The Biggest Chinese Restaurant in the World ⎜THE WHY Documentary

The 5000-seater West Lake Restaurant, in the city of Changsha in China, is the
biggest Chinese restaurant in the world. It has a staff of 1000 and serves no fewer than 150 ducks per day and 200 snakes per week.
Old traditions and new money come together in a vibrant and colorful exploration of modern China. Between mouth-watering and ‘exotic’ Chinese food and the motivational mottos
chanted by the staff, the series examines how China has been transformed over
the last few decades. It also poses the question: In this new affluent and
ambitious China, who is thriving and who is left behind?
Directed by Lawrence Elman & Weijun Chen

You may have seen the full version of this documentary, and are wondering why some parts of the film are missing. Don’t worry, we can explain:
WHY STORIES is comprised of pre-existing documentary films which we buy and edit into 45 minute films to broadcast on TV. In this way, WHY STORIES extends the lifespan of high-quality films while simultaneously expanding their viewership by reaching out to new audiences. Where funding permits, THE WHY also makes local dubbed language versions of the films, removing a prevalent barrier for many people to access independent information; particularly for those who are unable to read, write or speak additional languages besides their mother tongue.
This film is part of the WHY STORIES-series. To find out more about the other films in our series head to thewhy.dk

It seems most Chinese people work hard. It also seems many Chinese people are very honest. However there are also Chinese people who are not honest and will do bad immoral things to make money either out of desperation and/or greed, even when that screws over other people in China and/or abroad. Like for example there is SO much counterfeit stuff made inside of China, everything from fake dinosaur fossils to literal fake eggs to entire fake copycat companies. Making cheaper knockoffs of something more people can afford is usually logically and morally understandable but making dangerous or shoddy knock offs and/or lying to the customers that a knock off is the real thing is wrong. Another example is all the "tofu dregs construction". There is pretty much no moral excuse for any contractor or construction wormer engaging in that sort of behaviour whatsoever. Also rich people who cut corners regarding public safety. Like I remember there was one greedy CEO of a milk company in China who watered down the milk he sold in a way that caused some milk to be dangerous to drink and resulted in a young girl's death, so he was (deservedly in my opinion) sentenced and put to death by the law courts in China.

This BBC documentary is very old, about 15-20 years old. China looks very different today. It changes so fast that you can't recognize many places after only a few year. Many years ago, when I visited China, I stayed in Changsha (Hunan) for a few weeks. I mistakenly thought BBC was famous and I asked many local Changsha residents about the world's largest restaurant in their city named "West Lake restaurant" although I didn't know its Chinese name . Nobody in the city seemed to know what it was or its location. I looked all over Changsha's map and went around the city, but I couldn't find it.

I guess because they'd have to buy like several hundred dishwashers. Also because using several hundred dishwashers hundreds if not thousands of times a month would probably cost them like thosuanda of renminbi (chinese dollars) a month extra in operating costs. Also because washing stuff by hand is probably fastet then using most dishwashers. Also with dishwashers you still usually need to rinse off the dishes beforehand and wipe them off afterwards.

As a Chinese, I have to say our food is going with philosophy from ancient time till now. Traditional Chinese medicine believe the food and the medicine are homologous. That is, different thing has its own specific function. That's why you can find many things even some poison from the doctor's prescription. But it has been existing for thousands years, I also believe it is useful. By the way, this video must be old. You can not find an employee with only pay RMB1000 per month. My hometown locates in countryside also, and the villagers can get RMB 4000 one month if they work in the town for the same jobs. Anyway, hope you can visit our country by yourself. You can have your own idea then instead of heard from others . Welcome to China!

The Chief cooking competition was very very disturbing! Very little consideration for environment and animals! I personally can't give my THUMBS UP for this kind of behavior and endorsement of this establishment. It only so sad!!!!

The truth of the matter is people have been doing this for years in China.Growing up in China in the old old days before coming to America in the 1950's we got used to it.

The truth of the matter is animals are slaughtered in some form or other before reaching for human consumption. The only difference in the 'civilized' world is that people are doing it behind close door. Macdonald minced the entire dead cow including all the internal organs before coming out as 'delicious' piece of burger meat.Is this also cruelty to animal ?
