If you want a solid camper, look at getting a horse trailer with living area. You can use the horse area and retrofit it, or put your quads, kayaks, etc there. The horse trailers are built to take a lot more abuse and have metal roofs, solid under decking, etc.

there's a reason airstreams are so damned expensive . they're pretty well built and sturdy. i bought a used one in 2005 traveling as a rig welder. after my divorce i just lived in it for ten years and banked everything i made. it's cheap living and spartan living. good if your single and have no desire to cohabitate . sold it a couple months ago for almost half of what i paid for it and could have gotten more but i knew the guy and now he's living in it. one lesson it taught me was as a society we accumulate an ocean of crap that we don't need. simpler is better.

It has developed problems such as cracks in the kitchen sink and bathtub that leak a lot and cause mold. Paper-thin plastic is the issue here. Very poor caulking around the sink. My wife and I have a 1986 Holiday Rambler travel trailer that we love. We are the second owners - my wife's aunt and uncle bought it new and sold it to us in 2000 when they got too old to safely use it. This trailer was built solid. Over the 37 years it has been on the road, it has never leaked nor been resealed. Owner of a RV dealership/repair shop that we use told me to never reseal the roof unless it starts leaking. He said that they do not build them like this any more and should never leak. Yes, we have had to replace a toilet, fridge and some plumbing but, at that age stuff is going to break. We have looked at new RVs but none are built like ours. Cheap materials and poor workmanship is all we see in new trailers. Guess we'll stick Ol' Betsy and enjoy not putting out a lot of money on something that will probably be junk in five years.

My 2016 F150 i bought with 60,000 miles, at 87,000, the camshafts went out, cost $4900, now at 120,000, the intake manifold cracked, Ford DOESNT MAKE them, backordered. They came from CHINA! So, now i have to put an aftermarket manifold on, plus a tuner and a tune, costing me over $1200. I swear, I think i will see if i can find an old 1979Ford that has been rebuilt, and a 40 ft trailer from the 70's and move on a small piece of property and take my OLD boat and go FISHING. I'm an RV salesman, and I can tell you a lot of what Scotty is saying is true. The issue is that these are homes on wheels going down roads at 50-70 mph. Things are going to break and come loose. Imagine your house put on a trailer and driven down the road. Things are going to break on that. For people who enjoy the rv lifestyle, it is what it is. Also, Catalina is a low-end model travel trailer. 30k is not a lot for a travel trailer. On the other hand, Cougar is a much higher-end travel trailer for much more money, and these things can still happen.

I bought a trailer in 2018. The first page of the manual it states that is for 'occasional' use. Living in it full time voids the warranty. Also, if you do live in it full time it's difficult to find insurance coverage. Trying to get any warranty work done was almost impossible. Most dealers wouldn't do any work unless you had purchased the trailer from them. I watched lots of KZread videos and learned to do repairs myself.

During the 6 months we lived in it the power inverter kept tripping off, the a/c quit cooling, the heater fan started squealing, the black water drain valve broke so we couldn't drain the crapper and had to rent a porta potty, and the shower pan started leaking. First transmission oil change recommended at 100 thousand miles . This motorhome looks great runs like a semi truck . Air suspension It's a dream to drive . National went out of business in the last bank crash.. That is sad because they made quality motorhomes . Good thing is all the running gear parts are readily available . A couple sets of tires, A/C repair once and sealed the roof and resealed the front window. I put maybe $800 in repairs into it in 10 years. I almost bought a MOTORHOME. First I talked to people who own them. I was told it cost almost as much to keep up as a regular home. The vibrations of driving down the road does awful things to the plumbing, wiring, and the mechanical systems. One thing after another seem to need to be repaired and or replaced. The tires alone run about $20,000 to replace. The generators go out at the very worst possible times. I realized to stay at a 4-5 star Hotel is much cheaper than buying a MOTORHOME. By far! And workmanship in the US us absolutely horrendous. One thing is the quality of parts and the engineering. But another thing is final assembly. Then we took it on a shakedown run to a campground about 70 miles away. The slide leaked, the brakes stuck and over heated and the clothes rack in the bathroom came loose. We took it back to the RV dealer and told them to keep it until it was all fixed properly. They fixed everything and we got it back in March of last year. Took it on an 1800 mile tour last summer with no problems whatsoever. Suggestions: Be patient and don't blame the dealer for what the factory did. Our current trailer is a much better one then our first (cost double what our 1st cost). I researched a lot and bought what I believe at the time was one of the best built trailers on the market and bought from a highly regarded dealer out of state. That said it still had a few issues. If your gonna buy a trailer, know they aren’t built great and be prepared to repair the shoddy work done by the factory or the dealers. If your handy you’ll be fine, if not I would advise you to not buy one. Finding good repair service or warranty work done is a joke. Another little thing that’s good to know most dealers will not help you if you didn’t buy it from them, just my experience. Thankfully I’m fairly handy .

