Leone aside, this is one of the best ever spaghetti westerns

It has 4 cuts too. When will I have the time to watch all versions. 😂

I’m really happy with the extended Italian cut. I don’t know if I’ll watch the other ones.

This was such a cracking movie. Obviously went for the extended Italian version and not sure if I need to watch the shorter versions now. Perfect cat and mouse manhunt that had me hooked right to the end. The Morricone soundtrack was good throughout but towards the end was so rousing that I got goosebumps. Was planning on watching something else afterwards but ended up wallowing in all the glorious extras. Luckily I held off on Run Man Run but after discovering that Face to Face comes next in Sollima’s loose trilogy, I really feel the need to rewatch it soon.

I absolutely love the final scene where Cochillo shouts never and then the song kicks in with never. Perfect! We NEED face to face now. Like you I went with the extended Italian cut and I’m happy with that choice.

I've got the Grindhouse edition from a few years ago. It's a great spaghetti western.

Already have the recent Run Man Run release but waiting until this arrives before watching them in order. Did you get 88 Films release of The Seven-Per-Cent Solution? A really good Sherlock Holmes movie with some nice extras.

Absolutely amazing, instantly jumped into 1 of my favourite westerns. Whole way through i was grinning like an idiot, so much fun, Van Cleef is an amazing badass, and that score. Oh my God! The indicator release and packaging is so terrific. Might be one of my favourites of the entire label. Run Man Run i watched after and i really enjoyed it too but for me Big Gundown definitely edges it!

I’m a big Milian fan, so more of him in the sequel hit the right note for me. Can’t wait for the middle part of the trilogy, which someone said Eureka was releasing, to get a release date.

So glad to see you loved this one so much, Graham! I still need to check out Run Man Run, but I will certainly do so. As I said before, this one I think is my favorite non-Leone Italian Western.

@@manvfilm (Warning: There are some minor SPOILERS). I really enjoyed Run, Man, Run. However, I did prefer The Big Gundown. A few things I really felt the loss of were the Ennio Morricone score (though I did enjoy the main theme/song that kept popping up in different ways in Run, Man, Run!), and Lee Van Cleef as the lead (I liked the Cuchillo character much more as a supporting rather than the main character, especially as here I felt he was a bit inconsistent in his abilities and the use of his skill set). Also, I really didn't care for the Salvation Army woman character and much of that part of the plot, including the fight with Cuchillo's fiance. That being said (and it may sound at first like I didn't like the film, but that is far from the case), I enjoyed so much about it. As I said, I dug the theme song and really got a kick out of how it was brought back throughout, including by some of the characters themselves. The setting was great, and I do overall really like the Cuchillo character, especially when he gets into some of the showdowns in the movie. Also, it is fun how he can't help but antagonize so many people no matter what a tight spot it may put him in. I also enjoyed the main search, and the various entities involved in said search, as well as where that leads. And finally, I quite like reluctant heroes (really even antiheroes just doing some good and heroic things), and we got several such instances here. The ending was also really strong. So, as I said, I did really enjoy it. I am interested to see Face to Face, and I will also want to see some other films from Sollima (and more of Tomas Milian, as well, though in looking at his filmography I find I have seen a number of his movies, including some surprising ones from later in his career!)

Great observations. Thomas Milian is such a chameleonic actor that it can take me a little while to realise it’s him! Bring on Face to face. I need to see that.

Should have my set next week. Disappointed that it's still only a 2K scan. I can live with it. But if this comes to 4K by someone in the US within the next 2 yrs, it's gonna drive me nuts.

Hi Graham, love the Big Gundown, probably don’t bother with the shorter cuts as they remove any reference to the girls rape. I did watch both versions on my Grindhouse Releasing set which came with the soundtrack. Slightly odd that the excellent main title to the Big Gundown is titled “Run Man Run” and poor Lee Van Cleef on some posters getting billed as “Mr Ugly comes to town”

Yeah I found the extended cut great. The only way I think I’ll watch the shorter cuts is if I’m listening to the commentary.

Superb film, well worth the wait.

It’s a great film with amazing extras.

Can you please let me know if this indicator release will play on my US 4k player? I really love the packaging. It looks a little better than the Grindhouse release.
