    My ladybug supplier recommended spraying the ladybugs with simple syrup (half sugar and water mix) at time of release. This keeps them from flying for a few days and they become habituated to the release area.

    I got a bunch of these cheap flat 2" x 2" plastic dishes that have a little lip on them from the dollar store to dump my pirate beetles and the husks in right next to the stems. They're perfect for releasing and then afterward I just remove them and don't have mounds of unsightly husks on my soil, which makes me worry about mould & bugs hiding in them. -oh btw, I started using pirates bc of you, so thanks! I am surprised you don't ever have scale - the bane of my existence.

    I recently added soil dwelling predators (name started with an S) because I found out from a growliv rep that 30% of the infestation is pupae in the soil😱. I follow a pretty similar regime as you. Though when my thrips population were high, I released orius weekly for 4 or 5 weeks. They reached my rare plants section and I wasn't messing around lol. So far so good but can you just how many times should I spray them with neem oil solution to kill all those larva sitting in my soil from when they were left outside in the summer. Thanks 😊💚

    Hi Alina, thanks for this! Super helpful, as I’m also in Canada (Vancouver) and literally found a new breakout of thrips two days back after I thought I’d cleared them out over the summer. I’ve also been using Safer End-All, but haven’t tried systemics (Canada 😞) and I’ve been wary of using beneficial bugs inside the house because I didn’t know how they worked, or if they would get out all over the house after running out of thrips to munch on. A follow-up question for you: most of my plants are in LECA / semi-hydro. Have you had any experience using the beneficial bugs (pirate beetles specifically) in semi-hydro? Anything to be aware of or would they behave the same way and still work? BTW, thank for the link to the online bug shop, they have free overnight shipping to my location which is fantastic. 👌🏽 Thanks again for the awesome videos - great to see you posting regularly again! 🤘🏽

    The worst bugs are thrips IMO for how long they'll be gone for, only to return 😫 That's a great question... it shouldn't be a problem for mites since you place them on the leaves... and you can place the pirate beetles anywhere and they can fly (prefer to walk) so that also shoooouuuld be okay 🤔 maybe a good question to ask the company prior to ordering to be safe!

  • @keithpugh7538
    @keithpugh75382 жыл бұрын

    I use systemic granules, works awesome and protects plants for 8 weeks, in between that I use insecticidal soap. I would think that a pest that has fed off a protected plant and then eaten by a beneficial would also kill the beneficial insects. Same principle of rat poison killing a snake or owl that has eaten a poisoned rat.

    I never even heard of thrips before, so glad I saw your video so I can tell what it is if they ever show up! So, what about scale? I’ve had scale happen a couple times, ants were farming them in my bay laurel that I summer outdoors and bring in for the winter. I practically had to drown it last time it got scale. It worked, but would rather not be trying to do that when it gets big. Any suggestions?

  • @PlanteriorDecorator

    @PlanteriorDecorator

    Thrips are the worst, it's good that you haven't heard of them and I hope your plants never get them 🤞🏻 but at least now you're prepared if you do! Ooo scale is a great question... I think green lacewings, but I'd suggest contacting the bug sellers first to get their recommendations. Once scale has entered the 'armoured' stage it's a pain to treat.

    Crazy bc I've dealt with aphids outside in my garden on Lillie's, and the bush literally must've sent a 911 out bc lady bugs came and tore the aphids up. Sadly I always kill aphids by hand. I'm thorough I smash them by hand and spray with peppermint soap and water. I am always successful but this year I was about to order lady bugs from Amazon. I mean they hit every single type of lily I had. I was mad as hell. Next I use rubbing alcohol 70% and a small paint brush for spider mites. I dip wipe with the brush rinse and repeat on each leaf side ,stem, and I do the pot. Then rinse after 6 hrs..keep an eye and repeat of necessary. I have had my dahlias, hibiscus, Mandevilla, petunias, begonias all inside since Sept and just found stupid spider mites on my dahlia. Out of nowhere. I checked repeatedly and still I just found the bastards. Ugh so I am doing that this Evening. I'll treat every plant as a precaution. I'm currently going through a Mandevilla issue leaves wilting for no reason 😩.I shall figure it out. I've just gotten grow lights. I'm hoping I get the hang of it bc last year my dahlias lasted but we're leggy. Anyway I liked this video and I subscribed, sorry for the length.lol