For some people that like to stay in a Campground or RV park for weeks or months on end in their retirement, a Travel Trailer is a good option for them. If I was someone that didn't know exactly where I would end up and didn't mind "dry docking" for a couple of nights, a decent Trailer might be an option. I would however never buy a brand new one. In certain areas of the country, you can find many of them up for sale after one or both of the retirees health starts to fail and they are not able to go traveling as much. I also see some come up for sale at bankruptcy and other types of Auctions. On the other hand, in today's times with Airbnb's and other short term rentals in all kinds of areas, you can get one for 2-6 weeks at a time once or twice a year for less than what it would cost to buy one and insure it. This is not even taking into the need for a vehicle big enough to tow it and the gas to power the engine.

  • @leecowell8165

if you're gonna do a reasonable amount of towing a gasser doesn't cut it. you'll wear those engines out a heart beat they just are NOT designed for heavy/continious loading. For that you need diesel power. remember peak torque on a gasser is a very short duration RPM "spike" totally different from a diesel which has a much flatter "curve". it also occurs at a much lower RPM. for example my diesel red lines at 3600 RPM.

You don't buy a travel trailer and not expect to have to do maintenance. It's a part of the experience, it helps to be handy. When you buy an RV, you should be checking it over well and making a list of items to fix before taking it from the dealer. Anything else not cosmetic, you usually have one year from the manufacturer to have things taken care of under warranty. I've bought two new trailers from different manufacturers. Other than minor issues that were fixed quickly at a reputable dealer, they have been rock solid and really not too much effort to maintain.

We live full-time in a prepandemic 2017 travel trailer in a 55+ RV park. I think our build quality is better. Still some things to fix. During summers we tow cross country staying in RV parks. They are all filled with people that are living full-time in an RV. Young and old. We stopped in an RV park in Boise and the owner said they only have two spaces open for travelers. The rest of the park is full timers. My granddaughter bought an RV intending to live in it in Boise but all the RV parks were full. She and her husband couldn't afford an apartment with both working full time. They moved to Denver and are struggling. It's a different World from when we grew up in the 1960s.

My wife and I love our RV. We trade them in every 6 years or so. Right now we have a Jayco White Hawk 26FK. It's awesome. Lots of room. Tons of storage space. All the comforts of home just with the ability to move if you want too. We are in Texas right now. We will be headed for Idaho and Montana for summer. We will be stopping for our annual Vegas stop. This year we will be visiting the grand Canyon, and Yellow Stone. My wife and I work remotely during the week and travel on Saturday/Sunday when we are .giving north or south. We love it.

As someone who’s not sure where’d I’d like to set down roots, and buy a house - I still feel like buying a decently made RV (if one can be found) is a better option than renting a house or apartment. Once I go to buy a house, sure I’ll have an RV that’s depreciated, but it’s still mine and I’ll always have a home. It’s hard to find a place in the US where the communities are thinking long term for the environment and for their people.

Me and my Wife decided to stop living in an apartment few months ago and leading up to this i was quite skeptical. I was on my way to buy a 60k fifth wheel, new truck that was prolly another 40k and find a pad for it. Thankfully my grandpa stopped me and told me the truth of what they have been through with their new rigs, and i was flabbergasted. Basically even anything after 2015 is crap. Some models might still be okay... So instead I kept my 1500 and bought a 2008 29 foot jayco and so far, been 3 months... have not had any issues. Now of course the previous owner i knew and he took very good care of it, i mean resealed the roof last year just bc it was getting old, and even did his own maintenance too keep it running smooth, and now that i have it, i keep doing the same.... now it definitly wasnt perfect, I do need to do some caulking, and the outside elements over the years have worn the caulking on the outside, but i can tell it was till made better than this trailer in this video... Been loving the life too, got me and my wife a private pad on a small homestead... and it is actually alot cheaper. Now like last month i did spent a little more than normal for maintenance, but its jsut like a house, needs some love time to time, better than a major surgery anyway

5:05 good advice Scotty. That's what I said to my brother. If you buy one, you won't have to time to enjoy it. You also need to store it indoors because they don't hold up to the elements. Rent it for a week and give it back. Let it be someone else's dream and hassle. Lol It's just not practical.

