The Best, Simple Photo Storage, Editing, and Backup Workflow | Lightroom

I was recently asked about my post-production photo storage, editing, and backup workflow and this seems like a good time to talk about that. I mostly use adobe lightroom to import, organize and edit my photos and I'll export to an external hard drive and copy edited files to OneDrive.

    Thank you this is very helpful!! I bought a new computer and external hard drives, and I needed a new way to organize my photos without it being overly complicated. I am not a professional (yet) so I also dont need millions of RAW backups. Just a back up of edits which I keep on Dropbox

    Glad you found it helpful, Ryan! Figuring out how to it simple feels so complicated sometimes haha. I’ve been thankful I started doing it this way as that consistency has made it much easier to find my older photos.

    Thanks for this Liam, I usually just import all JPG and RAW files but I think I'll change that after watching this. I use a 6GB Lacie external drive, sounds a lot but you can fill that quickly. I have photos going back quite a few years.

    You’ve gotta do what works best for you, Drew. I anticipate having a small stock pile of hard drives in the future. Currently I delete all the uncut video files that make up my KZread videos to conserve space.

    This was great Liam, simple and straightforward, wel, done! Do you do anything different when using multiple pieces of equipment for the same event? For example during a recent camping holiday I had footage from DSLR, waterproof camera, drone and my mobile phone all from the one holiday trip, would just dump them into the one folder or separate in some way?

  • @TheLiamGordon

    @TheLiamGordon

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, Scott. I used to always separate them and name the folders “xt2 raw, drone raw” etc. I haven’t used 2 cameras on the same day for a while... other than 2 similar cameras to shoot a wedding. For the sake of organization there’s no harm in having them separate. Although I dump all the raws in one folder for a wedding. The files can be filtered by camera in Lightroom afterwords if needed.

    question, do you have a go to harddrive? I am a photographer and looking to purchase one, ideally I'd like to stick with the same whenever I need a new one... any tips? should I buy at Curries or Amazon?....thanks!

    Dita I don’t have a go-to for bulk storage. I look for something on the cheaper side, but not the absolute cheapest. The last one I got was a LaCie 4tb usb-c and it’s been decent. Just make sure it has the same usb as your laptop. For a little travel hard drive I like the Samsung t5 ssd ones. They’re really handy and fast. Buy wherever you can find it cheapest :)

    got a lot from this Liam, simple is good! I also like your instagram feed and your approach to standardising uploaded photos using squarefit….I searched the app store and there are a number with a similar name-can you specify the exact name of the one you use? maybe the developer name would help me trget the right one. regards from Dublin.

    Does OneDrive support raw files (cr2 & ARW)? And can I create folders to keep them in?

  • @TheLiamGordon

    @TheLiamGordon

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don’t know about arw but you can put raws in folders. However it’s not the best as it won’t show previews and uploads/downloads are slow. I’d say a physical hard drive is preferable for raws.

    @@TheLiamGordon thank you. I checked backblaze and they only support raw preview for 30MB and below. Mine are 45MB so OneDrive/backblaze are about the same. PS - I got an email back from MS saying they support both cr2 & ARW.

    So if I understand, you don't use the Catalog system in Lightroom ? You simply import your photo shoot from your SD card to your whatever stock device, am I right ?

  • @TheLiamGordon

    @TheLiamGordon

    4 жыл бұрын

    I probably wasn’t clear enough on what Lightroom is doing with the files. Lightroom will copy from the SD card and into the folders on my external hard drive, it then uses those copied files and imports them into my Lightroom catalog. I use one Lightroom catalog for the whole year.

    How long does it take to transfer your high resolution photos to OneDrive ? I tried to GoogleDrive and Wetransfer and it takes +2h for 40 photos :-(

  • @TheLiamGordon

    @TheLiamGordon

    Assuming you mean high-res jpegs. It only takes a few minutes to upload around 40 photos. If you’re uploading raw images it’s going to take a lot longer. I keep all the raw files on a hard drive. Your internet connection speed is going to make a difference in upload speed too. Google drive seems about as fast as onedrive to me.

    Not using Capture One? Do the images look good on Lightroom?

  • @TheLiamGordon

    @TheLiamGordon

    4 жыл бұрын

    They look good to me. I know capture one does a better job but the idea that Lightroom trashes the files seems overblown. I’m not really sharpening in Lightroom and I’m not going nuts with the editing either so maybe that has something to do with it. Plus I have Lightroom free for a year so I’m not complaining yet :)
