Cats can be like humans and be very different in personality. Some cats can be from the start to accept a new cat and some needs more time to accept. It is easier to get a new cat when the cat you already has is used to another cat. My soon to be 8 years old cat that I have used to have a sister but she got driven over when she was 5 years old. 2 years later and I got a kitten. I never did the steps. I lett the kitten in the room with my older cat and let them work it out between them. My older cat did hiss when the kitten got to close and after 2 days my older cat started to clean the kitten and today after almost a year I can find the 2 of them grooming each other, even playing together. I also take my cats with me when I am staying a longer time at my dad's place and he has 1 cat. My dad's cat adopted the kitten instantly. So it is different from cat to cat.

Jackson, you're the best. It works brilliantly! We have two 13-year old, male, Burmese cats who are very attached to us. We unexpectedly feel in love with a 1-year old female Tortie and decided to rescue her. We were very concerned about whether the 3 cats could live together peacefully. So we followed your expert guidance for cat-to-cat introductions and very patiently went through the very slow introduction process. And it worked beautifully. We are thrilled with the results! It's been less than a week since they've been integrated and today our young Tortie girl went over to one of the Burmese boys and licked his head - it melted my heart. Thank you!!

For anyone here in 2020- Here’s my story. I had gotten a beautiful and sweet mixed coat short hair tabby named Phoebe. About 3 years old, very playful, affectionate but alert.. We had her for 3 ish months, she still hadn’t ventured to our bedroom and was weary to explore all there is in our apartment. She came from a shelter with multiple other cats and had also been with other cats in her home before the shelter. She was getting restless at night and we wanted to get her a friend to play with and bring her out of her shell. When we brought Shia home (5 month old white and black kitten), she totally CHANGED. We had never seen her be aggressive or ever once hiss, but all of a sudden she had “the look” and it sure didn’t look like it was coming off any time soon. Any time Shia was around it was a quick hiss, maybe a swat and back under the couch all day. Let me tell you: we did NOT introduce them correctly! We kind of did just drop Shia in the picture hoping our cool cat would stay cool... Well, REINTRODUCTION IS POSSIBLE!!! I watched this video, followed the steps and got them on a meal feeding schedule. Literally it took about 3-4 days of this method and now they are BEST FRIENDS!! They actually beg for each other when separated, run around together all day, kiss on the nose... They are never more than a few feet from each other and Shia has totally brought Phoebe out of her shell- She’ll go anywhere in the house now, climb on things she’s never climbed before... THANK YOU!! They just popped in the room to wrestle and zoom out together while typing this😋❤️❤️

I'm coming back after one week and a half after getting a new cat to say all this stuff works. My resident cat got aggressive, did all the hissing and mumbling thing when we brought the new kitten. We followed Jackson's advices (door, food, ending things on a high note, etc) and day by day we pushed things further as we saw progress (progress = a decrease in the mumbling and hissing) On the 7th day he was tolerating her but would still get bothered if she approched him. BUT! On DAY 8, they started playing, running after each other and at night they were sleeping together. We're on day 12 and they are the best pals! Super proud of them! (Thank you Jackson!)

I am part of The Cat Network in Miami Florida and I have recently found homes for two of my foster babies that had been adopted out and returned for their behavior. One of them hid for a week and they only saw the cat when I dropped her off and picked her up. The second cat had been adopted out and returned twice for attacking her new owners. The three families who tried adopting these two sweet girls failed to listen to me when I said to put them in a small room until they got used to things and instead had access to the entire home from day 1. When they finally found forever homes the families listened to me and within days were normal members of the family and in control of expanding their territories. I am so glad that all they needed were smart owners who listened to my advice and (especially the "aggressive" one) only needed a slower introduction.

Thank you so much for having made this video! I recently got a kitten to keep my cat company for when we go to college in a year. My older cat was originally raised by six dogs and has had no contact with other animals (including the dogs that raised her) in the last three years. She's been the center of attention and I feared that she would not want a new cat and would have to live with separation anxiety when I became a college student. I introduced my older cat and the new kitten incorrectly at first and it did NOT go well. After watching your video and following your instructions, they now act like the sisters I hoped they would become. They sleep by each other, share their food (both were known for food aggression previously), play, and bathe each other. Thank you so much for your outstanding advice!

