Thanks for this! Turns out I was converting all my music at 128kbps and I didn't know why and this vid helped a lot!

Audacity uses the Lame encoder as well, I remember from some years ago that you had to download separately as it wasn’t included because of the mp3 patents (who should have expired some years ago). About 20-15 years ago I used the ogg vorbis format which was fine with Winamp, but many hardware players at the time didn’t support it.

Woody, I did all that...! My toaster sprang into life immediately and produced 28 slices of evenly smoked and smoking fried bread.., my goldfish did backward summersaults across the lawn while the cat sat down and played cards with the dog from next door. Just a portion of what normally happens when my software gets anywhere near me. The hoops one has to jump and words that require a dictionary just to get to the next page, let alone the next chapter. I’m softwared out... i’m a customer not a tech scientist. The only thing that put me off reel to reel tape machines was the ‘demagnetizing’ bit. Otherwise I would just get the sounds and multi-track., still. I long for the days one just plugged gear into the wall and everything blew up. At least I knew where I was. LAME is a fantastic encoder that has been finely tuned over a couple of decades; it's amazing that a nearly 30 year old compression technology is still relevant today. You can also create a batch file that you can drag and drop a file onto to encode it. If I remember correctly, you can use %1 in a batch file to reference the file you dropped onto it. So you could use lame -b320 %1 %1.mp3, although this would give a weird output filename (you can strip the original extension with some trickery but I won't go into that here).

True, there's no need to install some sophisticated conversion tool. I personally go for latest lame.exe to rarewares org, and use lame.exe --preset extreme (I believe the authors of presets know what they're doing). And if LAME can't process input file on its own, then there's always ffmpeg.exe -i input output.wav as temporary step (ffmpeg org). ..and then it's time to run free mp3tag and precisely tag everything. :-)

Great and concise video Woody 👍 I've been using for all my sound processing and editing tasks the MAGIX Sound Forge Pro (former SONY Sound Forge Pro) since version 9 or 10. A fantastic pro sound editor IMO. But regardless of the soft used for the conversions, if going for mp3, always convert to the possible highest quality of 320k mp3, for me anything less is just sub-standard.

Reaper uses the LAME encoder for mp3s directly 🙂 I don't know if it ships with the encoder now since I installed the LAME encoder long ago when it came without it. That way I can export my project directly to mp3 from Reaper.

@@WoodyPianoShack The latest release might ship with it because the patent has expired now, but I may be wrong. What's surprising is that LAME hasn't even been updated in ages.

You can use the Freeware Mediahuman Auduo Converter where you can Batch convert any format. Im using their paid Tube downloader for KZread videos and i cant live without anymore

I'll add to the list, although I don't have it much thought, for me its 48k 16-bit which is good for video or streaming since most of my stuff gets uploaded rather than burned to CD. All the other advanced settings, I just leave on default, can't hear any difference... :D

@Darren: Depends on what you want to achieve. Are you searching for the smallest file size with the best quality, or just the best quality period? The best quality with compression is arguably flac. This is a lossless compression, as opposed a lossy compression for mp3. (Lossy means reduction of quality, but the average human ear can't tell the difference.) With lame I would suggest you take a look at the --preset switch: medium, standard, extreme or insane. Usage: lame --preset standard sample.wav sample.mp3 (Note there are two dashes in front of preset.) @Woody: IF burning to CD, use 44.1k, instead of 48k!

@@devans83 most streaming audio websites like SoundCloud add their own compression and volume analysis when you upload to them anyway. It's best to upload .wav files, which on modern broadband doesn't take long, because they're going to get automatically converted,or reconverted. Every time audio is re-encoded it loses more data and fidelity. So to maximize quality of an upload, don't compress it at all, you're at the mercy of the website you're using.

I was using Goldwave to convert Wave to MP3 but something went wrong and it cant save MP3 files so I just use an android app.

I actually ripped my whole collection of CD's like 10-15 years ago. Did only go for 192 Kbps though wich I regret today. As a bonus I scanned all the covers and inluded in the mp3's too. That can be done in a program called mp3tag (and also name the mp3's correctly aswell). Still using Winamp to play mp3's, kinda nerdy. What is the best player these days?

@@WoodyPianoShack Hi! Then what version am I supposed to have. My system downloads it as a gz file too with 12 folders and 31 files (?) all with names I know nothing about and no "exe". I don't see any support and want to enter my song in a contest so I have to convert it from its WAV file to MP3. Seems like responses are months later. You mention "Linux" version like maybe it's the wrong version? If so how do I download the right version. Every time I click to download it now gives me no choice as to which type of file or version. I have a PC with Windows. What should I do?

Anyone else trying to do this on mac? I can't get this to work at all 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I still prefer the original Fraunhofer encoder. At 256 kbps.

dbPoweramp is much easier and more convinient imo

Why not just use audacity and add mp3 tags whilst your at it? 🤔 Seems an old fashioned way to do it in 2022.

installing audacity just to convert a wav? audacity is great but it's a bit much. and it uses lame itself in the background... just get lame unless you need an audio editor but that's not what this vid is about! :)
