Actually in his early years after debut he had to get over his “dancer habits” and adapt to choreography rules as an idol. That troubled him a lot and even gave him a mental breakdown. So he started the Hope On The Street series to keep practicing his skills as a dancer and show more his capabilities. It’s been nearly 9 years since he debuted. If you watch his latest performances, he still doesn’t dance like an idol. His dance is so clean and skillful, no pretentious movements, never overdid. Yes he’s more like a dancer than an idol but that’s because he decided to stay true to himself, meanwhile surely, struggled and paid a lot of price. Even nowadays with such huge success, he still hasn’t got enough chance to showcase his real dance skills, but his dedication didn’t fade away. Today j-hope not only identifies himself as a dancer but also a performer, or even a performance director, studying from western artists’ performances, paying attention to lights and clothes, bringing up with ideas about choreography, stage design and camerawork and a lot more… He’s such a great person. He’s not like others.

He is; he's not like any other idol. I was drawn first to his dancing, but his character, dedication to his craft, instropection and intelligence made me a fan. He is an absolute gem and inspires people to do better.

And now he gets to showcase his true skills and his dancing journey in his latest docuseries, "Hope on the Street". He talked about what you mentioned here: fear of losing his street dance identity and skills due to his busy idol life and how he thought he lost his way. It's an incredibly well thought out series despite the fact that he filmed it in 3 weeks. It's telling that he has had the concept behind this documentary for years beforehand. If you haven't watched it, I'd highly recommend it to you. It's available on Prime Video

He was debuted as a main dancer and lead rapper if I don’t make mistake. The reason he got recruited was because of his dancing abilities. He learned to rap from RM and Sugar before he debuted.

잘 봤습니다. 저는 아이돌 중에 이렇게 힙한 댄서 느낌 나면서 기본기 탄탄하고 타고난 신체조건 때문에 깔끔하고 정교한 경우는 제이홉밖에 못봤어요. 댄서도 많이 보고 아이돌 춤도 많이 봤지만 둘의 장점이 잘 어우러져서 정말 멋있는 것 같아요.

J-hope really is the best dancer. This ic coming from a person who studied hip hop and contemporary dance, modern dance, jazz dance, ballet and even tap dance since the age of 4. I have always only known dance. I discovered j-hope as an adult a few years ago and hadn’t thought about dance for a while and he awakened my love for dancing again! There are other kpop idols in the group and throughout Korea but from my experienced eye, he is the best. Him being in charge also adds to his appeal as a dancer. It is SO difficult to know your dance parts plus those of every other person in the choreo plus the big picture of the choreo as a whole and to learn it Before everyone else. That definitely adds to his title of best dancer! I always wondered how my dance teachers memorized so many different choreos and taught them to each different class hour after hour each day, a different choreo for each class. It takes some great knowledge and energy and love for dance to do that. J-hope has those type of skills on top of being a skilled dancer himself.

원래 가수 되려고 했던 사람이 아니라 춤을 추다가 가수를 하던 사람이라 그런지 춤 추는 게 보통 가수들과 다른 거 같음 그리고 첫 영상 보면 최근 영상인데, 아이돌 계속 하면서 춤에 대한 열정이 아직도 남아있다는 게 정말 대단하고, 계속 배우려는 자세가 본받을만한 자세인 것 같음. 아미는 아니지만 너무 멋진 사람이라는 게 느껴짐

I've been a dancer for over 13 yrs and have seen a lot of performers dance live but when my friends took me to BTS's concert at Citi Field a few years ago, when I tell you that I've never seen a performer dance live like J-hope, I mean it. A lot of their songs, medleys he freestyled according to the vibe and it's such an eye candy thing to see and even more when I discovered his Hope On The Street videos. I recently learnt from my research that he's a versatile dancer although hip-hop and pop-lockin are his core genres, he's great at marionette, modern, disco jazz, and etc, etc. This guy is the epitome of a dancer, genius and the best.

I'm not even kidding when I say Jhope is the best main dancer among idols. Most main dancers are good performer but Hobi is just on another level. His rhythm is unmatched. People won't usually notice the way his body moves but all dancers will agree how good he is. I'm a dancer myself and his moves and skills always impresses me. His skills aren't always highlighted or something because of their restrictions in choreography but it is during these kind of videos where he shows his talent that speak why he's the best. He's an excellent dancer. One of the dancers I look up to.

