A lot of Americans are extremely insular stemming from a combination of factors. Lack of exposure to other cultures in the curriculum, the country being situated by itself pretty much in North America, and there being little reason for the average person to ever leave the country, and a history of American exceptionalism minimizing the importance of other peoples. tl;dr: they dum lol
