The Big Gang Theory | Danya Perry | TEDxAsheville

Youth gang involvement and anti-social behavior has a devastating impact on our families and communities at-large. However, the enormity of the problem and fear of these "big, bad gangs" should not preclude our efforts to find a solution. The solution - well, it's as simple as looking into the mirror. Danya Perry currently serves in the capacity of Vice President of Youth Development for Communities In Schools of NC and has served as a youth / education advocate for the past 20 years. In this capacity, Perry has spearheaded statewide initiatives aimed at school violence prevention, focusing specifically on bullying and gang prevention / intervention. Perry has assisted many organizations in their mission to ensure academic proficiency, provide a conducive learning environment, and mobilize the community around youth. Perry has co-authored several books - “Preventing Violence & Crime in America’s Schools: From Put Downs to Lock Downs,” which speaks to the need for early prevention and “The Secrets for Motivating, Educating, and Lifting the Spirits of African-American Males.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I haven’t had a presentation that touched me as deeply as this, well thought out, keeping one’s rapt attention, ending in SO loving a “greeting”-it made me cry. I’ve taught school 17 yrs, retired. I’ve volunteered teaching art. Since I’ve gotten older I keep telling myself, “ I have no life left”….but after hearing this, maybe I DO. Thank you, Sir.

This was an amazing presentation. I can say that I have had the opportunity to work with and meet with the speaker! This is his authentic self...selfless acts of kindness!

Great message. I found a group that helps a lot with gangs in Fresno, CA Hope Now for Youth. Also help groups in our communities like Communities in Schools and help a kid before they get in a gang.

loved this. it is indeed in our hand. our duty, to deal with our small circle. one people at a time. one conversation when you look someone in the eye & show em you care. i especially liked the part about reaching in, identifying why you started to disconnect & later letting your voice be heard. in fact, it's easy to say "oh these kids are lost, they don't know nuthin about nuthin blabla no one helped me" but we fail to realize it's actually are jobs to teach them, & set em on the right path. now we are not talking about an abusive violent controlling "help" which is what may drive em into isolation or gang activities whatever you want to call it. bunch of hurt kids looking for trouble. we're talking about support, acknowledgement, information, compassion. just time, & patience. and intent. a fair intent to do good, within our own scope, within our small ability to affect change. thanks again.

Well said my friend…. There’s some people who will just never understand the issues that are involved and some can be fixed probabaly very easily, or at least impact that youth, we just need more volunteers. I’m actually looking to find a way to help out myself