@@potatocat2445 my two cats get along well enough, but they never bonded in the way that I'd hoped they would. They play together and mostly it's fine and I can tell they're just playing, but occasionally there's still some hissing and growling. They're both Savannah's though and that breed is known for being high energy and a bit more aggressive than your typical domestic. I leave them alone together without worry, they're not that bad, but I do sometimes break them up if it seems one is picking on the other. It's pretty rare that I see them sleeping together cuddled up, but it does happen once in a while!

@@potatocat2445 Oh, and it took a full month of feeding on either side of the door, then eventually I set up a gate system (just some metal shelving with big towels thrown over it) so that I could control how much they saw of each other, slowly lifting the towels higher. I saw that on a video, I don't know where though, sorry. Once they were batting at each other through the bars without hissing I let them interact. But I still kept an eye on them and kept them separate at bedtime for a few days just to make sure.

My brother recently moved back in with his two cats, adding them to our cats to make four in a household. It's a battlezone. (However, one cat recently got out when we had construction men over working on our house, still trying to find her) As it was, the original two cats didn't get along very well. One was an old, overweight cat, and a younger kitten. The kitten always tried to play with the old cat, but would always always get hissed at. Now we have the additional cat (not including the one that got lost) and the two younger cats will go at each other sometime. I think free feeding is the problem, though they tend to just avoid each other otherwise.

worked your program with My 4 month and 5 month adopted Kittens I watched the step by step videos, I even emailed you at one point. And then I made your system my own according to mine and my cats needs. Little bear and Rooster didn't know how much they needed each other. The process took maybe two weeks of dilligent effort on my part. First Roosters environment was in the bathroom. I made it cat friendly. Instead of a screen door, I divided the casita in two by using wire fencing hooked with 16 cup hooks on each side a door frame. I knew it was time for that big step, , where they would be able to see each other and touch each other, only after they were playing touching paws under the bathroom door. The process took patients, almost to my limit. I worked every single step. Little Bear and Rooster now, play together, sleep together, groom each other. I prayed for this outcome so that they can take care of each other and I can expand my life 💫

I checked her litter it was fine, I got worried because it was not her!! took her to the vet and turned out she had a bladder infection or those crystals that cats get and she was trying to tell me that she was sick and in pain glad that I was listening! so yes it is difficult separating fighting cats and I finally found something that worked for me. I got a big dog crate and started reintroducing my cats slowly, keeping each cat inside the crate for a couple of hours while the other one was free to roam around. The growling and paw fights stopped and then I started leaving them together when they eat and for some playtime together. They are getting along well without any issues. Sure, it took sometime and all cats don't act similarly. so what works for me might not work for someone else. Not to mention, the looks and tchtching I got for putting a cat in the crate. I was not being cruel just trying out different things to get them together. And that's what matters!

My cats (Bonnie, female 1yr & Silver, male 4yrs) liked each other in just two days! We've had Silver for quite a few years and got a new cat (Bonnie) in April 2015. We brought Bonnie home & silver would hiss and growl and just generally be upset. Had them in different rooms, but Bonnie would always be at the door meowing loudly to see the other cat...so we let them meet each other Silver would keep growling hissing throughout the day and night, but never hurt the new cat. She would go up to him and flop over trying to play. We had two litter boxes so they wouldn't have any territory issues, but she would only use his. On the third day they started playing with each other and he stopped growling. They've had no problems since that day

He brought her home and our resident kitty who is 3 just will not accept this baby. It's been 6 months and she still hisses and growls. Of course the kitten wants to play so she eill jump and run to the other cat and sometimes it works ok but our 3year old girl doesn't operate the kitten for very long. It's stressful for myself and my husband since we are very attached to both these beautiful girls.

