The best Squier ever made?? // Squier 1980's Made in Japan E-Series Contemporary Stratocaster

Ойын-сауық

Squier is known for being Fender's more affordable brand of guitars. The brand also has a reputation for making guitars that span a broad range of quality. In the 1980's, however, the Japan-manufactured Squier guitars were nothing to question the quality of. Could this model be the best Squier guitar ever made?? Let's take a look...

I just got one in pristine condition (with original hard case) for 79.99 at Cash America Pawn in Chicago. Someone was lazy and priced this like a used Squier Bullet, and I couldn’t give them my money fast enough. Flawless, no marks, just yellowing from old age. A keeper, 100%!

I can better you one :) I got given it in an elevator from a colleague when I asked what he had in the bin liner he was carrying! 1983 ... It needed some love but is excellent. I am just about to put new pots, switch and wiring in. White, nice patina fro years of dope and smoke :) This was 10 years ago or so... wouldn't sell it. I offered my colleague some serious money but he said it was just a junk Squier. LOL. Value...?... yea, lots.

I can't help but get a little emotional as i watch this video. My best friend (who was a really talented guitarist) helped me buy this guitar (used) from an older gentleman that owned a music store. I didn't know how to play (still dont) and had no knowledge about guitars so i trusted my friend to test it out in his home studio. I still remember the gentleman telling me that this guitar is older than me. Learning the history of this guitar is bittersweet. Back then my friend would show me chords to strum and he would improvise over it. I bought it in hopes to one day play along with him properly. Sadly he passed away in a car accident shortly after that and the guitar sat in storage for years. I recently picked it up again with a feeling that i owe it to my friend to learn as much as i can before my time is up.

I have an ‘86 MIJ Fender Contemporary Strat and it is identical part-for part. I’ve read that when the Fullerton factory closed after the buyout from CBS all production was moved to Japan because the factories there were already tooled for Squier. The only difference, as I understand, is the headstock decal. It’s an excellent guitar all round and an absolute keeper!

I have one in black with maple neck. It has quite distinct neck shape. It has different "C" shape neck that I never seen in any Fender or Squire guitar. I can see why people love this model. Maybe the playability around the neck. Thank you for a good review on the guitar.

13 years ago was surfing through eBay and found an early '80's Dakota Red Japanese Strat that was for sale at a low price point. The guitar looks identical to yours except it has the standard bridge and tailpiece. Turns out the seller is a professional player of some note which I had no clue about at the time and he was really candid, told its an '83 Japanese manufactured Strat hat he put a Fender decal on and put in Amalfantano pickups. He said he was trying to do his own version of the Mark Knopfler Strat without the 2k price tag. The pickups were wroth almost what he wanted for the whole guitar so I bought it and have loved it ever since, an amazing guitar that plays like a dream and rings like a bell. It's like an old pair of jeans. I am lucky to have some very nice guitars but I play the Red Strat as much as any guitar I own, its that good. Anyway, sorry for the ramble but I had never seen a video on one of these before, great job and very nice playing, guitar sounded awesome and I really enjoyed the video, cheers.

Funny coincidence. I bought a white MIJ E series 70's traditional Stratocaster in about '84, then sold it like an idiot about 6 yrs later, but then it returned to me 20 years later, after some jacked up paint job. I stripped it down to wood and built it back up, finishing it in,...Dakota Red!,.. with nitrocellulose lacquer. I put in a custom-wound, hand built set of pickups, dropped in a ToneMan set of controls with Eric Johnson wiring and Bourne pots (awesome) and updated hardware. Its like one of my children, the long lost prodigal son. lol

Found an E-series, Korea, 1989. $50 Small Alpha's 500K and ceramic pickups, but the bridge is full block and Fender stamped saddles. The neck is the winner . . . Rosewood, medium frets, and the 1.5mm action bars chords E to E from the 1st to last frets clear as a bell.

My first good guitar was a E series Squier Tele. I didn’t like the pickups but I’ve played American Teles that I didn’t like the pickups on too. I still have my Tele and it’s been played for more hours than I could ever guess, it’s the only poly finished neck I’ve ever wore through in places. I still play it now and then and after 35 it’s still great and has a special place in my collection.

Thanks for the video and information! I bought my first (and only) electric guitar in 1986 from a mom and pop shop in Santa Monica, CA. It is a 1986 Squier Made In Japan model. There was no locking nut with the tremolo on my original guitar and it would always go out of tune, so I added a Floyd Rose tremolo system to it (I wanted to be like EVH with my guitar and still play in tune!!) I believe yours has been slightly modified too with that Fender System 1 tremolo system and locking nut. (if it is stock, then it is indeed a later model than mine with yours being a 1987 model with E7 beginning two serial numbers. Mine starts with E6) Btw, mine too is red and white like yours, but with maple neck and maple fretboard. A rare combination, as most were rosewood fretboards! I was a just starting college, and I went into debt when I bought it. It is my first child, and I never think I could part with it!! It is amazing! Btw, in 1995-1999, I actually went to work in Japan. How crazy is that!!?? Anyway, I still have my guitar and I do notice on the back of the tuning machine knobs, mine just say "Fender" while I see on yours they say "Fender Japan". I would post a picture, but can't in the comments I guess this guitar is a little treasure and also has a great story too.....

So I just picked up a new (old) one off Reverb for $650. Same Torino red as yours (maple fretboard) '87 version but mine is standard pickup layout and trem - 100% original and in very good shape. After floating the trem, and other general guitar tech work, I dialed this thing in beautifully. I got this one because I bought an original in '86 that is still mint like new and I love it. Both have the 7.25 radius and original pickups. Both pickup sets are noisy as heck (60 cycle hum) in all 5 positions (no RWRP). But I love their tone so I use the hell out of my noise gates with them.

