The BEST Way to Practice a Musical Instrument: A 4 Step Method

For those interested in Skype (or your favored video chat platform) lessons, email admin@murphymusicacademy.org.
You know how to play your instrument, but do you know HOW to practice it? Do you have a method of tackling the music, or do you just throw notes at it hoping they'll eventually stick? Too often teachers teach their students how to play the instrument, but don't guide them in what they'll be doing between lessons. Here is a 4-step method for intermediate and advanced students that is guaranteed to make the most out of your practice time, and have you practicing with purpose.

Thank you for these videos. I have picked up the violin again after a 40 year break. I was pretty good back in the day. I'm also studying mandolin and loving every minute.

I do love your 4 Step Method ❤ I do always start pieces with the most difficult chunks, which I practice also backwards 🤓💡. When I can do all the chunks I start with the most diffulicult section, so in the end I can do the easiest one. As I am no professional violinist I can do what I like and simply enjoy. Some days I even crash through the piece and have a big laugh about all the catastrophes that happen 😂 I am also ending my practice when I am beginning to force progress to avoid pains from tension. I take a brake and continue maybe later with something less challenging. Thanks a lot and best wishes from Austria ❣️

I really enjoy your videos. You're a fine teacher with a natural ability to communicate clearly about some very complex stuff. What you say here makes perfect sense to me, but could you comment briefly about how to construct a practice session. For example, should one always begin with scales, then etudes, then a focus piece? Should one interrupt the practicing of a focus piece in order to return to scales? Should one devote days to etudes, and others to the focus piece? Any help would be appreciated and I apologize if these questions have already been addressed.

I like this. How would you change or advise for a beginner?

For beginners, the music they play is often so short that there isn't a need to break down things in this manner. I just give them instructions on how to do each section (usually one line of music a time, especially if we are talking something like Suzuki Book 1) as well as how many times to play each one each day, and at which point of the week to start trying to play them all together. For instance, if someone was playing a 3 line song, as many early songs are, I'd instruct them to practice each line individually for the first 2 days, with the goal of playing each line correctly at least twice a day. After a few days of this, they then should try to put lines 1 and 2 together, and then lines 2 and 3. After a couple days of this, they try to play the whole thing together, and then the next day is usually lesson time again, where I can assess how they did.

If your background music in your videos is standard recording or a student taking a lesson, wouldn’t the viewer gain LOTS more info and benefit with NO distracting sounds (kids yelling, traffic sounds, unrelated music etc). That’s a deal breaker when I’m trying to learn techniques and gain insight into learning all about the violin.

The background music is an old performance of myself from school. That being said, I don’t use it in my videos anymore.

Background music is pleasant but annoying and DISTRACTING. Eh?
