As a Protestant, I was brought up to love the Bible deeply. I’m a Catholic now, and I love it more than I did before.

Glad to hear it. When I was a Catholic I never saw a bible. Three years of Catholic school, two years as an altar boy and living in a nominally Catholic family and I literally never laid eyes on a bible. That was in the 1960's around the time of Vatican II. I never laid hands on a bible until I got older and hung around with Protestants.

@@bulldozer8997 The priest uses a missal not a Bible during Mass. I mean I don't believe the guy either but it's technically possible. I'm with the rest of you. I got taught the Bible is sacred and the truth but my protestant dad made the mistake of actually letting me read it. I realized the Bible is pretty obviously telling you to be Catholic. From there it's a choice between atheist and Catholic and I asked the Holy Ghost to make the choice for me, and He apparently did. I truly believe any protestant is either a legitimate idiot, willfully ignorant, or a cryptoatheist. Unfortunately my dad (a pastor now 🤮) isn't an idiot and that doesn't leave any decent possibilities. He's gonna take my mom and all my brothers and sisters down with him, too, barring a miracle.

@@bulldozer8997 It's so incomprehensible. They say read the Bible for yourself and pray to the Holy Ghost for wisdom and guidance and I did and ended up Catholic. My dad doesn't really care since he just thinks you're golden as long as you're nominally trinitarian or something I guess (he came to my baptism, after all) but for some of them they have to appeal to either Luther's authority or their own in order to even address me. I just don't get how you can't see the inherent incoherence at that point.

@Instaurare Omnia In Christo You misunderstand me. I know bible passages are read during Mass. I had a missal full of bible passages and a catechism....but I didn't have an actual bible and neither did priests celebrating Mass in those days. Just an observation for what it's worth...not a lie.

I'm a bit of a Latin enthusiast, but this video makes me want to get educated enough to teach St Jerome's Bible in my Diocese. Praise God. Thank you for uploading, as always.

I always heard, especially from ”Catholic Professionals, ” that KJV is one of the best English translation. And, the RSV, which the current CCC uses, is the best modern English translation that is base from the KJV. Now, I'm convinced to get a Douay Rheims Bible now. Thank you Father!

In fact, and as an unprejudiced assertion, the KJB is widely held to be one of the most eloquent books in the English language; however, it is not used by serious Protestant, Orthodox, or Catholic scholars. Beyond its exquisite linguistic excellence, its reliability is famously substandard.

A few years ago I challenged myself to read the Bible from cover to cover. I did it. I used the Douay Rheims Bible online. There were many surprises.

I know what you mean….I was a Independent Fundamentalist Baptist (now I am a Catholic) and the first time I read the Douay Rheims I was surprised about the different spelling of names in the OT and the different numbering in the Psalms compared with my KJV Bible (which by the way I still love). There are those in the Catholic Church who want the DR to become the standard Bible for the Church again instead of the NAB or similar and I for one are with them.

This is off the subject, but why do people call the BVM "Mother Mary"? She, Herself, said all generations will call me Blessed. And to call Her by Her first name seems a little too "familiar" too me. I'm always a little taken aback by it.

I heard a priest from our diocese saying that the Old Testament was done; not important anymore. I seriously hope I got the context wrong, but I doubt it; many of our priests are *VERY* ill informed on many Church teachings, even regarding the sacraments. They need prayers, and may God have mercy on their souls, and remind them of their ministry.

Verum my old priest snapped at me in confession telling me to stay out of the OT. I’m a convert so I asked him if it matters what version of the Bible I use. He said it didn’t matter, I could even use my old Protestant bible because he uses them sometimes for his homilies depending on the translation he wanted.

​@@therese5361 Thankfully, we have a FSSP parish nearby, two latin masses per day, three on Sundays, confessions 30 min before every masses. Those priests are traditional and their homilies are really aimed at the well being of their parishioners' souls. I guess going to FSSP or SSPX parishes is the only "proper" way of hearing good sermons like we hear here.

Instaurare Omnia In Christo Yes, it was a NO priest. I came into the Church there., so there’s many things I didn’t know at the time. But I love the OT, and that was definitely a red flag for me to discern every single thing he said after that. I ended up searching out Catholicism on my own. I felt too Protestant still and wasn’t sure why. It led me to the parish I am in now, an Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (exclusively TLM community). I have never learned so much and never been so fulfilled!! And the community is warm and outgoing. I finally feel fully Catholic!