My Squire is an E-series model made at FujiGen in 1987. I have checked the serial number (E 703022) against Fenders catalogue. If I remember correctly, the first number represents the year of manufacture in the 80's (hence a "7" in mine meaning 1987). Not sure if the , the "3" (0) means March and 22 the day. Don't quote me but I can't say I've seen the (more expensive) modified bridge and string lock on Squires of that vintage. They were budget models weren't they? Mine has the standard bridge and string mounts back from the nut. Still plays so well even after all these years. Made in Japan still means so much more than made in China in respect of guitars.

The craftsmanship and quality was outstanding and I would put it against any MIA CA crafted Jazz basses. It was covered in stickers, a bit scuffed here and there, way out of tune with what looked like the strings that came with it, and very dirty. But man, I cleaned it up, removed all of the stickers except for the Misfits sticker because they're cool, and I play it every single day and it's my favorite guitar. Hey, great content you have here. The MIJ models with System I trems are FANTASTIC guitars. I own a MIJ Fender strat 1985 I bought new. Your Squier is from 1987 (E7) and in fact it is a Squier Standard Stratocaster, in Torino Red color, model number 027-8800. Fender and Squier Contemporary models all had a humbucker in at least the bridge position, among other features. There's way too much confusion on this issue for decades.

@@BobaFettBountyHunter Hi! My statement is based on the experience of those who over the years dated dozens of MIJ guitars, and makes me believe that, yes, E7 refers to 1987. You can go further and check the neck date and the pots date (if they are originals). Fuzzfaced is one of the references that I always visit, Antonio Calvosa does a great job. I just read that they were produced between 87 ~ 88.

I have a handful of these and the fender version. I've been collecting them for years. The price has gone up on them. They are identical in every way minus the pickups. The Squiers of this model had ceramic pickups where the fenders had alnico. Beside's the sticker that is the only difference. While they are great, they aren't "The best". The JV Fender Squiers of the early 80s are considered to be the top contenders. They had American PUs and nitro finishes. The first model with the lone Squier label was the SQ model which came out in 83. It had a 3 bolt neck and had SQ#### and Fender Japan stamped on the neck plate. They had Japanese alnico PUs and a 70s headstock. After that SQ model that ran from 83-84, the contemporaries came out. It is my understanding the Contemporaries didn't come out till 85. Do you have a specific reason you believe yours is an 84?

Had one of those E-series and YES -imho- these are good enough to put them on the same level with many Fender USA models. With that said,I could not get used to that neck. But in terms of overall quality these E-series are a "pro" guitar and not a "toy".

My MIJ E Series, which looks identical to that one, has been my #1 for 30 years. Whole family knows; if the house is on fire forget the cat - grab #1!! I believe - and check me if I'm wrong, that the only difference between the Squier and the Fender models of this series was that the Squier had ceramic bar pickups and the Fender had alnicos. It would be interesting to open that one up and see what she's loaded with. I long ago switched mine out to alnico, but not because the ceramics sounded bad - they didn't at all, but I wanted to be cool, lol. I have since put the ceramic BACK in the bridge position.

I wanted to update this comment I made 8 months back because I have found some information that contradicts it. There are at least 2 other differences in addition to the pickups between the Fender branded Contemporary Stratocasters and Squire Stratocasters of this era. 1. The Fender branded ones have the truss rod adjustment at the top of the neck, the Squiers do not. I think you'd have to take the string locks off to use it, but still easier than taking the neck off. 2. The Fender ones had a micro-tilt adjustment hole on the back plate. I know nothing of how this works, it just looks like a hole in the plate, but I'm sure there is some sort of screw or something in there. The Squires only came in 3 colors; Black, Torino Red and Arctic white. I know there was a sunburst Fender, but not sure of the others. I just picked up a 2nd Squier identical to the one in this review but black. Love it so much. I haven't taken it apart yet, but it appears to be pretty much bone stock.

In '89-'90 during the factory transition they made them in Corona Ca. I just picked up a '89 sn 001189 on the neckplate and made in USA on the headstock. It is better than my '12 squire deluxe hot rails edition and my '94 mim fender. It's not as nice as my '12 American standard fender but it is my number 2 now , it is all stock and sounds close to the American. I haven't looked under the hood yet but everything is tits !🎸🤟🍻

These guitars were as good and arguably better than anything Fender USA was churning out at the time. As with Tokai homage Fenders of the 1970s, Fender USA really had to raise their game to maintain their market share against the Japanese instruments, which were high quality and affordable. Great sounding guitar too.

Most of the FujiGen Gakki "Squier" guitars were just Fender models with the headstock decal replaced. I have an '86 and it plays better than any USA I've owned or played. Most of the MIJ Squiers Contemp Series with humbuckers later 80s product had sealed Gotoh tuners labeled Fender like the guitar featured above. Similar tuners and knockoffs are still made. Not having in hand your guitar, experience leads me to surmise it's a typical 6 screw Fender style bridge tailpiece. Most likely tuning problems are related to setup/ the nut and proper string stretching as the parts used on those guitars were decent quality. Standard not in hand disclaimer applies.

Guitar is later than '84 by a year or three. Not Fender USA pickups. If that MIA pickup tale is true, it's the first series of MIJ Squiers imported by CBS Fender, not what you are featuring which is post CBS FMIC product. If you aren't going to use the bar and work the trem tailpiece on a System I bridge strat, removing the behind the nut lock setup is a consideration.
