The BIGGEST Lose-Lose Game in NFL HISTORY | 49ers @ Falcons (1995)

Спорт

In week 17 of the 1995 NFL season, the Atlanta Falcons had a dilemma on their hands. If the Falcons lost to the San Francisco 49ers, then they would miss the postseason. If the Falcons won, then because of the condition in their trade to acquire quarterback Jeff George, then the Falcons would be forced to give up their first round pick to the Indianapolis Colts. This is the story behind the biggest lose-lose game in NFL history
NOTE: Due to copyright, portions of this video had to be removed. One part (around the 3:00 mark) explained how Bobby Hebert was a fairly solid quarterback for Atlanta, which made the trade somewhat odd. One part (around the 5:00 mark) mentioned that the 49ers had dominated the series history against the Falcons, and had one of the best offenses and defenses in football that season. One part (around the 7:30 mark) talks about how the Falcons lost to the Packers in the wild card round

I discovered your channel a few days ago and have been binging videos instead of getting work done. It's very rare that I find someone who knows more random NFL history than I do. Your videos about obscure anecdotes are especially fun. Keep them up!

We are in the same boat. I found his channel around New Year's Day, and I've been going through his videos like crazy. Finally someone on KZread that likes talking about NFL history, and not just the big stories that everyone else already profiles. It's pretty clear that he does a good amount of research too.

As a Cowboys fan, I specifically remember this game for the fact that it gave the Cowboys an opportunity to get home field advantage since they were playing the absolutely terrible Arizona Cardinals the next night on MNF. I wasn't even concerned about how this affected the Colts.

This game had huge consequences for San Francisco as the loss cost them Home Field Advantage after Dallas destroyed the hapless Cardinals on Christmas night on MNF. That meant that the 49ers had to play Green Bay in the Divisional Playoffs instead of Philadelphia. The Packers would pull a shocking upset at Candlestick and prove to be a SF nemesis throughout the rest of the ‘90s. This loss to a clearly inferior Falcons team may well have cost the 49ers a repeat because they had Dallas’ number at that point and a playoff match would have been in SF had the 49ers simply taken care of business against Atlanta.

@@someperson8151 Not only 1 - 4 vs the 49ers, but if I recall correctly, at least two of those losses were absolute blow outs, game over at half time. 1995 would've been the 49ers over the Cowboys if they met in the playoffs.

@@82dorrin That's actually an unfair reputation, his interception percentage was well below league average. He only had one season in his career above league average. His career interception percentage was lower than Troy Aikman, Brett Favre, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, John Elway, and Warren Moon. The only Hall of Fame quarterbacks who played while George was in the NFL who had a lower career Int percentage were Joe Montana and Steve Young. Every other great quarterback of the era threw more interceptions than Jeff George did.

I explained it in the description. Unfortunately this was completely out of my control. Everything was fine when the video got launched. Then the NFL manually copyrighted the video and blocked it from being shown on all platforms for using a 10-second highlight of a 49ers game. Even though it falls under fair use, the NFL nor KZread care about that, so the only way to get the video back up was to remove that part after the fact

Fun fact. The Colts got Marvin Harrison for John Elway. Here is how. They drafted John Elway in 1983. Then, they traded Elway for offensive lineman Chris Hinton. Then, after seven seasons and six pro bowls, they traded Hinton for the draft pick, which they used to take Jeff George in 1990. Then, after the 1993 season, they traded George for the draft pick, which they used to take Marvin Harrison in 1996. So, the Colts ended up getting Marvin Harrison for John Elway.