Beautiful sermon Father. With the deep crisis in the Church I sincerely hope the clergy and the faithful alike will read the Bible more often and restore the great Sermons we use to hear in the old times. As a Catholic I have heard some great Bible Study from Pastors -- with explanation using the Scriptures,Psalm, the proverbs..

As I am aware of what kind of English was used in the Douay Rheims Version, having this copy of the DRV can help me realize that something was degraded with how the English- speaking world would speak in English today (adding many words which some could make no sense), including myself.

Divino Afflante Spiritu does allow for newer translations based on the original manuscripts. Also, DAS also says that the Vulgate was declared authentic juridically, not "critically".

Its the declaration of the magisterium about the Vulgate that really matters, not scholarly criticism. The magisterium has divine authority and is infallible. Scholarly criticism is fallible, and is full of doubt, niggling and quibbling over texts.

This is a beautiful sermon.

There seem to be a few different versions of the Vulgate - could you clarify which one the Council of Trent was referring to? Is that version still in existance today, and is it used in the Douay-Rheims?

Where could we get the Latin Vulgata Bible translation? Where could we get it?

Thanks for GOD allowing me to find this sermon. As I was seeking to know his Truth. verses the so many so called bibles in circulation today. This found me today.

didn't St. Pius X approved translations of the Holy Scriptures directly from the Septuagint, aside from Latina Vulgata?

My favorite bible translation is the RSV - second catholic edition. But I’m growing more in love with the DR bible. I read both translations when I read the Bible now. The DR truly makes you appreciate the Catholic writers of the past. I remember reading Fulton sheen and see how he would use “josue” as a person from the Bible. I didn’t know that josue was Joshua. I think the name changes are the hardest part of me to transition to the DR bible. Josue, osse and other names I don’t recognize.

Thanks! I like the DR but I also like other Bible versions. I don't agree with everything in this sermon though. The Douay Rheims has been revised at least several times.

If we cannot agree on the right Bible, then no wonder there is so much misinformation. I realize that Christians in general are divided, but Catholics need to be on the same page in regards to the Bible + Catechism. Where can I buy an old vulgate bible?

It takes a few years to learn Greek or Latin. Then these conversations never have to be had again. Either 1: Greek: get Athenaze and then increase vocabulary afterward through reading and looking up vocabulary words from reading the original Greek Bible. Or 2: Latin: Familia Romana lingua Latina per se illustrata. Then read from the Vulgate looking up and increasing vocabulary. After 3-4 years of reading about an hour a day you’ll go from initially studying to eventually just reading. Greek might require you to work for a few weeks on the alphabet first, but writing down 3 x’s/day for 2 weeks and you’ll never need to do it again.

Dhuoay Rheims is a lot like the KJV but there’s a few name differences that can get annoying. RSV is is pretty good too

They sell the Douay-Rheims Bible on the EWTN Religious Catalogue. Both standard and pocket size.

We don’t know Latin! They stopped teaching us back in the 60’s and I wish they had not so reading the text in Latin we would not understand the scriptures! My mom bought a Holy Bible from 1967 that I treasure but it’s falling apart from reading it all these years and I guess age of the pages! Yes I’ve been reading the Bible since I was 4 years old! It started out with all the pictures and eventually the words! I’m hoping to find some place to rebound it for me!

Latin, yes that's what I was referring to in a preceding post. Sure, the Vulgate was endorsed but the D-R translation is just that, a translation. A priest said that the translation is inspired, also, but I don't think that's an official position.

