    small mistake on the point made that 300 armors protect you the same as 90 armor and is just a difference of 210 damage. The 300 armor will protect you much more than the 90 because of armor penetration and the calculation mechanic of damage. let's say i take someone with 90 armor getting hit by hatchet (25-40 damage, 30% ignore armor and 110% armor penetration). Let's calculate with a 40 hit to make it simple. the 90 armor will take the following, 40*1.1 = 44 armor damage, health will take the following, 40 * 0.3 = 12 health damage but is also reduced by 10% of the remaning armor (46 armor left) meanting you just taken 7 or 8 health damage the 300 armor will get the same calculations (ignoring battleforged because that's another topic in itself) armor damage taken is also 44 (same calculation as before) but health damage is 40*0.3 - 10% of the remaining armor (266) meaning 12-26 = 0 don't forget that i used an hatchet as a calculation but it's even more telling when looking at some high penetration weapons like crossbows. it can make a large difference on a 60 damage hit with 50% penetration if you reduce it by 5 or by 26 ( 90 armor would take 25 health damage while 300 armor would take 4 damage from a crossbow) it is also considered in the chances of injuries and other things.

    On day two of my current campaign, I hired a grave robber with one star for mdfn and fat with dexterity trait. Normally I would just use him as fodder but in the first battle he kill two thugs with his dagger, while the other fodders died. So there was something lucky about him. Fast forward 100 days, he’s level 10 with a famed dagger and has dagger mastery. He was able to solo an orc warrior as he would dodge attacks and puncture the orc to death. He was a really fun bro but sadly his time came to end from the hands of an orc champion. A dagger build can be pretty powerful but is limited in its use. Mostly for human and orc. It made him unique compared to the other bro’s who were generic in a sense.

    I always build my companies like a phalanx or a manipule : heavy close-combat units in front, with armors and huge shields to hold as many damages as possible (with perks like 9 lives, dodge, fast adaptation, shield expert and brawny), and long range weapons on the back rear with polearms. It's hard to decide which one choose : I often use the pike, which can thrust and hit a lot, but I am more vulnerable to foes equiped with shields, by doing this. So I choose the great axe, to break the ennemy's shield, and support the front with aditionnal hits (though the axe hit less frequently than the pike). Great axe is great againt ennemies equiped with shields, and a lot of armor (like ancient legionnaries or heavy militia). Pikes, on the other hand, are more usefull against swarming ennemies, with less armor (like beasts or low-level undeads).

    Throwing can be used to "exploit the gap" like legions did. You dont make a continious line, you leave a 1-2 tile gap in the middle and try to funnel the enemy into it with spearwalls on your flanks. When they get locked down by the men at the sides of the gap, you can shoot through. If you have 3 throwers thats 6 javelins per turn. Once they run out, you have them switch to their polearms. Throwing is fatigue intensive but polearming is not, so it works.

    The strongest weapon depends on the opponent you are facing and what stage of the game you are at. For example flails are great against undead legionaires but pretty terrible against unholds. Early game bros benefit alot from the bonus hit from spears and swords but that benefit drops off late game. A strong clever is good throughout the game against raiders and thugs because not all of them wear helmets and if you hit them in the head you'll generally kill them. They are also good against zombies because you can decapitate them and prevent them from being resurrected. It is all horses for courses in this game. Despite what this chap says hammers are great early game as you can punch through armour and kill opponents quickly reducing the damage you take and increasing the chance of getting weapons. It is better to smash chest armour and get a sword and helmet than to smash both the helmet and chest armour with a sword and take damage for your troubles.

  • @CarveaHole

    @CarveaHole

    If you're farming weapons then yeah hammers are great! My point about them being weak early game is that they're bad for farming armor, which is critical in the first days. In late game when you don't care about armor, hammers become so much better because of what you're talking about. Cheers :D

    @@CarveaHole armour matters early doors but I look at it this way. Any time you get hit you'll use tooks to repair. Those tools cost 200+ normally so if you have an early armour of say 70 and it gets broken by a hammer hit it will cost you the best part of 5 tools to repair which will cost between 50 and 80 gold. Saving on tools will help you build the money for 115ish armour early doors so you can take on raiders. Also hammers tend to break one piece of armour with the second shot either causing a severe blunt injury or leaving the opponent open to be smashed by high damage weapons such as cleavers or bows. It is different way of looking at the early game but it works well if your striker bros have hammers and the rest have swords, spears and the like. In effect I go by the priciple of kill them quick and with as little risk as possible so you can do as many fights in as short a period of time possible. I bring nets to help with reducing the opponents defence and reducing attacks back early doors as being hit once costs more than the net so it is worth the trade in most cases in the early game. I do net up and stab down leaders and try to stab down broken guys if the risk of doing so is low for example if they are the last man. Battle brothers is a hard game but a good one. I'm just putting forward unconventional wisdom that works and will work well for players that are less experienced than yourself by reducing the risk they take to build their team and reducing their wipes.

    @@CarveaHole I agree and your video was one of the better for soing that. Most other videos offer no insight and seem to be based on luck more than thought and preperation and relying on luck is not a fun way to play the game as eventually it runs out. Don't get me wrong, I still stab down leaders and the like and bring flails to take off the heads of thugs and raiders that don't have helmets where possible but I wouldn't want anyone to incur damage which costs more than the armour they are trying to farm. Minimising hidden costs like using staff slings to reduce the cost of ammo and hammers etc to reduce tool use is one way of maximising income by minimising cost.

