I seem to remember The Big Breakfast always being a fairly football-free zone in the first few years. The most you were likely to get was a very quick roundup from Peter Smith in the ITN news. The first time they really gave in-depth, dedicated coverage was during Euro '96. The whole show became dominated by it. Watching The Big Breakfast in 1994, you'd hardly know that the World Cup was taking place.

Don't forget that no UK team qualified in 1994. I think many TV shows were dominated by Euro 96 due to it being hosted by England, and that buzz was still going in 1998.

I seem to remember the entire crew chanting “There’s only one Gareth Southgate” as Mark Little introduced the news after England got knocked out of Euro 96.

@@birdy100 Yes, I vividly remember that. Cast and crew members lined up silently and sombre in front of the house, Zig started the chant. I think they were trying to quell the unfortunate hatred felt by some supporters towards Southgate. The whole episode was an absolutely grim hangover, dominated by Zoe Ball and Rodney Marsh conducting a post-mortem on the match and the ugly fallout of rioting and whatnot.
