Truth! Excellent video. Another cause that ruins Ford lugs is the use of impact wrenches. Did my own brakes and tire rotations and still had the original lugs when I traded my 2013. Why? Because I used a breaker bar and torque wrench, no impact gun.

That is very true. Most people over torque lug nuts with an impact.

@@FlyingWrenches13 If that's what most people do, then maybe lug nuts should be chosen that can deal with that? Or is Ford on a mission to teach most people the appropriate way to change a tire? If that's the case, they have a lot of work ahead of them.

I've owned two Ford Fusions with the same goofy 2-piece lug nuts with the soft aluminum cap. The cap was more for cosmetic reasons. There are just way too many occurrences of this issue. Its not caused by "bad" or "cheap" sockets that are being used, its a bad lug nut design plan and simple. One piece lug nuts are the only solution.

Problem #1 Ford two piece lugs are more easily beat up/deformed than a one piece lug is. Suggest go with Mcgard 64073 Lugs

Those lug nuts will swell over time on wheels that have never been removed. Nuts that have never had a socket put on them for any reason. I believe they swell due to water getting in them and freezing or corrosion under the cover causing them to swell. In my opinion the sockets used to remove them are not the problem!! These nuts will fail regardless of the quality of the tools used!

100% agree. Good video and good info. The term "swollen" is a bit misleading but that is how all of the shops seem to refer to them. They aren't really swollen so much as they are deformed from being beaten on by impact wrenches (yes, with bad or worn sockets, or just impact guns set WAY too high on psi) and they have simply separated from the core. Once that separation starts - it goes down hill quickly. I got stung by them and fortunately I was in my own garage where I could deal with it and not stranded on the side of the road with a flat tire that I couldn't remove.

Yeah I agree with you! Swollen probably isn’t the right term but most people refer to it as that.

You are spot on. Same shit today got new tires now I have 4 lug nuts that got deformed. They were fine before service. I actually fixed them at home by pounding a good 19mm snap on fully on each deformed but then pounded around the rim of the socket. Pulled off and repeated until the socket goes on and off properly. Yup you can bend the aluminum back to proper shape!

I disagree. I just experienced this issue, and the caps were definitely swollen from 19mm to 19.5mm that is definitely "swelling". I've never heard of this problem with the size of the lug reducing. So the swelling term is apt. Edit..I live in the northeast and I'm fairly certain that water gets in them and freezes, and this contributes to the swelling.

I had thought about hammering on a socket, but it felt weird I was looking at like pry/chiseling it off anyway, hammering on a socket worked way faster/better I just picked a cheap chinese socket to sacrifice to the Gods as it were anyway, just wanted to say thanks that really did the trick

Agreed. All those lug nuts swell and corrode over time, ALL. Rotating tires or not. I know from experience. Solid one piece is the way to go. Make sure the one piece is solid as well because they sell ones that say "solid" but it still has a cap over it.

I recently started a side business fixing cars for people and I'm currently working on this exact issue. I had originally thought the studs were stripped nut nope every lug is swollen. Literally every single one. I been chipping these caps off one by one. The heat causes the chrome cap to swell up .

Here in the rust belt, we get rust and corrosion between the inner nut and the cap. This swells up the cap and sockets don’t fit. Another flaw with the two piece design 😕

I never have an issue until I go to a tire shop. Every time they mess up some of my lug nuts. I do my rotations and brake jobs even use an impact with a deep, thin-walled Snap-On. I tighten with a 55 ftlb torque stick then follow with a torque wrench at 80 ft lbs.The irony is tire shops tell me my nuts are swollen. Yet a brand-new SnapOn 21 fits them fine. P.S. this is. 2013 Infinit G37 with the same 2-piece lug nuts. Now I just lend the shop my socket each time…. and the lug nuts survive service.

My F150 has this issue and this is my solution. I found that a 7/8 SAE socket fits them a little loose but it works nonetheless. So I simply went to China Freight and got me a cheap 1/2 breaker bar and put my deep well 7/8 socket and breaker bar in my toolbox and I dont worry about it anymore.I solved my problem for about 20 bucks.Oh yeah, one more thing.I also put my old worn out hammer in with the socket & breaker bar.Havent had to use them yet & hope I never do but Im ready if that time comes.

When using the half size sockets to remove the swollen lug nuts, use a breaker bar to remove and not an impact wrench. The impact wrench backs off and does not get a good impact simular to using extentions. Otherwise the impact wrench takes longer to remove and the lug nut gets jamed and hard to remove from the half size socket.

I think the lug nuts on the F-150s at least are actually 13/16” on the outside dimension which is really only 20.65mm. The little extra room there with a 21mm socket might be causing those to tear up as well.

They probably keep putting these on because they know these lug nuts are going too go bad , then you have too come in and be soaked for some new ones. It reminds me of this so called lubed for life stuff. So now, no more grease fittings on most cars and lite trucks. Those lug nuts should be solid in the first place.

It means the Dealership tech over tightened the lug nuts causing them to crush, hence the swollen appearance. The techs easily over-tighten your lug nuts by putting anti-seize on the stud threads and then tightening down with a air or impact wrench. Anti-seize and impact tools should never be used on lug nuts or their post threads. The anti-seize causes your torque rating to increase dramatically, causing damage to lugs, post, rotor, wheel hub, and more. kzread.info/dash/bejne/imeixseRmb27lbA.html
