The Best & Worst WoW Raids RANKED! - Part 1

WoW has been around for a long time now, and with it a large number of raids have come and gone, but which ones are the best and which ones are the real stinkers. In this 2 parter Mike will rank (nearly) all raids from worst to best. This is gonna be a big one.

His 'content' has gotten stale ever since he just became a full time dungeon and raid dude. When him and Ghosty were playing together they made videos that had heart and enthusiasm in them. I get that his favorite thing to do is raid and gear up his one main, but when you go back to his days in Legion, the daily preach videos were far and away better than what he's put out latey. He actually played different classes, he tanked and healed, he made guides for those roles, he gave status updates every patch and for every raid. Somewhere in BFA he lost that spark, and it's sad. But I am glad to see this type of content from him again. He's still on my mount rushmore of WoW content creators, but he's definitely not doing anything to separate himself from the pack anymore. I mean, making a video about why you can't get into a group based o your raider.io score? That's the content he has now, compared to the legacy videos he previously made with the catalog of info and highlight footage that he's amassed over the years? It's sad.

@@blacksunshine9995 Preach has always been about that though. While the primary content at the start was about making class guides, there have always been videos discussing things about the game as a whole, albeit specifically things surrounding the PvE raid environment and the balance and state of class gameplay. And regarding playing other classes: back in Legion it was actually fun to level alts in spite and actually because of artifacts. Of course, also because of the mage tower. It hasn't been that way in BfA and not really in SL either. Can't blame him for that, especially after his guild died down (which usually gives anyone involved a bump in motivation to play), the raid hasn't been that good either on mythic and he's been livestreaming non-WoW stuff from 8:30 to currently ~15:00 daily outside of weekends, give or take, that have been simply more interesting and enjoyable to do.

Hyjal has literally nothing going for it. The story behind it does not make any sense at all, BC raids are usually just an excuse to throw popular characters as bosses for the sake of it, but Hyjal is not even an excuse, go back in time for the LOLz. The mechanics are horrendous and unimaginative, the "mob waves" fight style was honestly better executed in Ahn'Qiraj, the bosses might as well be leveling dungeon bosses, their mechanics are stupid. It's visuals are cool, but they are insulting, because instead of making Hyjal a zone with the files they had since vanilla, they opted for turning them into a lazy raid to fill in a tier.

Really cool to have Mike's concrete thoughts on the different raids. It's fun to see others' points of view and how much of raiding depends on circumstances; who you play with, what you did at the time and how the "launch process" was. Not completely done with the video, but I'm gonna throw in my pick for first. I think Siege of Orgrimmar was the best for me. I was in a 10-man raid with real life friends of very varying skill - mostly terrible at raiding, which made it so much more fun because we were all oblivious of how bad we were. It was awesome having a long raid of pretty good and different bosses that we could clear in our two raid days.

The raid was dying off, maybe five people left, the boss on a sliver of health, me up in the air using wings as a ret paladin. Popped Avenging Wrath, divebombed the boss in combination with Blade of Justice... and it was a killshot. I slammed that boss into the GROUND. Whole guild cheered too... it looked absolutely epic from their viewpoint as well.

For me personally, Emerald Nightmare had one of my favourite fights as a tank, and it's the Dragons of Nightmare, I mean, the tank mechanic is to have two huge ass fucking dragons switch positions, keeping in mind cleaving and tail swiping, with the extra caveat, that if you don't do it properly it's just an instant wipe. It felt so satisfying when it worked out after the first few pulls. I understand it being a bit on the weaker side for DPS and healers, but for me, one of the best.

I really liked Trial. All of the bosses have something good going on with innovative ideas. No annoying trash you have to deal with. No long walks after a wipe and the best thing in my opinion is that the whole thing is extremely atmospheric and has a place in the story of the expansion. Why are we fighting those bosses? Because we try to determine the strongest champions who gonna be the vanguard for the siege of ICC. They are not just some random bosses standing in the middle of an empty room waiting for you to kill them with no apparent job other then being the evil guy. At the end it ties back into the overall story really nicely when the Lichking shows up, fucks the whole place up and gives you a real challenge. The whole tournament setup and environtment is also a nice contrast to the rest of the expansion which is all about death, grand schemes, big places and the bleak darkness and cold. Some whimsical to give you a moment to breathe. But the ending of the whole affair reminds you that there is no escaping the grip of the Lichking and that death is all around you in northrend. I can understand why people don't like the raid, it is definitely not something that should be used as a Prototype for other raids. But in the context of the expansion and the role it was meant to fill I think they did a fantastic job with it.

Cataclysm should've been delayed for 2-3 months minimum. The horrible state it was in on launch is what killed at least 1 raid (Abyssal Depths). Blizz tried to hide it behind several reasons, but imo that was the main reason why that raid was scrapped.

Another reason Emerald Nightmare is so disliked is because Legendaries had such a huge impact on performance. It felt awful being so far behind other DPS of the same spec just because you didn't high roll your first or second lego. Plus, as was the norm with Legion, tank balance was awful so there's that too.

@@Loomx5 raiding has always been the premiere activity in WoW imo. PvP and dungeons were fun but they constantly had to fundamentally morph how they worked throughout the years whereas raiding, outside of difficulty shifts and accessibility changes was still the same at its core.

