You should do a comprehensive video about grading comics.

I don’t like using social media to sell my books I’ve gotten burnt selling and trying to buy books on Facebook and Instagram it’s just a much bigger headache than eBay!

Finally! This is exactly what I needed! Been struggling to figure out a way to move my books. Thank you gentlemen, this was extremely beneficial👍👍

I just listed 7 items on eBay and thought the timing of this video was a great coincidence. Seeing this video reminded me of how wonderful the IG comic community is and is such a viable option. Great vid, guys!

In 2015 I try to sell my collection. 15 long boxes to my local LCS. I gave they a list of what I had. They were offering me only 1k. Or .25 per book. Thank God I said no. I put them in storage for 3 yrs til I came across your channel and went deep into what I really have. Thank God I didn't sell them for that price.

NEVER EVER attempt to sell comics at your LCS, unless you're begging to be ripped off. I took 2 longboxes of DC and Marvel into 3 comic stores with a friend a few years back. I acted as if I had no idea of the value. They briefly looked through both boxes and offered me $50 a box, but would pay double per because I had each long box filled. So that's $200 total. Then I explained I know there's a few comics in there that are worth around that number alone. These aren't .25 comics. Each guy both played dumb and asked me to pull out anything not considered cheap. So I pulled out 20 comics that were between 50-150 raw each. I said I want 2k for just these alone, and another 2k for the rest. Total value was literally worth 5k. Then things got interesting, lol. They looked each book up and offered me 3000, saying all this nonsense about market shifts, how long these will sit, how they need to make money, and they typhcally pay up to 50% of the current value. I laughed and said no deal. You guys were going to pay me 200 dollars, thinking I'm an idiot. And now you're willing to pay 3000 bc you've realized I know a little bit about what I actually have. If you were honest from the start, maybe we could have worked something out. Point is, your LCS is in the business of making money, not being fair and generous. Do your research on everything u have. Do not take comics to your LCS, unless they are literally worth nothing but space.

Again, I love listening to these guys on these kinds of video. ComicTom is blessed in that he has three core guys and each guy always makes for great videos that stand on their own. A ComicTom with The Golden Age Guru is different from a ComicTom with Fireguy Ryan and a ComicTom with Russ video. The real Fantastic Four in my opinion. Please continue to make these great videos. So true about shipping fees with eBay. It’s killing the moods. I’m living in Canada and I have declined some many an interesting offer from a US seller just because of the exorbitant fees to ship from US to Can. It is usually around 22$ USD (28$ CDN). And we’re not taking about shipping to UK and Europe.

About the ebay part, I learned that it is best to take detailed pics of any flaws that are noticeable. Don't just take a pic of the cover, that way the buyer won't feel like you got one over them because they feel like the quality isn't as good as you said it is.

Whatnot is really taking off too. I have watched a few very successful sales and that’s probably going to be where I sell off my duplicate and non-pc books

Lcs pay 10-30 percent of the value of that. It's the dumbest way to sell a comic book.

Was made to sell my whole 80s collection to a shop when I went off to college (pretty much anything/everything 1980-1991). They gave me ~$220. I long since learned to live with it but vids like these are triggering lol. As for the rest - I quite like Ebay as a buyer when I get a bug to find a particular book but I'm also usually just picking up random issues I want to have again that are definitively in the sub-$50 range. As prices get closer to that max I want lots of photos to make an informed decision and generally am not necessarily looking for an investment copy as much as (at the very least) a nice one I simply want to have. Much more than that level of $$ I would want an in person purchase. I've never bought a slabbed book so maybe that would be an exception.

I am wondering if there are any sellers from Canada who have advice on how to buy/sell books here where it seems to me like most of the options listed in the video are either difficult to come by or cost way more than they do in the US .

I don't sell many comics on E-Bay, but when I do I provide the max number of photos and I assign NO GRADES. I price it based on what I think the grade is, and if you look at the photos and decide it is a fair price for what you see, you will buy it. Then there are no disputes over grading because none was given. Fewer pics for a CGC book and let the CGC grade and reputation speak for itself. Comic Collector Live for the rank and file stuff.

