead. Dig the CR, you bought too, still have the 90 model I got when I was 16. If yours has been sitting for any length of time don’t rip on it too much without replacing the crankshaft seals. Used to work for the local Honda shop and had to rebuild plenty of two strokes because of bad seals. The crank seals dry out, get brittle and the crankcase vacuum at high rpm sucks in the lip of the seal. When it happens it creates a vacuum leak and causes a lean situation which as we all know plays hell on a two stroke. Good luck with the 87, great lookin bike. Just remembered, the 87 CR’s used magnesium in the alloy for the engine cases, pretty sure 88 did too. I was told it was for weight savings which is a very good possibility. Never have found a shop around here that’ll weld on those cases. Anyway, part of the reason those bikes have gotten so scarce is that the mini sprint circle track and shifter kart racers buy them up. Still a few companies around that make aftermarket cylinders for them along with complete CR 500 cases and parts available. Welderup probably already knows all this but if not I figured it’d be good for the guys watching that have one in that era or are looking. Just hoped to save somebody a nightmare with a Honda from that era. 👍

Thomas, I hope I am answering your question as I understand it. Tack and grind is the beginning process in learning how to weld. It is very important. Your son will go on to learn many different kinds of welding. If he does not make a career out of welding, it is a good thing to know if you need to fall back on it. It has been my lifetime career and now my boys are making it their career with a mobile welding truck and are self employed. He should learn every aspect of welding. I hope I have answered you in some way that helps. I wouldn't be where I am today if not for welding. Some career centers offer beginning welding or it's possible there is a trade school close to you. If he has a master welder that is willing to tutor him, that always helps as well.