I agree with a lot that you have to say. I am 46yrs old and am a product of Vatican 2 . There are a lot of things that changed. I don’t know why but I knew as a child that Vatican 2 was not a good move for the Church. I don’t know Latin to understand what is being said. So I’m happy in Vatican 2 they allowed mass to be said in the country’s native language. I do however believe that the 3rd secret of Fatima had something in it abt the faith being changed a little bit in the way it was taught. Sad really who do we think we are changing the word of God. The 3rd secret was to be told to the world upon the death of St. Lucia or in 1960 which ever came first. Not to mention communism and freemasonry has entered the Church by this time. They wanted to take the Church down from within. The pro reform was bad enough on its own. I don’t think many people know or think Martín Luther in a book abt himself actually says that he would converse with satan over the split. The Church used to stand firm on the fact is that true salvation comes only through our Church. We are the only ones that have the true body and blood of Jesus. Right there in black and white from His own mouth you must consume My body and blood to have eternal life within you. Also to speak against the Holy Spirit is the only unforgivable sin. There are many more ref I could list but I won’t. So Martín Luther lead so many people to hell for generations. This is why with the current state of things in the Church should not really be bothering. We were promised that the gates of hell will NEVER PREVAIL OVER HIS CHURCH. So you either trust God or you don’t. I understand it is hard to let go of this world and trust in God cuz we all think we are the ones in control and Gods just going to be happy with us even if we let this world be where we want or “riches “ should count toward Heavenly points. Sorry it doesn’t work that way. God Bless

KMF I can’t really remember the name of the book. I can try and ck with my sister though. There is also a u tube video on it as well. And of course I’ve watched so many. It came up as a recommended one for me to watch. You could try looking up his name. At any rate my sister is the info to verify some of the info. Sorry I can’t remember . God Bless

Look in your Bible at Genesis 3:15, what does your translation say? I've stopped reading versions which say he or it.

I was red pilled on this last year. For some reason it never struck me when it was read during mass until this last year that the translation that the USCCB had was incorrect and very confusing. However I do have a douay Rheims from 1957 by the Catholic book publishing company and Genesis 3:15 reeds he shall crush your head and you shall lie and wait for his heel. But I've looked at other douay-rheims versions and they say she shall Crush your head. So I don't know what's going on.

@Shameless Papist There's some who say 'she' refers to our Blessed Lady who will crush the head of the serpent as the Miraculous medal shows. Wish I had the mind of a theologian but I find this fascinating all the same!

@@KMF3 Surprised your 1957 DR Bible said he as today's Baronius press version I'm sure says 'she'. I like the Knox Bible personally. Like someone else said he, she or it doesn't matter but on the other hand the miraculous medal shows our Lady crushing the head of the serpent.

Because traditionally my understanding is that the reading she means Mary will crush the head of Satan. And that's just a further embarrassment of the devil that he is defeated by a woman a human woman at that. And that she Stomps on his head with her foot

@Shameless Papist Agree about the KJV. Obviously it'll never be 'my' bible because of the omissions, but it was accurate enough to use for study when I did a bit of Koine Greek at university. There's a beauty to its use of the English language too.

There is now a Catholic Edition of the KJV as well; which makes sense considering the 1611 and even the Revised (Authorized) King James of 1769 both contained the Deuterocanonicals, although they were considered Apocrypha(l).

I like a lot of what this priest says, but does he forget that the Douay itself has been through several revisions and the one commonly in print today is the Challoner edition? It should be just as condemned by his own standards...

I think he knows that there is no problem with little adjustments that technology provide us, but if you see, there are many translations and versions of the bible that are removing many verses (even classical ones, like that of Pericope Adulterae) of the Bible because in theory they are not in the "ancient" manuscripts..., despising totally the latin vulgate by the Council of Trent.

unfortunately this is a really misleading sermon, do you not realise FR that that vulgate itslef, the old latin vulgate, was revised following trent a number of times by good holy popes. Also we need translations of the old latin vulgate, hence you will always have many translations.

Where did you get that information from? The Gospel of John was probably written as late as 95 AD during the reign of Caesar Domitian, and there's a verse in John to prove it.

@@70AD-user45 I think it has to do with a careful examination of the books for any hint whether the Temple had been destroyed or Jerusalem attacked by the Romans.

The “daily bread” we read in Matthew 6:11, was originally rendered by St. Jerome as “epiousios,” that is, “supersubstantialem,” or super-substantial) bread. Epiousios is a rare Greek word and occurs in the New Testament only here and in Luke 11:3. In Jerome's Latin Vulgate, we translate "panem nostrum supersubstantialem da nobis hodie,” to, “give us this day our supersubstantial bread.” Would that we were saying this when questions of the Real Presence first reared their viperous heads.