I like how ToT us praised by almost everyone, and it sucks that i never raided it when was current only doing transmo runs, and that was thanks to HoF. What a shitty, boring, and ugly raid imo. My entire raid group got sick of it, some took breaks until the next raid, some who still wanted to raid regardless look for another guild and the mayority including me took a break until the next expansion... Damn i hate HoF lol

Stuff like this is interesting, because your memories and experiences at the time heavily influence whether you liked objectively what could be considered a good boss or not. My guild at the time was SUPER toxic in WoD and tainted so much of what should have been a great raiding experience.

Gorefiend in HFC was actually a spectacular fight. The bad reputation comes from it being WAY more difficult than the earlier bosses, and a lot of the later bosses so it killed a lot of guilds. In my opinion Gorefiend was an awesome fight to progress.

I want to hear Mike’s thoughts on mythic Denathrius, Sylvanas, Jailer, Raza, Sark, Fyrakk. I really want to hear more in depth thoughts on these fights on why he likes it or doesn’t on a per fight basis. Similar to how Max ranks the bosses in the raid after the race, but hearing it from Preach would be so good. Not overall raids but fights on a per fight basis in a raid.

I have only been a raider since late nighthold and became a mythic raider in Antorus. My first CE was Jaina. As a main a rogue(yes, I hate my life right now) Tomb heroic was an awesome first raid for me. As only rogue in the guild, it was an awesome time to learn more and become a better raider. "ooh, I can cheeze that, ooh I can cheeze this, ooh I can cheeze that aswell". On every boss. I asked myself so many times: "why don't everyone want to play a rogue? Superfun class and you can cheeze on every boss" I 100% understand other peoples perspective of "We need to get 8 rogues in to make this mechanic trivial" but as a solo rogue in a heroic guild, it was an awesome raid to become a better raider. Similar with Antorus. Great first raid to become a mythic raider in. To have the responsibility on Varimathras, the fun part of Kingaroth, the discussions I had in rogue discord. Awesome time, and I want to get back to that time. Guild didn't get to Aggramar and Argus, so if people say those fights are bad maybe my memory of Antorus is in one way more pure. And I loved mythic + in legion. BFA was ok, SL is dogshit. And of course since I was a rogue, I loved Za'qul. I believe that if you were in the delirium realm, you loved Za'qul. If you wasn't. You hated it.

My favourite raid is actually last raid of Legion I enjoyed most of the bosses yet my fav boss of all time is Mr Star Boy in Nighthold hah so many people hated him. I have a lot of nostalgia for ICC when I first started looking at raiding more seriously, pugging was so much easier back then.. The world was so alive and so many friends eager to do stuff in game, what a time it was.

My g/f and I had a 10-man guild and on Halfus literally her only job was to spam Wind Shear and interrupt him because since it was tuned to 25-man, the casts happened far too often. As a HW during Vanilla and “hardcore” raider during TBC and WotLK what I will say is the role/class you played during raids will have a huge influence how much you enjoy a tier. Raiding as a mage during vanilla, even during the awesome BWL / AQ40 was pretty boring at times. I changed to healer at start of TBC all the way through to end of WotLK and I far more enjoyed all those bosses even the rubbish ones to even the awesome vanilla bosses. I actually felt pressure and played a major reason why bosses died as a healer.

UBRS and LBRS where both 15 man (not surprising considering that you had to enter LBRS to even get to UBRS - its technically one dungeon, not two. People mostly forget that Scholomance and Stratholme where originally both 10 man raids as well btw. Zul Aman was a ton of fun, however one of the bosses where problematic: The cat boss. The problem was that the tanks had to stand on top of each other within one meter - doesn't sound hard but Tauren had a larger hitbox than the other races and Gnomes had a smaller hitbox. This caused issues if one of the tanks was a tauren or gnome and the other wasn't because depending on who was tanking at the moment when the attack came that had to be split the tanks didn't count as standing within 1 meter if the wrong one had the aggro. That caused a huge amount of wipes at the time for many guilds, especially because no one really knew what was going on for a few days.

C'Thun was the hardest boss in WoW history and i loved it. The fact that we went from simple tank & spank boss designs where there was 1 tiny mechanic like "you are the bomb" or "this requires one guy to dispel something" or "this requires a 2nd tank to taunt the boss" to full on: There are 100 things to be aware of, everyone needs to position themselves, there are 20 things to watch out for, everyone needs to do this, to different phases.... the JUMP in complexity and things that need your attention, things that could go wrong. It was MASSIVE. Also the margin for error was quite small. It 1-2 dps died on one side, there was no way to kill the large tentacles in time before the next would spawn. In just every way it was like 20 steps up from every other boss in the game so far.

When I think of quintessential WoW experiences, Molten Core - Mount Hyjal - Sunwell all are cemented in my memory. They're in his worst 5. Easily could pick a single raid from each expansion from MoP onwards that trump these. Molten Core was raiding 101 for a new audience; Hyjal was the easier tier 6 progression option. Sunwell was the end raid and intended to be hard (in the same was Naxx was hard in Vanilla).