The way jhope picks up on the beats and his body plays with each of them is crazy, freestyle dancing is really hard and the ease with which hoseok slodes into it, plays with it is just so satisfying to watch. Hes crazy skilled, this is also a live he did after saying its been really long since he did freestyle

I'm so happy that Hobi still develops his dance roots in street dance in addition to idol dance skills. The freestyle he does in his Hope on the Street lives/videos are my favorite. The way he was able to immediately freestyle for the My Universe music video was sooooo cool. The use of Hobi's neck (and his shoulders, chest, arms, pretty hands, knees, ankles, and feet) are extraordinary. The lines and angles he creates are beautiful.

J-Hope is incredibly talented in whatever he choose to do! And Im not saying this because he's my bias, he is my bias BECAUSE of his outstanding skills and profesionalism! Jung Hoseok is a next level artist who deserves more praise than what he actually gets.

I think his rapping shows a lot of musicality in playing with rhythms and interjecting little pops of sound... but it's also easy and flowing. His rap and his dance are in sync to me.

춤 잘추는 사람은 많지만 제이홉 같은 느낌으로 이렇게 잘추는 사람은 못봤어요. 그 특유의 그루브감 리듬감 스트릿 느낌, 손끝까지 온몸을 완전히 쓰면서 나오는 섬세함과 표현력, 컨트롤에서 나오는 시원시원하면서도 예리한 각. 이 모든 게 다져진 기본스킬을 바탕으로 하는 건데 그 대단함을 조금이나마 전문적인 시선으로 풀어주셔서 재밌게 봤어요. 다음에도 제이홉 춤 컨텐츠 나오면 분석 부탁드립니다.

Thanks for sharing your breakdown of all of these cool techniques that our J-Hope uses. It'll be fun to look for them whenever I watch his dances.

He is a very solid dancer, I've never seen anyone better than him in Kpop. The f**ked up truth is that he was never showcased by his company and it's such a waste istg, till the date we still hope we get to see much more of him, he deserves way better recognition. No one is on his level.

if he wanted to be showcased more, he could be. for example: headlining Lollapalooza! he's just generally a humble guy who puts a lot of work into helping the whole group shine behind the scenes. we may not always like it, but especially at this point in his career, it's his choice how much he shows certain parts of himself. don't place blame where it doesn't belong. he could be doing HotS every month and he's not, that's obviously his decision.

@@curvytangerine Hope on the Street is not equivalent to being truly showcased by the company/group in their group music videos or performances. I find it interesting that when they work with other artists like Coldplay or Crush they choose to clearly highlight Hobi's dance skills with no fear of him outshining them or anyone else. I think they could've done a lot more over the last decade (especially the last five years) than just give him short parts in dance breaks that only fans who watch their concerts or Korean music awards would see. I'm proud of him and he probably does his best to advocate for himself while not upsetting the others but it's obvious that he has so much potential they are not putting to use.

Just because he was able to do Hobipalooza doesn't make up for the fact that his skills as a dancer, performer, and songwriter were not properly showcased and credited in the last 10 years while in the group. He and the group have risen to amazing heights so I'm happy for them. But as Hobi said there is unspeakable heartbreak that they can't talk about, so we'll never know all the struggles that they have dealt with.

thank you so much for making this video! i'm a big fan of j-hope and truly believe he is one of the most talented and hard-working people i've seen! he's an incredible musician and dancer, and i truly admire him for all his skills. i do not know much about the technical aspects of dance but i'm very interested in it, especially house dance. through your video, i learned many new things! thank you for your time and effort to share this great analysis with us! i really appreciated all of it and i especially want to thank you for adding subtitles!

Thanks for a great analysis! He is such an amazing performer and one i truly enjoy watching on stage. He is so well rounded and when it comes to freestyle he is top tier. His in my feelings dance challenge was flawless and effortless. I don’t know enough korean dancers or idols to compare him to so even if i say that he is the best it’s probably biased 🥰. Seriously though he is so good and i hope he gets to showcase more of his amazing dance skills soon.
