It's stories like these that help me justify switching my major from Accounting to English and becoming a teacher. I sort of wish that the third part of this story wasn't lost, but in a way I'm kind of glad that it is missing because I like the way it ended with part 2. Chekhov often likes to end his stories on a downer, so maybe it's better we only have 2 surviving parts to this story.

Man, I love listening to you guys talk about these classics. I actually hadn't heard of this story, most of my experience with Chekov being his plays, but this one sounds really great and classic Chekov with another, to me, unsatisfying ending! I always leave Chekov feeling down.

The 2 Million to 15 years comparison is something we see in Real life as well. Successful Billionaires are mostly old. And most of them say that they are ready to give it up for returning to their Youth.

I found this video after I listened to a lecture by David McNally on history of money as he makes the argument that money historically has derived by human bondage and the fear of capital punishment. I remembered "The bet" as Checkov in his absolute genius is essentially making the same argument - that in our absurd world bondage and the loss of life can be valued as money. Slavery, serfdom, prison industrial complex can be calculated is some abstract IOU's.

Yeah, exactly. I can't remember which video we talked about it but money is a universal agreed upon conversion step. So instead of trading apples for bananas, we turn apples in money and the bananas into money and then exchange the money. It's like everything in our lives is somehow converted into the form of money as a universal indicator of value. It's so completely normal to us that looking at a life as that question can seem shocking to us and what value does one put on it.

If the note was to free the Banker from his obligations to the Lawyer, why would the Banker lock it away in a safe? Alas! The Banker is the gatekeeper to the hellish existance pronounced in the lawyers letter.

I didn’t know that it’s going to be this deep… I need to submit the homework in 5 hours and I also have to translate to Russian language… (yep it’s for Russian language class) I’m so done Chekhov is gone crazy bro wtf this is way worse than death penalty and life in prison 😢

It's about a man who refused the money purposely AS A SELFISH ACT! HE DIDNT TRUST HIMSRLF TO "STAY TRUE" if he were to get it! He knew that the money would have corrupted his morals and ethics and virtue..he had suffered so long already...that his freedom alone was a GIFT!!! if he took the money.... he knew that the chances of being inveloped by the bondage of the self would be 100 percent.

The Banker was focused on External things because he lived in external world. The Lawyer lived like a Monk. That's the only way to escape the materialistic desires. However, both of them ended up unhappy. In words of Kafka, *I then realised Nothing truly will ever satisfy me.*
