i had a job way back that had me grinding the crankshafts of CN trains here in canada. The only thing i remember is they were 8 cylinder shafts, that were split in 2 pcs. I think they would come in at a million KM's and we would test them to make sure they had no cracks. We would grind them round, test again, chrome them (or some kinda electrolysis plating they told me was chrome), grind back to round and if they pass, ship them back out. The machine I used was an old WW1 or 2, unit that sat for 50ish years before I got to use it. sadly i screwed up that sweet job with my personal life.

Since the DE6 has had its electricals revised to be more durable, you absolutely need to check the DE2 next and do experiments. If there's consistency there, AltFuture did the epic thing. **54 minutes into the video** Hey remember that part where you said to play polka with your train? Yeah about that...

Some notes on the "Little Dute" 1. It cannot exceed 35-40 on its own power. 2. It will break if you get it going over 50-60. 3. It is great for shunting. It accelerates slowly, but has a really good compressor so you will have no problem stopping and starting. 4. It is great for splitting multiple jobs hauled by one train without having to divert course and shunt hundreds of extra tons. 5. It is NOT good for hauling things between stations. You will NEVER make time bonus and you will continually slow down because voltage decreases with battery power, meaning you get slower the longer you run it. It also has no grip, so even an 0.7 grade will cause make it stop with a 200 ton train.

  • @bavarianbanshee

    @bavarianbanshee

I refute point 5. I've been doing way too much hauling between stations with it, and as long as you manage your time well, you can absolutely still make bonus time with it.

I was playing DV when this released. I was planing on getting water and coal for my 0-6-0 while at the Steel Mill but I passed the switch. Right as I passed the switch I realized that I had no water in the glass and Cthulhu’ed blocking the switch with an 8-Car train. The BE-2 would have been very useful in that situation but instead I had to derail a DE-2 and rerail it in front of 0-6-0.

Speaking of transition, Zeibach clarified that the DE6 is set to use the same electrical sequence as the SD18 (closest non-export model) which has one transition from 2 groups of 3 motors in series to 3 groups of 2 motors in series, then as speed increases has two steps of field shunting. Field shunting doesn’t kill the amps totally, but you can notice a sudden increase in amps due to field shunting reducing the back EMF (less voltage = more current). The -2s dropped field shunting entirely but some other old locomotives used a lot of steps of field shunting to fine tune the volt-amp curve to within the (really crappy) generator limits. Something like the SD24 tries to squeeze out so much power of its relatively small generator that it has two steps of transition, each of which has up to 6 field shunts…yeah maybe they should have invented a bigger generator for that thing.

Tram driver here, so... much smaller vehicles. On a 4 motor tram, the motors start as 2 motors in series (2 groups of), then steps into parallel, where all motors are parallel to eachother. We had a couple of experimental cars that had weakfield notches after that, but they were never rolled out past the prototypes.

I think the BE-2’s best use case is probably hauling dead power into roundhouses for manual servicing. But I also found it useful for doing quick switching jobs at the machine factory military base because I could summon it and didn’t have to run over to the roundhouse to get a locomotive. I could also see it being useful if you’re pulling a very heavy train over a hill and it’s just starting to bog down and you need just a tiny little bit more power.

I can't speak directly about how train traction motors are setup, I can speak to motors in general: Motors have remarkable starting torque, but that is a result of the very significant starting current. Running them in series dramatically reduces the chance of overcurrent when starting. While it technically reduces torque, it is torque that actually useful since you aren't popping breakers or overheating the motor nearly as easily. It is often used for starting very large motors in the industrial world. (Everything from elevators, chillers, rock crushers, even sometimes conveyor belts) VFDs are starting to remove the need for it though.

But this update has improved things so much it's almost perfectly fluid now. I can now recommend it! Absolutely worth the asking price and there's enough there that it can be considered a "finished" game. So glad they continue to develop for it, every update is welcome and exciting!

