    lol, Onyx is definitely quite the character. Thank you for all the content and your hard work. Seeing another comment, liberty in a field is definitely difficult... Frankly I think being able to just catch your horse without them running away for 30 minutes is a fantastic feat (that was my horse when I first got her. Wanted absolutely nothing to do with people.)

    Been doing groundwork with my almost 8 yo brood mare- this was before I purchased her 3 months ago and she has birthed 3 according to her previous owner. She’s an absolute joy and has a playful personality. Very in tune with me in the round pen. I have only ridden her with a Bosal but she was very defiant- to the point of getting rub marks which I felt awful about. wouldn’t move but no bucking etc. Got a level one snaffle and we will see. I would appreciate any advice. Side note- rode her in a very small round pen bc that’s what was available at the time, she became noncompliant outside of that pen with the Bosal.

    Hi Ryan I’m one of your Patreon members. This was super interesting for me as my horse is an identical personality to Onyx. Just wondering how to respond when he comes to me with this exercise (which is working well) but then wants to say nibble my boots or fiddle around with my stick? Obviously I don’t want to ask for personal space but not sure how to correct the distraction. Also the slight ears pinned while circling at liberty is very familiar. I’d like to know if that’s a negative attitude or just personality? Thanks for all your videos👍

    I've been teaching my horse to ground tie with the voice command "stand" with my hand out in a "stop" sign, and by dropping his lead rope down in front of him with a lot of energy. Then I walk around the round pen and he is supposed to stay where I left him. Is this lesson going to confuse the tar out of him?!

  • @rachealsingell3857

    This youngster reminds me quite a bit of my QH gelding -- everything is a toy and when he's bored with you, he walks off to find something better. Too cute. I do have a question if you have a moment -- when you were getting him to circle around you the second time, at one point he turned to look at you and started to pin his ears. Was this mild aggression or something else? We have a mare that will pin her ears and turn in while either online or at liberty and I've always driven her away when she does this. Is that the wrong approach?

  • @bandersnatch2874

    @bandersnatch2874

    Жыл бұрын

    @Nouveaux she'll turn in, pin her ears, and rock back like she's going to rear. Sometimes she'll push in on you -- usually a well-timed pop with the whip or end of the lead rope will snap her out of it

    @Nouveaux Hmm -- not sure my response got deleted... anyway, yes, she is opinionated and I'm glad she is. I like horses with personality. She's still green in her training, I just wasn't sure if driving her for pinning her ears was the best response or not. I'll keep working with her and keep trying different things. Thanks 😁

    Tried this with my 20 y.o. QH palomino and worked like a charm. My question is should I avoid lunging her in the round pen while starting this? Would it be too confusing for her?

    I'd say you can do both, it's about clear body language / communication. As long as you're clear in what you want, they're more than capable to understand. I ride my horse in classic dressage style as well as western, and she intuitively understands both perfectly.

    Ryan, as a teacher I can tell you that you don’t ask if something makes sense to everyone. Instead you ask someone to explain what they think you mean or you ask for hands of who does not understand. Just a thought that will help you read your audience w clarity.

    Eh I feel like liberty does work in a field.. if the horse wants to leave it means you aren’t being engaging/appealing enough. They know when they need a break. Let them work with you because they want to not because they’re trapped in a pen with you, imo