Cool video, but if you have trouble carrying 20 long boxes you better start carrying long boxes and maybe digging, chopping wood and lifting weights lol But seriously, watching this video has help reaffirmed what I thought. Im going to open a small brick and mortar shop in a crap area with low rent in Cleveland lol I don’t want to deal with any Nazi with a gun to my head or shipping. I was selling on Amazon and well packaged mint condition, but I gave up because the buyer gave me a bad rating ASAP. I claim the book was damaged. I have been selling comic books on eBay now for almost 10 years. Of course, as a comic book addict, I am buying on eBay as well. There are definitely a lot of scumbags out there who will lie to you about condition or have no idea how to package and ship a comic book. Packaging and shipping the book is incredibly important because if it does not arrive in the same condition in which the consumer bought it then you got screwed. Overall, I would say my experience has been pretty good and I’ve made some decent money. I did have one buyer, who bought the first appearance of spider Gwen, who tried to pull a fast one on me. It was a raw perfect near mint book and I have been packaging things in a bulletproof manner for years. He complained that when the book arrived the front cover had been bent forward and had a crinkle in it. He did not want to provide me pictures for verification and when he finally did the pictures were pretty inconclusive. Plus the manner in which he claimed it got bent was completely illogical. So I fought him on it and won - after I explained the reasons he was lying and his lack of evidence. It was a pretty big sale. Probably my biggest ever. A little nerve-racking at first but I got through it.

Hey Tom, how come the last uncanny X-Men 266 cgc 9.8 newsstand was never talked about with you or the key collector app? It nearly hit $4700 opposed to its average $1200 direct sales

Are there any other apps/web sites available other than the ones mentioned in the video? I don’t use Facebook or Instagram and eBay is horrible so those options are out.

Shipping is horrific on low value items. It actually makes a lot of books worthless. I get so frustrated when people expect decent packaging and speed yet think you can ship for $1. In the uk 1st class for a flat comic is roughly $2.43 with signature etcetera being extra and packing materials being pretty expensive as well. Throw in a bag and a board and ebay fees and its $5 to brake even even on a $1 book.

Comics are expensive to ship because they contain advertisements, otherwise you could ship book rate. I've sold comics and vintage toys on EBAY. I always claim a slightly lower grade so the buyer gets a better than expected value.

I have NEVER in 50 years of comic collecting seen a LCS that DIDN'T take at lease 40% - 60%

ebay fees should be much lower than paying rent for brick and mortar store!

how do you report your earnings for tax purposes?

It’s all about liquidity end of the day. You bring them average items they will give you a lower margin. If you have mint items and high end course they will give you a higher percentage for those. The facts are most people don’t have that and businesses cannot be sitting on tonnes of illiquid assets. Hence why 40% is more than fair. Otherwise they go out of business and you still keep your 40% money worry free.

I just want to sell one issue, I don't really want to but I need the money right now. What is the best way to do it? It's all I wanna know.

You're right about ebay. I lose a LOT of money on shipping alone and I thought it was just me being stupid.

I’ve sold primarily on eBay with great success. You need just to organize yourself and have system down and supplies ready shipping. but I’m always checking out some the other markets like FB or offer up. When I look on those others I find that people selling are not realistic at all and selling 90’s books. I’ll see average books asking for mint condition prices if not slabbed prices. There eBay qualms where all valid though.

It takes a lot of work to get the best value from your collection. Luckily I am not in this for the quick flip.

I've NEVER gotten a fair price for selling Comics @ LCS, I was offered $10 for AMS 361 first appearance of Carnage BECAUSE it was 2nd Print, I walked out NEVER to go there EVER again!!!

I think it’s fine to sell less important books to an lcs.

How much is the Green Lantern, Vol. 2 #123 released Dec. 1979 (9.6 near mint) goes for just asking.

If you really want to get rid of your low value books, donate a few shortboxes to goodwill or a charity.

I'd neverrrrrrrr sell a collection to an LCS lol. To get what 25%. I rather list stuff to mercari yes mercari not feebay and make way more and put some work in and or the consignment method.

Here's my feedback on the eBay option I wish you would have touched on. Post your comics on eBay and you will get non stop PM's from scammers and phishing crooks making fake offers trying to get at your information. It wasn't worth the time to filter out the garbage from the honestly interested buyers. I'll never sell comics on eBay again. Complete waste of time.

I took great umbrage to The GoldenAgeGuru's portrayal of selling to comic shops felt like he had a serious axe to grind LCS's keep this industry running and the cost of running a store is not BS as he stated. As a long time watcher I feel it was seriously out of line. I have 10s of thousands of books that sit in boxed from collections I bought over the last 7 years to discourage people from coming to their LCS is wrong. Thank you Tom for standing up for the comic shops.

