You realize that a lot of people are going to want to buy these guitars now. This includes myself. I’ve been thinking how much cooler it would be if I had a handmade guitar and not a A brand name guitar.

I came here after seeing you on Peter’s latest vid. The link on his page brought me direct to your channel page and I subscribed immediately before even viewing one of your videos! That was purely a nod to Peter and the great work he’s done over the years. You must be such a proud pop. I also am interested in your content as I’m a guitar player from wayyyyy back and am thinking about a fix-up to an oldie but goodie guitar of mine that deserves a second chance. Pretty sure I’ll learn some tips here that can help. More importantly, however, I am also a ‘creator in waiting’ so to speak as I’ve been thinking about doing some content for my channel for some time and the video you and Pete made has literally pushed me to just get on with it. Enough hand wringing and putting it off until I get all the ‘right gear’ and the ‘perfect script’ and the ‘ideal weather’ and, and, and... It’s time - I will create!! Thank you father and son.

All my time woodworking, I’ve never seen a clamping jig like that. A glue up with thin sheet boards is always really difficult. I’ll be making one of these jigs for sure next time I have a need. Keep going!

The book match on that rosewood is gorgeous. Is that Brazilian Rosewood? I have always been fascinated with tone woods. One day, I'd love to build my own OM style guitar, but still have a lot to learn!

No, but that is a good idea. That is how I did my first guitar top and I used a plane and filed notches in the blade and then planed the top on a bit of an angle. It worked pretty well then I used and electric sander on it.

I would love to have seen you do the back because I want to see how you would go about adding a center strip. I'm about to join a black walnut back with a zig zag center strip and there's a debate about whether to sandwich it between or inlay afterward.

I have done both. You need a good straight edge for inlay and you must be careful on the depth of the cut. It is not hard to do, just take your time. I like the inlay because the back is still glued together and the inlay re-enforces that. Then with the back strip on the inside you have a good strong joint. Does that make sense? lol

Thx for answering. I did just that for my first two. I was just wondering if jointing directly to the center strip was easier. We all know easier isn’t better though. I will likely just inlay it after jointing.

I've been playing guitar for 25 years but I've never built one. So I'm going to watch your videos and build my first guitar. But my first question is... Why do you glue two pieces of wood together when you could just go buy one piece of wood that is the right size?

If you look at the back of most acoustic guitars they are what is called, 'bookmatched'. This means the timber is sliced so that two faces that were together can be aligned at the join and the grain is perfectly mirrored between them. If you imagine opening a book, the left/right pages used to touch each other but are now mirrored. If you make a guitar out of a single piece the grain does not match like this. A second reason is that some trees do not grow to be large enough for a single piece.