This is a s-l-o-w process but the scent swapping WORKS! Establishing a "base camp" for a cat is also GREAT! I had a feral that was once someone's beloved pet [before they dumped this poor baby at our church]. I also had a friend who originally took this particular cat, introduced it into her large home the "wrong" way and it was a train wreck. She spent over $300 on neutering, shots, vet visits, etc. and then tossed this beauty right back at church--with food and water--for four MONTHS before we had room for another cat and took this beautiful baby in. At first it was saucer eyes and nothing but claws and teeth for ME (I look like I met with a torn bush and lost)--and then after "scent swapping" a few times, the barriers started to come down. The base camp was his "go to" place and really helped out. Swapping locations was a HUGE "YES" and helped immensely. We had to start over again a few times to get the process to work but EVENTUALLY (and with an electronic feeder so the "home" cat couldn't steal food from the newcomer) everything is working out for good. The newcomer quickly adapted to the electronic feeder, the "home" cat cannot eat any food but his own and with a "everything is beautiful" attitude, didn't get aggressive until he was cornered--and no fights, no flying fur, no "screaming" etc. I believe we are well on the way to a fun time for all. The other woman who originally picked up the cat (and spent over $300!) is in "shock and awe" land at the success I've had and I have a beautiful new kitty to go along with my other fabulous and beautiful kitty!

Hi Jackson, I introduced my new kitten to the two older cats I have all wrong. One of the older cats, Jodie, is fine with the new kitten and follows it around. However, Mordecai, the other adult cat is absolutely angry. He hisses at us, the kitten and even Jodie (whom he was previously on great terms with). He also hides in the bedroom and hasn't come out since we got the kitten. I need to know how to fix this. Please and thank you for any advice you can give me.

I kept a door between my cats and after a couple of days, opened a can of tuna and rubbed the kitten with tuna oil. Then I gave my older girl some tuna and brought the baby out while she was eating. They didn't hate each other, a hiss now and then and the kitten arched her back and turned sideways (very cute actually) trying to show how big she was and they got along but everyone knew that the older cat owned the house. I thought that by rubbing tuna oil on the kitten it would make her more attractive. It seemed to work out, I guess I just got lucky. I'll do it Jacksons way next time.

Hey guys, so we've tried almost all these tips when bringing in a new kitten to the household and waited four weeks before they met face to face (kitten in a large cage and res. cat free to approach-our kitten likes his cage and associates it with bedtime at night; so he feels protected). Soon after we allowed the kitten to free roam in a space with our res cat (2y old) and she hissed and growled at him constantly. We would separate them and try again the next day; and the same behavior resumes. It's been almost two weeks of this behavior and our res. cat does not seem to be accepting the kitten yet at all....is there any hope in sight? We will try to go back and start with getting them on the same feeding schedule (or res. cat has a fixed serving size but grazes throughout the day; never finishes her food until at night) but hope re-introducing some of these things will work.

I have a 4 month old kitten that I’ve had since he was 3/4 weeks old because he had no mom🥺 and I brought a 8 week old kitten home recently. My 4 month old, Eli hissed at first but eventually he warmed up and loved the 8 week old, Grayson. Eli loves people and hates being alone but Grayson rather play by himself. Eli always chases and follows Gray but he plays too hard and Gray gets hurt. But gray also follows Eli and tries to play. They’re fine with each other like eating together and whatever it’s just that they play too hard and end up getting hurt. I’m hoping when Gray gets older they’ll idk stop hurting each other.

vampirelovereyes69 I'm going through the same thing. Would u believe me if i told u, that this has been going on for a few years. It doesn't help when the owner of the other cat, doesn't do anything. In fact, i have seen him let his cat attack my cat. My cat was a rescue cat, so i always on the lookout, and as soon as i hear my cat, i go to check it out and either the owner is outside before i get there and i see his cat walking, next thing i see, is my cat coming back from the same direction his cat came from. My cat has already been traumatized when i rescued him, i am trying to do everything i can to move out, unfortunately i can't get around to good and have had a few TIA's. So i am on Disability, and i don't even get the full rate as it is. I don't have family, so it makes it harder to get help, as the owner is a narcissist. If he knew what i was up to, he'd probably kick me out again. He's done it before. That would mean leaving my cat behind. No way in hell am i gonna let that happen. He doesn't think i know what's going on..!! I won't give up, i promised myself and my cat that i won't leave him alone again. (I didn't have a choice before, cause i was kicked out on to the streets). 😢 😢

