This is actually a type of folding knife from the medieval period. I have a replica that has a medieval gothic style brass handle. Most small blades from the medieval period were meant for cutlery. Some people would carry entire sets of blades for food.

I think it's important to remember that "carry" used to mean "strap it to your horse's saddle". You can say medieval knights would carry 3 swords, a rondel dagger, a spear, a mace and a jousting lance, but really he just carried the dagger and one of the larger weapons. It's the horse that was carrying it.

@@VonDilling People back then used pouches and belts to hold items on their person. Sometimes multiple belts. One for holding a sword, that can support the weight. And then a smaller purse like pouch that would carry small items or a dagger. Horses were a big help, but not everyone in the 14th to 16th century did battle. Or carried a ton of stuff. Mostly just essentials. Which were commonly cutlery kits and tools.

After about a decade of wanting one of these knives I finally got my hands on one. It's not because I couldn't afford it, it was because I couldn't remember what the name of the knife was. So one day I was talking to a buddy who knew a lot about knives and I tried to explain this knife to him and then I ended up drawing one half open and he instantly knew the name. That's how I figured out how to buy it!

It's been my experience with them that it's hit or miss on the finish. Some come super smooth and razor sharp, others are . . . Rough. But it's relatively easy to fix them up. Sand the scales, and apply some boiled linseed oil. Sharpen the blade, and I typically install a plastic spacer on the bottom screw so you can tighten it down and still close the knife fully. The last one I did took me about 15-29 minutes and less than $1 in materials!

The Opinel #8 is the ultimate small slicing knife for EDC "if" you value traditional simplicity and comfort in an inexpensive package. The steel (high carbon or stainless, I have both) is good enough and easy to sharpen and will last forever with some care. I have one thats at least 30 years old. The Svord is just a lot more fun. The tang does stick out in a bad way sometimes and it has opened in my pocket but its fine otherwise. My only real complaint is that the scales float on the screws and can move around and pinch your palm when gripping tightly. A small spacer fixes this but... TLDR; both are good cheap fun.

What Timex model is that? I need some videos on your watches and pens please... I also would love to see your basic billfold set up... Everyone I know started going to the really minimalist bill folds and I went opposite to one that is designed to carry a small field notes notebook and a pen and it's been a game changer for me, I absolutely love it. That watch and band I have to know about.

where are yot Not allowed to have a lock blade, any/everywhere I have been that allows knives allows lock blades, there hace been restricts on length but never lock, and if there was I wouldn't go, I only use lockers, been cut too many times with non-lockers. But it's a cool design, I always have wanted to learn to shave with a straight razor.