I don't like reading scriptures from KJV bec I know It's a Protestants bible which removed 8 books from original bible, then I found an old bible of Catholic in a thrift store which is really good bible but when I checked the publisher online to order more of this bible it was discontinued bec the publisher is now owned by Protestant....sadly, they don't sell it anymore!

The New Testament focuses on Christ's sacrifice & redemption. What can be more significant and meaningful than that? Unless you put Mose & Elijah in high regard above God- the- Son. Didn't Jesus once said, 'What did Moses and your forefathers taught you?, Now I tell you this ....'

Jerome at one time seemed to question the inclusion of the deuterocanonical books into the bible, and used Hebrew sources for much of his translation. Although the Greek translation( the Septuagint) of some of the Old Testament verses seemed to be more supportive from a prophetic point of view regarding Christ. Verses such as Psalm22:16 or Isaiah7:14 for example. Jerome yielded to the authority of the Church though, some of the translations that this priest seems to be casting aspersions upon have been _approved by the Church._ Maybe this priest should take Jerome's example, he also mentions Augustine, but Augustine in his writings seemed to prefer the Septuagint over all other translations including that done by Jerome. I use the NRSV personally, I find it very good.

The Hebrew version that St. Jerome used is very different from the one that Luther used. The ancient Hebrew did not have the diacritical marks found on the newer masoretic texts. Those markings fix a meaning of the OT scripture that is deliberately anti-Christian. You can see the difference in the OT scripture found in the dead sea scrolls. e.g. Ps 22 (21):17 "They have dug my hands and feet." vs "like a lion are my hands and feet." The masoretic translators, 900 years after the fact, changed the meaning of their scripture to point away from Christ. It is small wonder that Jesus is referred to in the talmud by an acronym that stands for ""May his name and memory be blotted out.""

The title might lead people to understand they should read the Old Testament and not the New Testament. While father is warning us against those “new exegetes” who pretend having a better understanding than the Fathers of the Church, than Saint Jerome, the Vulgate translator. Some protestants Bibles are sold in supermarket close to the fish’s étalage. We should stick to the Old version of the Bible (Old and New Testament) ans reject the new exegesis of the modernist. + Marc Dem + wrote in “God and his successors” that the Bible translated by Fidel Castro is still in circulation in Southern America. That’s why (also) we have this painful synod.

0:56 God used Greek for the New Testament. Jesus and the apostles used the Greek Septuagint. I personally love Latin more than Greek but Greek is the holy language of the New Testament and therefore the most important language.

@Love God & Neighbor. The New Testament was only written in Greek. Yes, there are some Aramaic/Hebrew and Latin (flagellum, praetorium, augustus) words in the NT. That doesn't make it Latin/Aramaic/Hebrew.

God didn't use Greek men used Greek and this just me it has something to do with Rome....as traditional as the Jews I highly doubt that they will go out of the way to change to a whole language to keep their Holy word when they consider Hebrew a holy language and for good reason... also to note that if they read their own bible which the righteous would..they would know all prerequisites for to even call something a new testament in the first place... if the prerequisites aren't met then it simply hasn't come yet....Jeremiah 31:31-36 highlights this easily... very explicitly tells you what must happen.....if one says it has happened and it has been fulfilled already with Jesus which they do point to quoting jesus... then they have been molded into the so called new testament primarily ....a true jew would know that it hasn't been fulfilled yet.... and also nothing was undid of what they called original sin also...nothing has been fulfilled...if you can prove Jeremiah 31:31-36 has been fulfilled then you are living somewhere in the future because it's not even here yet...and if it isnt...it's not even supposed to be a new scripture in fact if you read the verses you would have to highlight everything and ask yourself a question...if Jesus didn't fulfill it then maybe when he comes back....but if you say that you will also recognize that if that's true then how can I call this book the new testament if it was never fulfilled in the first place

