I remember going to the Essendon v Geelong game in 2011 thinking we were gonna get thumped by 100+ considering how dominant Geelong were, that game was the biggest shock performance I've ever seen

Port knocking off THAT 2007 Geelong team at Kardina Park when Geelong was on a 16 game winning streak was absolutely stunning and far more memorable than Brisbane beating West Coast. Maybe even more impressive given how embarrassingly one sided the GF a few weeks later ended up being.

@@midooley543 As you saw in the video, following that game the Cats won 29 in a row in Geelong. They were on a 16 game win streak prior to the game. It was 2 top 4 sides but there has almost never been a team so much better than the competition. They're in the same bracket of dominance of Essendon in 2000 (who's only loss made the video).

The biggest upset I have been too was when Adelaide beat Melbourne by a point in 2021, Melbourne had gone unbeaten until round 10 until the Crows beat them!

Absolutely... Collingwood was dubbed the Dirty Pies over in the west and after the game the Melbourne paper revealed that not a single football writer, commentator or expert had tipped them.. it was something like 70 tipped Eagle and 0 tipped Collingwood... this had never happened before. Definitely the biggest upset of 2020.

A bit of Freo bias here but the 2013 QF vs Geelong deserves a mention. Not only did Geelong finish higher on the ladder, but the final was also played in Geelong for the first time.

As a bulldogs fan the west coast elimination final was the biggest upset of the four games. If any supporter said we had a chance that night they were lying.

I actually did that game as well as the prelim, saying that they were both huge upsets in their own way. Although I had to cut out the Sydney Gold Coast game because it got a copywritten

In 2003, Geelong was 3-10 and 14th. They beat Port Adelaide who were 10-3 and 1st. That was a far bigger upset.

@afltube No stress. I was 17 at the time (38 now), so I have a better memory of it. I'm guessing you're younger and have little/no memory of 2003. I only remember how bizarre the win was because we went 7-14-1 and finished 12th. It was the fewest wins and lowest finish for like 60years. It was a seriously bad season by cats' historical standards.

i remember going to that 2009 north v saints game and telling my friend "saints are gunna be pissed they broke their winning streak the week earlier, they're going to destroy us today" and yet we somehow beat them by 5 points....

The miracle on grass is a deserved winner of 2013. But, another (hilarious) upset from 2013 was Carlton beating Richmond in an elimination final after Carlton finished 9th on the ladder. They had replaced Essendon who had finished 8th after they were banned from the final series.

by fucking god that Hawks game in 2019 still gives me nightmares, what should’ve been a top 2 finish and a deep finals run ended up in a semi final exit for what was probably our strongest list in that era

I know you started from 2000 but im sure the biggest upset for 1999 would be Carlton over Essendon in the preliminary final.

Still just in terms of the upset itself, Hawthorn beating them at the Adelaide Oval was a bigger upset. But I see what you mean tho that was probably a more shocking result at least in the first quarter

@afltube maybe so but North only had 1 win before that day and adelaide had won all 6 games so far, North ended up finishing 15th that year. I know hawthorn were 17th when they beat adelaide but they ended up finishing 12th

That’s what made this video so hard to make, it felt like there were about 3-4 really good contenders for each season 😭😭

Definitely was a very good comeback and a great effort by Freo, but they were the favourites to win the game, so was a very good comeback and a great game, but wasn’t an upset.

Might be bias but the 2017 North vs Crows was way bigger. Runners up vs 17th and 17th won by 9 goals.

2006 should have been WCE v Geelong, 56 point turnaround in a final quarter by WCE.

Carlton was in good form and pushing towards the 8 at that point. So Collingwood losing to Hawthorn the week after was definitely a bigger upset, although even that wasn’t the biggest.