Unfortunately, my existing kitty and the new kitty both have separation anxiety, so whichever cat was separated from access to me would cry relentlessly. I had to abandon this within the first day. But, I'm fairly lucky - they were both very curious and scoping eachother out under the gap in the door the first evening. I also put a tshirt of mine in my existing cats bed a few nights before I got the new kitty, and I put that shirt in the cat carrier when I picked her up so she'd get my cats scent before she even got home with me. I also took her bed that came with her and swapped it out with the existing cats bed so they could sleep in the other cats bed. It is now Day 2 and there is some hissing when they approach eachother, a little growling from my existing cat, but sometimes they touch noses with no issue. And the three of us are laying on the couch with eachother with them about two feet apart. I'll take it!

I found an obviously once-loved cat in a movie theater parking lot, she has a broken leg that healed wrong, and she is in her senior years. She loves humans to death, but hates cats. We’ve been trying to find her owner with no luck. She’s been staying in my sisters room while she’s in college as her “base camp”. She doesn’t move much, and only stays on the bed. I’ve had to improvise, once she got over the smell of 3 other cats, which was a big shock to her, we waited a while then began to slowly open the door a crack when she is eating on the bed and we feed the other cats on the other side of the door. It’s been 3 weeks since we have found her, and she is now used to cats scent and cats noises. She still is very upset when she sees them, everything is going very slowly. I hope one day she will be able to happily coexist with my other cats, my other cats have been DYING to meet her!

I own one cat. Six others come to my house on a regular basis. They are not mine (and not feral). Just last year had a new cat move in to the neighborhood. Owner's let him out almost when they moved in. Met the cat before the people. The quad he was moved into had kids screaming all the time. He came over to my house and was welcomed by me, my cat, and the other cat from the quad he just moved into. He wasn't aggressive and was quickly accepted. He didn't actually come inside the house until the third day, but he was accepted by the other cats quite quickly.

Our boys are lovely, Snow is super lazy and laid back and Joe is kind, scared of everything and jumps all the time and he growls like a dog at strangers at the door but he wouldn't hurt anyone. 3 months in since new cat came. Nothing was working. Then thanks to Jackson's book and these videos we are not yet buddies but today we got an entire hour of the new cat chilling on the couch and the resident (who is a bully who likes to attack) playing and ignoring the new cat. As soon as the dynamic in the room changed, new cat went back to his room. Trying to end each encounter on a positive note. Since we started this technique it's progressing better and faster with longer periods of time without my cat trying to stalk and chase the new cat. Eat play love for sure.

I found this quite interesting though I have to admit it seems like an awful lot of work that I'm not certain is really necessary. We've had cats my entire life (50 plus now) and the standard cat introduction system was simply putting the latest down in the house and supervising for the first hour or so to make certain nothing untowards happens. Though there's been growling and hissing at times in the beginning, it dies down in a day or so and there's never been attacks or fights. Our latest set includes a 13 year old who was adopted with his brother (now passed) as a ten year old, an eight year old who was adopted as a five year old a week after the 13 year old, and two two year olds who were adopted as kittens.

We did something similar to this. We had the new kitten in 1 bedroom, and the 2 year old male free-roaming the house. We would feed them separate, and bring the kitten out for play times where they were taking turns playing with the same toy. After good behavior with them playing we'd feed them treats, again taking turns. After about 2 weeks of this the older cat sat at the bedroom door and cried until we let the kitten out. They've been best friends ever since.

@Jackson Galaxy Hi there. You have loads of really informative videos, thanks for posting them. We're about to get our first cat. Well, kitten. It's coming up to 8 weeks old, but I've read it's best to wait a little longer. Turns out we can't go pick him up on his 12th week, so would you recommend rehoming at 10-11 weeks or would it be beneficial to wait for the 13th week instead? I read that kittens learn social behaviour up to 12 weeks. But would we be able to work with an 11 week old kitten, or should we just let him get a little older first? thanks

I used this this method with the food, baby gate, and playing with/petting them at the same time, and it literally only took a weekend. Brought the new cat home on Friday afternoon, and by Monday they were two peas in a pod. The new cat licked my OG cat on the face the first time they were face-to-face. Knew it was going to work at that point. They’re a totally bonded pair at this point. I know it’s not like that with most new cats, so maybe I just got lucky.