God communicated with Israel who spoke hebrew and aramaic which is literally exactly like hebrew with just some minor differences..greek came when jesus and rome came... Jesus had a greek name not a jewish name strange enough and the entire new testament christian bible is greek...all this in the time of Rome even stranger... being accepted 1st by outsiders(3 wisemen) then the entire world even now but not the majority of Jews? Death came after Jesus not the Covenant.... what was the covenant God gave the Jews... the REAL New covenant??? was that fulfilled ...it literally tells you in Jeremiah 31... so tell me if the signs for it happening ever happened? OR... is that Greek testament just claiming it happened even though it didn't? I must add if you haven't figured it out... I am NOT a christian

The vulgate is an important historical relic and cultural artifact in the history of Christianity but we can objectively prove that it is not the best translation of either the Hebrew Bible or the Gospels and does not reach as near to the true form of their original authorship as modern translations made with all the advances in knowledge of the earliest known versions of these texts. Regardless of the opinions of medieval priests this is proven fact. You can be mad about it or you can be happy that we know more about the scriptures than we ever have.

Why then not the Vatican and its council, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit translate the old Latin Vulgate into all languages throughout the world so that it can be understood by mankind by all professional linguist clergies, that exactly translate as it was worded in the LATIN VULGATE. . That way such will be the only translation that will be used. God bless.

The Vatican did arrange for the translation of the Latin Vulgate into different languages. The Douay-Rheims translated it into English, but English has changed over time. We now call the English of the Douay-Rheims "Early Modern English." It's the English of King James and Shakespeare. A minor revision of the Douay-Rheims, called the Challoner version, was made in about 1899 or thereabouts, but the language remained Early Modern English, even though by the late 19th Century English had developed into Modern English, which we speak today. All living languages change over time, so the Early Modern English translation of the Latin Vulgate is becoming less understood by most people -- it's almost becoming a foreign language. I understand it because it was taught in a course I took in high school, to help us read Shakespeare and other literary works. But there were only a handful of us in the class, so very few others learned it. I do hope the Latin Vulgate will be translated into the Modern English we speak today.

What's wrong with the Dead Sea Scrolls? The entire book of Isaiah from at the latest one hundred years before Christ? In the Great Isaiah Scroll you can read the prophecy of the Virgin giving birth to a Son named Emmanuel and realize you are reading an accurate prophecy in this case from a manuscript that was written down pen to parchment more than a century before it happened. There is nothing cooler than that. Father is absolutely right about the Masoretic texts only being a thousand years but other than that traditionalists need to get over their allergy to Hebrew. And as for the Vulgate it needs a better English translation than the Douay-Rheims Challoner. The Douay Rheims English is archaic and in a lot of cases not very beautiful. It just doesn't live up to the majesty of the Vulgate when you read it Latin.

Yeah from what I understand the Biblical Dead Sea Scrolls are more or less in agreement with the Septuagint, no?

@@gl.1758 They agree with the Septuagint in many places where there are variant readings. Enough in fact that the whole notion of the Masoretic text as the 'original' that we inherited from the V2 era needs to be totally reevaluated. Oh if only the field of Biblical scholarship contained people doing actual scholarship rather than people who are just trying to shove their ideology down everybody's throats...

I only know two places for modern translation catholic and Protestant bibles. The garbage bin and the fire. Ignore what Protestants say here. Just trolls. Baltimore, St Piux X and Council of Trent catechisms and Douay Rheims Bible are more than enough. We have the fullness of the faith, not heretics.

Have the decency and honesty to call it the Jewish book. And Jesus never matched the prophecy of the coming messiah so therefore was rejected. The whole of the Hebrew Scriptures from the Bereshit of Genesis to the last words of the prophet Malachi are a prophecy of Jesus Christ so spare me the bull and try reading Isaiah 53.

Decently and honestly: the Catholic Church is the people of Israel. We have the temple and sacrifice (Christ's body). Those 1st Century Jews who did not get baptized cut themselves off from God (this is why both Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Paul used the term as a pejorative in the epistles). The modern Jewish religion (talmudic judaism) was founded after the destruction of the second temple. It is a false religion, younger than Christianity and its canon was set hundreds of years after the canon of the Christian Bible.

the true bible is from the eastern orthodox church copy of the bible as it was from true apostolic times, and not the one we knew in the west not even of the roman church.

The true Bible is that which the Council of Rome ratified and commissioned Jerome to translate as a compilation. Before that, there was not agreement upon those texts which were infallible products of the Holy Ghost and which texts were of human-only origin.