2019 should of been round 1 of lions vs west coast west coast coming off a premiership and lions coming from a another bottom 4 performance

Oooh mate I'd have to disagree with some of these here - 2016, an Essendon team stripped of 30 senior players, touted to not win a game the whole year, knocking off what would be a mid table Melbourne in round 2 - 2017, North thunderpumping Adelaide by 10 goals in round 7 or a mid table St Kilda kicking the shit out of the eventual premiers Richmond by 67 - 2018, Gold Coast beating Sydney, statistically the biggest upset in history - 2019, The Doggies casually kicking 19 goals in a row against an Essendon side that was above them on the ladder at the time, 104 point victory - 2021, the 2020 wooden spooners of Adelaide knocking off the 2020 grand finalists of Geelong

Hahaha interesting. 2016, yeah fair enough I considered that one too. 2017, I know that was a great performance by north and the fact they won by that much was incredible but I still think just in terms of the upset itself Hawthorn’s win at the Adelaide Oval was more of a surprise. For 2018 I actually was gonna do the Gold Coast Sydney game although it had to get cut out because the video of it was copywritten. 2019, yes that was a huge surprise although it was a relatively 50/50 game so it wasn’t a huge upset, but more just a surprise they won by that much. For 2021, yes that was a big upset, although you could say the same about the Melbourne Collingwood game as it was the eventual premiers against a team who finished 17th. Cheers for the comment though, I find it interesting discussing this topic as obviously there’s no right and wrong 😂😂

While I agree with the 2020 choice Goldcoast I would say that the “Dirty magpies” win in Perth against the eagles was a bigger upset. The pies were in horrible form and no one gave them a chance, everything was against them including the government who tagged them as “dirty” because of covid. The accommodation was terrible etc etc.

I'd have had Adelaide beating Melbourne in 2021 for the recency to their spoon and that Melbourne were undefeated so far in a premiership season. Collingwood may have finished lower but we're more in a low season than being outright terrible and had their win after Melbourne had their streak broken. Otherwise great watch

Essendon beat Sydney in RD16 2022 was surely the upset of the season? Sydney a far better side than their 8th position showed, as evidenced by finishing 3rd and making the grand final. Essendon on the other hand were hopeless, but somehow got up and handily beat them, and this is AFTER getting pumped by 61 points by them earlier in the year

That was a decent upset, although nowhere near as big of an upset as North Melbourne v Richmond. Richmond were a top 8 side and north had not won for 16 weeks, and their only previous win for the year was an unconvincing home win against a heavily depleted West Coast side.

I don't think you could call either side in a grand final an unerdog anf upset of the year. In my opinion so the 2008 must have bigger upsets. Each to their own i suppose.

@@GreekPanos19 gonna not be biased as i can here lmao. the reason people say this is due to the freekicks of the dogs. this was not just a gf thing, as the dogs were no1 for frees for and had the least frees against. these stats followed similarly into the finals series, as the dogs played all 4 games in the final series, finishing with the most frees for and the fourth least frees against, which 3 of these teams did not make it past eiether 1st or 2nd elim finals. However these seemingly low frees against was the worst against the swans, as by the 3 quarter time the free kick count was 16-4 dogs way and finished 20-8, the biggest in any free margin during the three field ump change. videos have been made on the frees missed for both sides and obv u cant expect perfection from the umps but the total count shouldve been an even 25-25. two other things to note, the swans had high pressure throughout the game, having 101 tackles which one was rewarded with incorrect disposal free (hawthron in their final similarly had 104 in which none were rewaded), and 2 the afl came out after the game stating the game was umpired "below standards"

@@afltube It's a very famous game, since Adelaide were on top of the ladder, Richmond were 11th. Richmond won by playing a very experimental position game, similar to how The Western Bulldogs experimented against Essendon in 2000.

Essendon finished in a similar position as Sydney, so I chose the Geelong Sydney game because Geelong hadn’t lost in Geelong for so long.

@@afltube There were so many more greater upsets over the years. one classic one missed for example 2011; Essendon Geelong 2011 The Cats hadn’t yet lost a game in what would ultimately become a premiership-winning season. The Bombers, on the other hand, had lost their last five games on the trot by an average of 34 points. Essendon were also missing key players for that game

So in a year in which Essendon and Sydney ultimately finished in a similar position you can see why I would’ve chosen the Geelong Sydney game given it’s significance in that way

Yeah I completely forgot how that 2011 sydney game played out and really while the Essendon game was an upset I think the Sydney one was a bigger upset. Unlike the Essendon game where Geelong had their former coach in the box for the opponent and the hype leading up to it I could envisage it happening somewhat.@@afltube
