When my mom bought a house in 2006 i found a Victorinox Huntsman in a drawer of the old kitchen table. I was 6 years old and grew up using that knife in every scenario you could think of and I never had any issues with it. By now I have 3 different knifes for every occasion, a small one, my huntsman and a bigger Hunter XT. Just a week ago I sent my first one to the Victorinox HQ for some maintenance and new scales. Also just found out it is at least 33 years old since they discontinued the exact model in 1991, so the knife is at least 9 years older than me. These are hands down the best knifes anybody could ever want. I get that some people might want a Leatherman Tool or something similar as backup but for everyday carry you absolutely don´t need anything more than a plain old and simple Victorinox.

I been working in the trades my whole life. I've used a million multi tools. My favorite is the victorinox farmer or hiker combined with the 5-inch knipex cobra pliers. I have a ton of leathermans and they are great, but I feel like when I need a pair of pliers, I need a legit pair of pliers especially when turning bolts or to get a decent amount of leverage on something to bend or pull. I use the victorinox mostly for the flathead and phillips screwdrivers, saw and awl. Usually for poking or prying or to tighten or loosen a screw or the saw works great on wood, PVC, Hard rubber, ect. I have used the other tools on the victorinox farmer or hiker on occasion. The blades come in handy if I happen to forget my main pocket knife. I carry both tools in a leather slip that fit beautifully in my back pocket. To me it's been the ultimate multi tool combo and it's lighter and flatter in the pocket than most leathermans.

The Victorinox SwissChamp is my all time favorite Swiss Army knife - mostly due to the nostalgia factor - my uncle brought back a Swiss Army knife when he visited the factory more than 45 years ago - I really don't recall which model or if it was a Wenger or Victorinox but the width of the tool and approximate number of implements felt very close to the Swiss Champ - that knife was "borrowed" from me by an acquaintance and I never saw it again. As and adult I own two and several other models - in all honesty I use the Tinkerer the most often out of my Swiss Army knifes - there's probably about a half dozen in various rooms in the house and in my vehicles...

I am enjoying your videos comparing pocket knives and multi-tools. I generally carry SAKs with one or two layers for a few select functions and comfortable carry in a pocket. I am considering the added functions of a multi-tool but I am not sure how often I may need needle nose pliers and also being saddled with the added bulk. The locking blade and tools with the optional bits for the Roxon and value of the Mossy Oak products intrigues me. Thanks for shedding a light on the available quality options and help steer me clear of the pretenders.

Great video--I've never seen anything on Victorinox quite like your "competition." However, I've never understood the obsession with scissors. I can't recall ever using them in the decades I've been carrying SAKs. If you keep one of your blades, like the secondary, extremely sharp it can do anything that scissors can (except maybe trimming your nails), including cutting paper, plus a whole lot more. But even the tiny pliers on some SAKs can pull, push, twist and crush. Those are essential handwork applications that you can't do with any other tool. And the large scissors on the Roxon KS2E could instead have been an even more substantial miniature pliers.

Great video! I'm looking forward to what Roxon will put out in the next few years. They really seem to be putting in the effort to compete with Victorinox. As it happens, I got my latest Victorinox in the mail today. I did some research on the SAK Wiki, and found a discontinued but new Explorer Plus on eBay. It cost me more than a Roxon at $65, but I know I'll be carrying this for years. The Explorer Plus is the current Explorer model with Plus scales. Those are the scales on the Compact, and so they have the pin, pen, tweezers and toothpick all in the scales. Since it's an explorer, it has the inline Philips driver. You also get the corkscrew with the micro driver, and the larger Victorinox scissors. It's more weight in my pocket than my old Tinker, but it sure looks like an upgrade for the weight. I know enthusiasts aren't the biggest market for Victorinox, but I sure do wish they would make a line for us with G10 and upgraded steel. Even 14C28N would go a long way towards making the knife geek market happy. I have long thought of the 58 mm small knives they make as "minimum viable knives". The Classic SD in particular feels like the minimum you can throw in a pocket or purse to get the benefits of having scissors and a knife on you at all times.

That was a great comparison of different brands. My very first Victorinox was the champ back in 1982 when I did my first camping, traveling trip from Canada through the USA down to the bottom of Mexico and back. I don't know whatever happened to that but the memory stayed with me over the years and a few years ago I decided to buy another champ. And then the addiction started. I have recovered now and I'm doing better. I keep Leatherman surge and the Swiss Army champ in my bag at all times. Those two tools give me a pretty decent range. It makes you appreciate how much precision they put into making these knives when you see the competition. The knife I bought in 1982 is exactly the same as it is today. Except I think I didn't have a little pin in there back then.

the nextool E1 looks great. i love the bit driver and that it's compatible with the leatherman set. just ordered mine and can't wait to test it out. it's similar to your top pick but more modular. for DIYers, similar to the key bar concept of keys and tools in one package, i got the 1/2 leatherman wave clone and put the driver on the locking side and replaced the other tools with the 3 keys i need. so in the end i have a decent blade, and saw on the sides that lock, and a locking bit driver with flat and philips. i've carried it for a few years now daily and love it. you need to be handy to chop the keys down to nothing but the actual part that goes in the lock and drill holes.