I handled ins claims or RVs. Theres actually a listing in the middle of the owners manuals that you need to have the seams and seals checked every 3 to 6 months as they can dry and crack allowing water intrusion. I cannot tell you how many people have stopped and asked to buy it. This was my first and probably only camper. Someone taught me years ago to never buy an RV with slide outs or any kind of pop out and aluminum siding only, no fiberglass. Replacing the factory installed window unit is as easy as a trip to Walmart but it freezes me out and works great. I ❤️ 💕 💗 my RV 🐾🐶.

Rented a 32' RV in Las Vegas. Only had a few hundred miles on it. After about 3 hours of driving the wall lighting started to loosen and fall off. Small screws into thin paneling rather that studs or structure. Convinced me to scan detail if I ever bought one. Can't remember the manufacturer. However, since then, in my experience with friends' trailers and RVs, I've found the same issues. Bought a Nucamp Tab 400 Boondock Lite and found nothing but high quality. Bottom line, that is often repeated, you get what you pay for.

We rented one and decided to get one and it was after the pandemic inflation. For family vacations, it's worth every penny. We bought it in October 2022 from a private seller and used it a week at a time on 3 different trips before the end of the year. It's also a guest room for my parents when they visit and they can have their own little place because I park it in my long driveway and still can fit 4 cars. If you plan on using it at least 5 times a year and can store it at your house, it's definitely worth it seeing that 1 week renting one is already an amount of 1 year of payments. If you can do handy work around the house, these shouldn't be an issue to own.

A $30k trailer is cheap by comparison these days. You can tell that’s the low end model from the outside. I rented what was a brand new trailer for a week. Was about a $30k trailer. Things broke off in your hand and everything was plastic or particle board. Was generally uncomfortable to “live in.” On the contrary, my in-laws bought a used trailer that sells new for almost $60k. Much better build with fiberglass sides and better build materials. They have had a couple issues, but overall it’s better quality and comfortable.

I have seen various issues that scotty mentions here on various occasions when camping alongside families who have gotten trailers in the last 4 years. However, I must make a case for ours. Were going on our 11th camping season with our 2015 coachmen freedom express maple leaf (liberty for us customers) edition, and yes some things like the interior finishings are delicate, and some of the taps dont flow like they used to, overall, most costs have been just regular maintenance (winterizing, tires, brakes, etc.) and weve been golden. Trailers are a lot more expensive now than they were in 2014, but if you can go higher end Freedom express, cougar, or rockwood, you should be set.

As for the tires, most Goodyear tires are made in, yes, China. Only as of late has Goodyear started to produce some of them in the USA. Most of the problems with tire blowouts on travel trailers is caused by installing under rated tires, overloading the trailer, driving too fast but mostly underinflated tires. So, if you make sure that the weight capacity of the tires are high enough for your trailer AND the cargo, stay within the speed limit marked on the tire and keep them inflated to the Maximum Cold Air Pressure, you should be good.

My grandpa used to work at the Goodyear factory before they shut it down. Bless his heart, he worked there night shifts just to support his family farming 1 man operation that was losing money back in the day. The only tire I've ever owned (in 40 years of driving) that developed a bulging blister while driving was a Goodyear Assurance Comfortred somewhere around the year 2004...I drove my Chevy Malibu the remaining 35 miles to home (it was a very bumpy ride) and the tire bulge on the driving surface went from golfball size to softball size and then went flat overnight. Somehow I was able to drive it like that to the tire shop a few miles away after airing it up again.

One morning I walked into the camper while sitting idle in our driveway and the kitchen sink faucet just broke at the base and fell over while I was looking at it! Check valve leak in black tank flush, radio not working properly, refrigerator stop working, leak on gutter midway, tapped the brakes a little and the back window blind valance was found came out of the wall onto the floor, microwave stopped working after only about four short trips and last but not least a terrible smell started to become noticed at end of last a trip and it was the commode leaking internally filling up between the two walls of bowl with sewage.
