Best train trip I ever did was that route and time - back in 2008! Met great people along the way and the journey sticks in y mind. I must do it again now I have all the time in the world - ish.

Train to Chiang Mai seems awesome, but id rather do the train in the daylight!
I mean you can basically fly from BKK to Chiang Mai for about that much money. I would say if you really want the experience and maybe as a backpacker who wants to save a night of accommodations, it could be a thing 🤷
Definitely need some long pants on the train! She's chilly! Also, maybe some earplugs...the train is very squeaky and noisy..

How's the air circulation on that train? Sometimes I toot while I'm sleeping, am I going to smoke everyone out or just myself?
Were there any stops along the route, or a straight shot to Chiang Mai?
Where would you recommend staying overnight in Bangkok? Sukhumvit Soi 7 ?