Fine, but it's absurd to think anyone can just pick up a bible and understand the typology and symbolism. You need a good commentary, like Scott Hahn's. Some priests think that you can just say a prayer and the answers will hit you on the head from above. That's tempting God to work unnecessary miracles; it's not going to happen.

Well I wouldn't say that it's never going to happen because that's what happened to me. I picked up a douay Rheims Bible and didn't know the first thing about it and read it from cover to cover and was converted.

@@magaman6353 my first reading of the Bible was over 30 years ago so since then I definitely have been reading a lot. I've read a lot of history of the church fathers and doctors of the church and done many Catholic scripture studies. So since my initial conversion yeah I've continued to learn. you're right you don't know what you don't know. So I continue to learn and am learning so much. This is one of the reasons I listen to these KZread videos

@@melindabloom7281 The Catholic Church canonized the new testament at the end of the fourth/beginning of the fifth century. The first four centuries there was no new testament, you got it from the Catholic Church. Nor Jesus nor God did distribute the bible, why do you trust a book, but not the agent. The Catholic Church gave us the bible not the other way round. We got the old testament from Israel, but the new testament we got from the Catholic Church, the New Israel. The Catholic Church, a 2000 years old institute does not have ethnic, racial, national, economic, or political boundaries. So that you can say: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male & female, for we are all one in Christ Jesus.” Gal 3:28. Jesus founded one Church in Mat 16, 18 and authorized leaders who authorized other leaders and so on. In this way you get an unbroken line of authorized leaders from day 1 until this very day. Jesus promised his Church to keep her in all truth and He will with her till the end of times. Not the bible but the Church (Jesus founded in Mat 16,18) is the bulwark of truth.

aad schram ...God have us the Bible. The idea that the world is supposed to thank the Catholic Church for gracing the world with the Truth of God’s Word is prideful. And, if Catholics are responsible for the Bible, then why is it that the Catholic Church doesn’t resemble the church that Jesus began? With the doctrines of purgatory, the rosary, praying to Mary & the saints etc, none of these, plus many many more, are found in the Bible.

@@melindabloom7281 It is not prideful but a fact that God used the Catholic Church to select a number of inspired scriptures out of all the writings that floated in the ancient world and compiled a book named the new testament being the Word of God at the end of the fourth/and beginning of the fifth century. The doctrine of the trinity and the doctrines you mentioned above already existed long before the new testament had been compiled. In the early centuries of Christianity most of the people then were illiterate and making a book was expensive. In those days the gospel had been spread through the ancient world through preaching by the Catholic Church, there was not a book named new testament. Do you think that the Catholic Church would compile a book that could be used against her. You have to read the new testament with the original lenses and not with the lenses of Protestantism. Did you know that Luther wanted to eliminate some books from the new testament which were not in line with his view. aad schram ...the doctrine of the Trinity, even tho it is rejected by the Jews, begins in Genesis 1:1...”In the beginning God created the heavens & the earth.” The Hebrew word for God is Elohim, a plural name for God which explains Genesis 1:23...”let Us make man in Our image...”. But the other “traditions” of purgatory, indulgences, the rosary, praying to Mary & the saints, Mary the ark of the New Covenant, Mary as mediator, Mary as Advocate, Mary Mary Mary. Where is ANY of this in the Bible? It’s not. In fact, these are all contrary to Scripture. Where is Jesus in this faith? In fact...these heresies became doctrine LONG AFTER the canon of Scripture came to be. The assumption of Mary became doctrine in 1950!! The Bible is to be read with an open mind, no preconceived ideas, & certainly NOT thru any lens, Catholic or otherwise. We are supposed to let God teach us His Truths in His Word, not stubbornly tell Him what His Word means. Plus the New Testament is a continuation of the Old Testament. Jesus didn’t start a new religion. He & the New Testament is the fulfillment of the Old Covenant. That’s why it’s so important to read it as a whole. The New Covenant explains the Old & vice versa. And, the church rests on the Truth, as it is in Christ, NOT THE TRUTH RESTING ON THE CHURCH. The church is made up of fallen sinners, so how can the church rest on a bunch of sinners? It can’t. It has to rest on the Word that became flesh...full of grace & Truth.