The little doot reminds me in its setup of a Crown-manufactured zero-turn forklift. It's used in tight spaces so you need to look everywhere to not hit anything, and trust me, it's much easier to stand sideways at the controls than to have to crane your neck to see behind you. Also the DE6 sounds just like the diesel locomotives I've listened to while waiting at grade crossings :) PS. I watched most of this on my breaks from work and break ended at 52:46 - with Kenosha winding up behind a nice chat about diesels - I had to wait until I got home for the bang!! Thanks for the fun!

29:30 one of the gas compressors we have at a nearby location is driven by a natural gas powered CAT 3612 engine. Near 5000 hp and near 31,000 lb-ft of torque. Its two turbos, one for each bank, had to be replaced about a year and a half ago to the tune of about $114k for both the turbos, not counting the labor for removal of old and installation of new. Not quite the same as what you are talking about, but in a similar cost range.

So you can get the same effect of the engine bogging in a locomotive in your own car, the alternator in older cars are not as powerful as newer ones so in something like a 1970s Ford with electric fans when you turn them on it loads the alternator causing more resistance to turn it and bogging the engine. Older cars like you're describing have generators, not alternators. The difference being an alternator has electromagnets instead of permanent ones. On cars with generators if the battery is low the lights will dim slightly when you come to a stop because it can't compensate for the lower idle speeds like an alternator can.

0:00 - It's an ASF (Akkuschleppfahrzeug) used e.g. for moving equipment in shops, where there's really not much space to spare. There's one painted in the high speed train ICE paint scheme used in an ICE workshop. 18:10 - Since you're playing in Europe here, technically, you didn't end too early and you certainly didn't whistle [yeah I know, it's a horn, but operationally it serves as a whistle] too little, quite the opposite =P We rarely ever whistle for crossings (most are secured by lights or barriers; those that aren't, are often secured by oversight). Well, DV is set in a fictional post-yugoslavic country setting, I think there's more non-technically secured crossings with whistling there from what I know, but still. Usually you do one or rarely two 'toots' of some two to four seconds. 24:25 - Soooo. Was the Kenosha for the handcar - or for not having the license? xD 36:10 - Wow that's a whacky setup. Why would one consider this a good idea? It's not like you save a ton of stuff by not having an electric motor on the compressor in a locomotive that is full of electric motors anyways ^^' 48:20 - That would have been the PERFECT moment to find out they had modelled breaking couplers, if they had =P 53:40 - Oh do you mean there's a reason why speed limits are valid for the whole train and not just the loco? 🤔😂 56:20 - I don't drive anything with commutator motors, never have (well, in training, but not under my own responsibility), so that bit of knowledge went a bit lost for me; but over here there's a certain amount of seconds how long you're allowed to have power applied without moving, or to put it in other words, you need to get moving within X seconds (I just forgot the exact number). Reason being you risk un-soldering the individual commutator segments. I'll presume there's an anologue rule on your railways, too? 58:30 - "Not sure how we did that" well - effectively, I'd say. =P 59:35 - Aaaaaand handbrake in the middle. 🥴

Is there a way to throw the little thing in a “neutral” per say and drag it along with your train without blowing it up? It’d be nice to have a switcher to-go.

The BE-2 reminds me of the grain elevator near to where I grew up. They had a "tracknobile" (I believe that was the brand) that was set similar running on the rails. But, it also had a set of truck axles that were offset 90 degrees from the rail. Detroit powered, I assume hydraulically driven??

your parralel/series traction motor stuff, you probably meant Delta and Star. Delta puts max voltage over a 3 phase Motors Coils whilst Star puts them kinda in series, dropping the voltage per coil and thus limiting current

So you can over rev traction motors now? I think I might have done that already because I was pulling the micro shunter above 50 km/h and I saw an electrical explosion come from that shunter. Thankfully I brought it to a locomotive workshop to get it fixed. I will have to watch my speed when pulling or using it.

Have you considered SimRail? I know its not your cup of tea, but the electric engines are great to operate (and the sounds!). And have you ever been in Wolsztyn (Poland). Biggest operating steam engine house in Europe. Some locomotives drive from time to time to this day. They also have Pm-36 2 locomotive (Beautiful Helena) which indeed is a beauty.