When I started getting interested in getting a second cat, I told myself that my resident cat needed a "friend". The truth was, I wanted another cat. I was devastated the first day I brought the new cat home. My resident cat resented me and the new edition. I felt selfish for bringing the other cat in and felt the betrayal radiating from my resident cat. But after just a few days the hissing lessened until it completely went away and the two now share a window seat and watch cat TV together. My resident cat has benefited so much more than I have from having a second and I have seen such a positive change in her! She's become more social, more confident, and overall happier. Thank you, Jackson!

@AnoukR omg, thank you for posting that update 😂 I've adopted a 10 month old female from a shelter about 1,5 months ago and am about to adopt a second cat, a 8 month old male (waiting for him to get out of quarantine in the shelter).I do live in a smaller apartment so things might be tricky, but I'll follow the rules here and hope for the best. I'll post an update....hopefully a beautiful one

"It's on cat time, not human time" Thanks for that, I'm on day 3 and remembering this quote when I'm feeling frustrated and impatient.

This seems to be working with my two cats that started suddenly fighting. It's taken 1.5 months, but they are clearly improving, to the point that they can eat together before being separated. Be patient, be consistent. It will work.

Akerfeldtfan what was your experience like? I have a 3yo cat and got a new kitten last Wednesday. Initially kept them together but after the attacks of the older one on the kitten I split them up. They eat on each side of the door fine, but this morning my cat sneaked into thr bedroom as I was going in and attacked the young one again. No big harm done, they both ate again at the door afterwards as if nothing had happened.

I got a new cat in late April. My ragdoll was SOO lonely and sad. I couldn't leave the apartment for more than 6 hours without him being really sad for hours upon my return. I decided to try to get another cat and see if it got better. (had a two month return clause in the contract for the new cat if worse came to worse). The new cat was already 1.5 years old, and my ragdoll about 1 year. I knew about all your tips and was prepared to follow them through however, the cats were not interested in following the plan. Not only was the feeding ritual not possible (the new cat was used to free-feeding of dry-food) but both cats were soooo curious about eachother. For the first day the new cat got to stay in the kitchen. Both cats hung arund the door being so curious! Then she got the 2nd night in most of the apartment with me and the first cat in my bedroom. Every time I went through the door that separated them they tried to sneek past and get to the new cat. But there was no agression what so ever. After having had them separated for 2 days and barely being able to move around the apartment I decided to let them meet. They went right up to eachother and smelled eachother and that was pretty much it. My first cat was like ' Hey! There's a buddy for me! We're gonna be ffs and love eachother foreeeeever!'. New kitty was like ' Whatever, just don't go sniffing my but or I'll hiss at you and threaten to punch you'. Of course they had to adapt to eachothers personalities, but as they weren't mean to eachoter I saw no reason to keep them separated. For the first couple of weeks theye were not allowed to be alone together, but they made progress every day. I cried when they slept next to eachother at 3 weeks in. I still think they are adjusting to eachoter, I pretty much think 6-12 months is a valid time span for them to really become good friends, but they are getting there! I'm glad I did things the way I did. If it didn't work out I would have backed off and followed your guidlines more, but my kitties didn't want to stick to that plan :p I can also say that the ragdoll is much happier than he was before! Less dependent on me, but he plays more and he doesn't fall apart into a whining sad fluff of fur when I leave for a while

TY TY TY For your post! I am thinking today I'll get a new buddy for my 6 yr old tiger kitty. Reading thru your post I had forgotten that 4 yrs I have moved back here from out of state. I temporarily moved in a friend who had 2 cats. I had kept mine with me in the bedroom I was using. Well, my cat WANTED to meet hers, and hers mine. At first there was some hissing (LOL from my cat, the VISITOR!) but, the other 2 cats were fine with it. With in a week the 3 of them were playing and having a GRAND time. When I moved 3 weeks later, one of her cats went around crying and crying for mine. It really shook him up. It did her also, but not to such an extent.

When I got my 2 year old female and introduced her to my 15 year old male, I let them sniff through a closed door. Then I went out of the room but forgot to close the door, 10 minutes later both were sleeping on bed together 😅