Great video! You have got to get yourself a Fox Vulpis! It's excellent quality with great blade steel choices (M390 or N690). These remind me of the Victorinox Small Tinker (81mm, I think) but are closer in size to the 74mm Executive. They need to expand this product line to a larger format and more tools, but for those who like the small format (I do), my only gripes are the spring tension needs to be a bit higher, and I want a Phillips driver (3D, I hate 2D Phillips).

I really like the Roxon M3. It’s smaller and cheaper than the ones you highlighted. It does not have the high end steel, but I’ve got many other blades. This one has tweezers, a really better toothpick (pointier than the Swiss army), and a hidden Phillips and flat head eye glass screw driver. Its main tool is another excellent scissor (folding from the middle) and it has a little blade, bottle/can opener/box cutter, Philips, and awl. Everything locks. And it’s $20. This one sits in my center console in my car. I’ve got a multitool and single use tools in my garage, car, and house for real jobs.

I've always found SAKs lacking; punch dagger Phillips, corkscrews and non-locking implements (twisting something without a lock is sub-optimal) and the blade being thin and good for slicing but not much else. And getting the implements out is a pain. The T4 might be expensive but everything works, everything locks, everything acts like it should (Phillips screwdrivers that actually drive) , opening, even one-handed, is easy (if you're struggling with the blade, instead of dismantling it and taking out a spring, just run a needle file over the pivot face to round it out, don't even have to take it apart) and the blade can slice, carve, gouge, anything you need. Oh and a pocket clip so it's not rattling around and I always know which orientation it's coming out. I'm not a leatherman fanboi, the shit they pack into the rest of their range is like SAK's offerings, either "who is this for?" or random "let's put a precision screwdriver in a massive pair of pliers, to utterly waste space". The T4 happens to have everything I need, in a safe and usable way, as an EDC for everywhere.

I totally agree with the KS2 Elite. I ordered one a month ago and it immediatly replaced my Victorinox i had for over 20 years. It is just really nice that every tool locks. By the way I am in Austria and it is totally fine for blades to be one-hand and locking here, so it is not illegal in the entire EU like you said. My favorite Victorinox would be the Swiss Champ if size is not an issue and the Manager because it even fits in a wallet and still has a great toolset for me.

I really do like victorinox knives and like them a lot. But having locking implements on the ROXON KS2 just makes so much superior and at the same price point is really nice. My problem with some of the Victorinox models is that they get to be to thick while the ROXON KS2 is the same thickness as my Victorinox Camper while still being slightly shorter and having a pocket clip. I really like the ROXON KS2 and will stay with me. I will still carry SAKs because they are just so good. My favorite is the Camper just because that was the one I was given, but think the Compact or the Super Tinker is the best.

That Ruike S31 is as close to a Vic's 84mm as it is to 58mm. So when comparing blade sizes, you could look to the 84mm blade just as easily. They are only 1mm different, and the 84mm blade is much larger and sturdier than the 58mm blade overall. Unfortunately, Victorinox hasnt offered scissors on the 84mm size for many years, claiming a broken machine. If scissors arent an issue, then an 84mm can be a great alternative to the larger 91mm. They are surprisingly more pocketable than the 91mm with little loss in tool functionality.

Hello Sir, your questions are very simple to answer😁 nothing beats a real Vic since they bought Wenger. My favorites are 3 different ones for 3 different options: one for the key ring (ClassicSD) , one for my pocket (huntsman) and one for my edc bag (Ranger Grip/Wood 55, have both). If I have to choose between them, I would take the RangerGrip55 (Ex-Wenger) because of that big locking blade and the biggest saw you can find on a pocket folding knife. It’s not a silky, but hey… find another saw that works so great in this size and also carrying other tools with it. This knife sits perfekt in my hand, I can work hours and hours with it without having any problems. And here it comes to the issues I see with all the other ones you have shown . They all have harsh corners, I don‘t want to work longer than 5 minutes with them. The only knife i accept in my pocket besides a Vic is an Opinel with self made handle😊 yes I am a person, who likes wooden self made things😁greetings from Mercedes Benz town Stuttgart in south west Germany 🤗Judy

Great vid! I've carried a Mini Champ and now Rambler for over 40 years. It's a family meme that I have to have it in my pocket. My one complaint is the poor steel for the blade. It dulls way too fast and sharpening wittles it away to nothing. I would pay double to triple if V would do a magna or S90V type blade.

instead of the Victorinox Super Tinker, try the DeLuxe Tinker, which has a plier instead of a saw. Also in my pocket most every day, is the humble Stanley 10-049 folding utility knife - slim, lightweight, rustproof, the very sharp blade locks and is replaceable.