    I would say that throwing weapons, and so hybrid archers are great at mid to late game, specially if you get a first/second crisis the noble war because theyre a reliable way to melt heavy armor but also have solid health damage. The good thing is that those archers dont fall off fighting any type of enemy... Be it orcs, lindwurm, brigands and barbarians with lots of armor and health or goblins, wolves, spiders and necromancers to snipe down. They work great with a reeally tanky frontline, to which 2handed maces and ofc shields help a lot. I think that they dont get the penalty as a ranged weapon does for ghosts so theyre a good way to deal with them too if you dont have whips but im not sure, youd have to check...

    I've seen some people use archer/polearm hybrids to great effectiveness, but I haven't tried them myself - probably should. I don't get why people hate on 1-handed flails. Get a brute character, give him headhunter and duelist, and its pretty damn amazing. Been thinking about adding crippling strikes and executioner for an early farming build with three-headed flail, just not sure about the interaction yet, as in if you can get a wound on the first hit, and get the bonus damage for second and third. The damage is low on the individual hits, but I'm curious if duelist/crippling can make up for it. The build would be something like Student-Recover-Crippling Strikes-Executioner-Fail Mastery-Head Hunter-Duelist-Berserk-Killing Frenzy-Underdog-Nimble. Not in any thought-out order

    1h flails are amazing early game when you have low Matk brothers, but I'm imagining that late game I'd rather have a legendary orc axe than a flail. Go against a fallen hero with his 240+ helm and the flail won't do shit, but an axe/cleaver duelist will wreck them. Do get back to me if you find that the flail bro works though, I'd love to see it!

    some of the enemies if you can tackle them early make for really strong weapons in the early game. The goblin pikes are awesome because you can move twice and still attack, or attack twice with polearm mastery. The goblin swords and dagger/swords are pretty great too. There is a fairly frequent mission early where you go to pick up something in a tomb, and if you take the polearm there too you get a polearm that can hit in a 3 tile AOE which is a monster early weapon. The ancient auxilliaries have pretty sick polearms as well iirc?

Run a combination on those and the wip on your archers and 2h cleaver / duelists and every fight doable. And armor is easy, if you are battle forged, highest armor amount is top priority and for nimble your armor should have a fatigue cost of I think max 14 or 15.

I didn't forgo melee defense completely, he has two stars after all, so there will be plenty of 3' rolls. The character is a god damn beast. Hardly ever gets hit, when he does colossus and nimble makes it negligible and he deals a surprising amount of damage. My seed rolled him as a brute, but I can't imagine that being such a big deal. In retrospect I wish I just did headhunter on him instead of rotate. You get so much mobility from a fencing sword anyways, and you can lunge out of zone of control.

    @sfg gh Polearms like the billhook and pike benefit from the polearm mastery perk and as such can be used for 5 AP. This makes them much more versatile than the longaxe/polehammer. You don't see bow or crossbow and polehammer hybrids.

  • @CarveaHole

    @CarveaHole

    @sfg gh That's wrong - 5 AP is a huge buff. A pure polearm user, the ability to move 1 forward, attack, and then move back can be incredibly useful. You can cycle two bros in to attack from the same hex. You can also always stay away from your frontline so that orc warriors don't charge through. Take 5 AP + pathfinder and you can do that in forests/snow too.

    Two handed weapon counted as polearm? Or any weapon two handed weapon that has 2 range? Since you mention polehammer when you cover polearm skill

  • @CarveaHole

    @CarveaHole

    It's a bit confusing. The polehammer counts as a hammer (but acts like a polearm because it has two range), and the longaxe counts as an axe. The Blazing Deserts DLC introduces the polemace, which counts as a mace. This wiki page covers all the melee weapons in each category battlebrothers.fandom.com/wiki/Melee_Weapons

    Don't you need more vision if you have high ground range advantage? So essentially your capping your vision at the range of the weapon to flat ground, but the range bonuses you would normally get for higher ground are lost.

    @CarveaHole When you are on higher ground, you have a bonus to range. You lose that advantage when you wear armor that limits your vision to the 'normal' range of a weapon. I get a better hit, but if I lose range height advantage because I capped my vision to 4 or 6 because it gives me the best armor for the head at the time. I felt that the additional range is worth having ranged weapon head armor to be just a little less limiting. That extra 1 or 2 range can make a big difference.

    You should script a bit more what you say and when you say it. You start off by saying that this is for the early game and then explain endgame gear for a solid 5 minutes. The information provided is good, while the structure isn't. It helps just taking a piece of paper and put like an index on that you can keep watching at. In this case you would have wanted to start with the weapons & tier information and wrap it up on endgame gear. Great job though thanks!

    @@asdfkljlkjdfkg2290 Unless you're playing a Lone Wolf campaign from WotN, then you won't have a catch-all 12 man super team. Your comp will depend on the type of battle you're about to fight. In my 800+ day campaign, I have 3 archers, 4 hybrids, 1 banner, 3 mammoths, and the rest frontline. I'd maybe drop a hybrid and try to make some niche build. 4 archers seems like too much. 4 mammoths is too many, but I don't know if I'm comfortable with only 2. If you want to know what comps are good for specific fights, I can answer that for you. You can also look at what I use in my videos for guidance too :)