I've been totally ripped off on ebay with little to no repercussions to the seller. They couldn't care less about the buyer. Avoid hot shot comics on ebay. Great video guys!

I think you can do it but it's just somewhat labor and time intensive if you want to max value. Sell in groupings or lots, if not specific keys. Otherwise if you look around enough you can probably find a dealer (not an LCS) that would look at your collection and make an offer. Some definitely want the inventory.

well if you dont wanna get fukked surely dont go to a comicshop or Ebay thats 4 sure. I mean seriously who even goes to comicshops anymore. The few i got 2 i wouldnt even call comicshops because they either practically new of a store in a sense, and/or they sell soo many multiple things. some of my fav places are more like thrifts store and especially since im more into the older stuff i literally have almost no reason to go into the typical comic shop . they fukkin u raw all the way around and not to mention i can almost guarantee they gon charge u tax

NEVER Sell to half priced books, you pay half the cover price of that book when buying one from there. So here it the truth If the cover price is $1.00 on a book, they will sell it for $0.50, therefore, they will buy it from you at half that price. $0.25. no negotiation.

Buy you like buying from them. They're pretty straight up on their policy. You know when you sell to them they're not tripling their money or literally fucking you over saying its worth a $1 and they're going to sell it for $40. Their buying process sucks but they are at least honest about how they're selling it.

Luckily in canada, you don’t need to collect sales tax until you reach 30,000$ in sales, (which could be one comic lol(

I've been selling books on Ebay for over 10 years. As long as you grade accurately (or leave the grading to the prospective buyer), and you package in a way that guarantees the safety of the book(s) through transit, you should do just fine selling comics on Ebay.

Yo what? people get 90% for their comics at an LCS? How? I have never in my life seen a comic store give more than 40%. period.

It truly just kills me when they have a comic book for sale (Buy It Now) for like $3-$4 and then they charge you $7 for the shipping when someone else is shipping from the same area for $2 or free. eBay takes a 15% fee. That's off the final price plus the shipping charge. This doesn't include the actual cost of shipping the comic, which costs actual money to the shipper. Charging $2.86 for shipping is actually losing money... You have to take into account cost of shipping labels, ink, shipping box, bag and board, etc. Those who sell comics for $2 plus $2 shipping actually lose money if they only sell that comic. Those people are hopi g you buy some of their more expensive books in addition.

Shipping non media mail in a Gemini mailers costs anywhere from $3-$6 and that's with ebays percentage off of buying labels through them. Everything costs money.

You guys are really off the mark with LCS numbers here...You're really expecting a LCS to pay 85-90% of value?? Really? That's insane. That would be a horrible business model. No shop does that. And if they do, they won't be a LCS for very long. 50% of a books value is generous when selling to a shop. You might be able to work out a deal closer to 60-70% if it's a hot book that can be sold quickly but that really depends on the shop and the condition/title of your book. For consignment, 60% to the consignee, 40% to the shop is more realistic but 50/50 is really more on the mark.

Love you guys, but WOW, both of you guys miss the mark 🤨 with what you’re telling people about selling books / collections to comic book stores! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Great video! Thank you for the time and effort you poured into this one to help educate me and our community. I sell a little over 1,000 items annually through my eBay store, “Hutch ‘n Such”, including comic books. It’s a small business by definition. Though I’ve never done it, selling to a local comic shop (LCS), while they will likely offer a really low price would have its advantages: [1] LCS does not generally take a percentage like eBay or a consignment shop would. Final value fees are around 13% for “Collectibles” category + a $0.30 transaction fee on eBay. And I’d wager the average consignment shop would want at least 30-40% of the final sale price of anything you bring them. [2] You don’t have to spend 7-15 minutes listing each comic book or “lots” of comic books at a time. [3] No hassling with customer service after you’ve sold something online, e.g. an eBay buyer buys something from you and isn’t happy with their purchase and now you have to spend time communicating and coming up with solutions. [4] No shipping supplies cost to sell to a local comic shop. Just some thoughts I had. Thanks again!

I am starting to sell some of my slabs that I have been holding on to so I now know the struggles and complications behind this. @ComicTom101 and have looked at your auctions to see how other do it. My questions is this...auctions don't guarantee your item will sell for what you want, so why go down that route? As opposed to a straight sale and accepting offers for review.