  • @LarryGarfieldCrell

I can't seem to find it now, but I believe one of the Roxons comes with a removable craft blade instead of a full blade. That's huge, because it's under the 2.5" length limit in some cities, easily replaced, and means you can just toss the blade and take the rest I to many places you cannot take a knife. (Airport, courthouse, many office buildings, etc.) That's a feature no Victorinox has. It pains me that 91mm Vics are not street legal in Chicago and some other cities. Now if Vic took something like the Compact and replaced the blade with a good craft blade? Now we're talking! Especially if you throw in a third layer for an inline Philips, magnifier or, one of the other less common tools. Lots of cirections you could go there, but you'd still have a rock solid base to build from.

yeah man, the KS2E is such an incredible value. Roxon is cooking so hard rn, I can't wait to see what they'll continue to do. about the measurement markings: I really appreciate having them on my tools, even if they're as small as this. as a lifelong user of freedom units I find it hard to visualize centimeters, and it's helpful if I need to take a picture with a size reference. also, favorite Vic is the Classic SD because I've had them since I was a kid, but I think once I finally get ahold of a Jetsetter or Minichamp, that'll probably change. I do have an old Swisschamp that belonged to my grandpa, it's still perfectly usable but it's one of my most valuable possessions so I can't risk carrying and losing it 😂

Great review. I think that when you look at the smaller multi tools (that really fits in your small jeans pocket) you have to address the toothpick and the twizzers, it’s so overlooked that I don’t get it. I’m using the toothpick pretty much on a daily basis (I have a few), every time after I eat and before I meet clients, I’m checking my teeth. The tweezers are also super useful and it’s annoying me and that all the other companies are simply ignoring it (accept maybe for Roxon that has both on some of their tools).

Ok got back from work and watched the video from front to end. So the issue with the KS2E and I bought it (and returned it) is that it felt like every tool on there locked differently. Some had the pivots that would lock it but others would lock in some other way. I recall there being 3 different ways to lock some of the tools and that got confusing. They should have just made it one lock that worked on any given tool that needed a lock.

  • @paulx2777
    @paulx277725 күн бұрын

I like locking tools, and especially the ease of their deployment, which is not available in non-locking tools like Victorinox, So you need really strong thumbnails to deploy them against the strong springs, which gives the impression my nail is going to break, trying to get them out. So I might well look at the alternatives you describe. I do have one of the tiniest Victorinox tools on my keychain and get good use from it, no real complaints there other than that my tweezers and toothpick are long gone.

I wonder if the weird serrated blade is there as a strap/clothing cutter. Angle makes sense for it, plus the glass breaker. I like the armbar. The driver with standard bits, and some versions have the hammer on the end. Scissors suck though, which is weird because they aren't bad on the Suspension. I still have my ancient Swiss Champ. Bought a 1 hand trekker, have a mini champ on my keys.

I carry a knife with a locking blade clipped into my right pocket and a Victorinox Explorer on a keychain clip clipped into my left pocket. The keychain clip keeps the Explorer from diving to the bottom of my pocket with my keys and other miscellaneous hardware. I like the Explorer’s Phillips screwdriver and the magnifying glass which I use surprisingly often. Mine is also equipped with the mini screwdriver that fits into the corkscrew. The most used tool on my Explorer is the scissors. I also carry a pair of Crescent 4 1/2” mini pliers in a soft pouch.

Was happy with my Roxon older generation knife until yesterday when I had to try and get a dog ball out of my drain. I opened the knife and started picking and prying on the ball to try and get it out. Well the locking mechanism for the blade would not stay locked and the blade kept folding in. Now I know that’s not what the knife is designed for, but the locking mechanism shouldn’t fail during such a simple task. I will say, I still like having the bigger scissors

I think that the Victorinox Explorer is excellent, but I would love to have a Yeoman (discontinued and hard to find for a reasonable price). I have an older Wenger Swiss Sportsman, which is great, too! I dislike the handle shape, but it is hard to beat the tool, set on the Delemont S557 series. That locking blade, the wrench, in-line Phillips, and small slip joint pliers (a bit less robust than Victorinox style pliers on, say, a Deluxe Tinker but more useful)...I'd love to see that in a standard 91mm frame!

Favorite Victorinox on my wishlist is the farmer X. I have been carrying the Roxon KS2E for a couple months . Over all I find it comfortable to use . The blade is OK. But the scissors are the star of the show . I used the all on some wood and bent the tip. And the can opener bottle opener thingy is cheap and wish the would have just put a large flat (pry) instead. The driver is pretty good too. The saw is so short but pretty sharp. Overall I like it bit could do without that one tool. I have the Victorinox camper which I love the saw . And when I said I think the roxon is comfortable and then I use the Victorinox I feel like the swiss knife is so much more comfortable. But camper doesn't ha e the scissors. It is a choice for sure . I still have my Rambler on my keys and my 1998 wave on my hip . Just incase the roxon fails me . Haha

Roxon and Ruike look like good tools, and I'd not heard of either before, ta. Will they get me away from my Swiss Champ? Sadly not. Over 35 years of familiarity with the same knife - so pre-mini-pliers. I've been inching closer to getting a new Champ and retiring my venerable old one. And yes, being in the UK does factor, although my personal experience with the police has been fine - even when stop-and-searched at a demo. And at the Palace of Westminster, home of our politicians - well, I can't carry it in, but they have a system for holding and returning items, no problem.
