    I picked up the 18-35 the week it was released, and never looked back. I would occasionally stress over what I'd do if I ever decided to go full frame (video), because I enjoyed the 18-35 that much.

    Gerald, I love your in depth reviews. I've been looking over these exact lenses to use with my Canon 80D for a KZread studio and I've been struggling with choosing between them. I've watched many videos but yours is the first to show them objectively side by side. Also filming this video with the winning lens sold me! As a side note I totally love your intro. I've shared it with others and played it many times. It put a smile on their faces as well as mine:D Great job and thanks for all your efforts.

  • @geraldundone

    @geraldundone

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, it should. XL for 24-35 is fine. For perfect 18-35, you need the Ultra. But if you're fine with the amount of vignetting with the XL, then no biggy. Pretty easy to fix in post too.

    Question: I wanted to take a bunch of lenses(35mm,50mm,24mm) for my sony a7iii. I shoot commercial Videos and sometimes Portraits too. Should I be taking manual lenses(Rokinon/Samyang) or native Sony(or Sigma ART) lenses? This dilemma arouse from an uncertainty of whether I would stick to Sony in the future or change my body brand for an upgrade. Taking a manual lens would make me carry the glass for ages, which the native mostly would not. What do you best suggest? You could either answer, or probably make a video about it =) !

I have focussing sounds loud enough that I fear for the lenses, much louder than what you have at 12:18. I tried the lenses on a a7III, and on a a7IV, where they did not show that behaviour. Maybe I have a setting wrong? Do you have any advice for me in this regard?

  • @geraldundone

    @geraldundone

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, but you'll need a speed booster, so factor that into the budget as well. After the 0.71x reduction is applied, you'll end up with 13-25mm f/1.3. Much better for darker scenes, just not as long as the 12-60mm. And you'll get mechanical focusing, which is easier to pull than the electronic stuff.

    mr undone! what should i do?? i ordered the tamron 17-28 for sony E mount. but i feel like 17 isnt wide enough. not that i shoot wide all that often, but i still do from time to time. i had the 16-35 f4 and the 16mm end didnt feel wide enough. im pretty sure id end up doing something stupid like buying an ultra wide lens, and not use it all that much. so despite the fact that i've been pleased with tamrons 28-75 and based on reviews, it seems like the 17-28 is about as good, and the price of it is hard to beat, i'm considering cancelling the order and getting the sigma 14-24 f2.8 instead. on its own, the sigma costs ~$500m more than the tamron, but like i said ill end up buying another wider lens, because... reasons. also im an idiot. the tamron+ilaowa 10-18 (which is TOO wide) would end up costing a little more than the sony 12-24 f4, which is another lens i considered. i think i should get the sigma, its the best compromise, no? its not as wide as the sony, but id get 3mm on the wide end over the tamron, and even though everyone says you dont necessarily need you wide angle lenses to be that fast... i think id rather keep the extra stop of light instead of getting overly greedy with the more range on the wide end. thanks for your help! i'll make sure to press the dislike button 3(?) times? :D ok.. apparently i cant math... i meant to say ill hit the dislike button 5 times! you the GOAT of camera stuff on YT. you deserve it. ;P

    The 18-35 is a must own lens, especially for a first time upgrade from a kit lens. I use my to do video's, which with the Sigma 18-35 is amazing!!!! I use it with my Sony A7III as well as my Canon EOSR, and its fantastic on both! Again, I get really great video results with the lens!!!!

    Interesting video and got me wondering about few things: so in an MFT mount the 18-35 with 0,71x booster compared to 24-35 with 0,64x booster is pretty much the same in focal length and image quality, but the latter fixes the parfocal issue? Did you happen to notice any quality difference with a full frame prime being used with an MFT mount with 0,71x booster compared to the 0,64x?

  • @geraldundone

    Thanks! Yeah, it's pretty close. The 18-35 is a bit wider, which some people might enjoy. And I do think you lose a bit of sharpness taking the bigger lens (24-35) and reducing it even more with the 0.64x. The results are good, but the 18-35 with the 0.71x is a bit better in my opinion, and you can adjust the speedbooster to address the parfocal. It's what I settled on and am using now. Good question!

    I just picked up the 20mm f/1.4 Art as a gimbal lens on my EOSr. Shooting 4K gets me close to 35mm with the crop and it is sick.

    I struggled with the 24-35 vs the 35mm when I went to full frame but ended up going with the prime as it like the extra stop of DOF for stills. I actually ended up selling all of my APSC lenses when I upgraded but kept the 18-35 and still use it for video for both cameras. I don’t think I’ll ever find a great enough reason to part with it.

    I love the 24-35mm! Parfocal and focus breathing are most important to me. However, B&H always has crazy sales on the 18-35 before Christmas. The Sigma 40mm is also a sweet lens; I've tested the cinema version. Would you ever lens test the Sigmas against the Rokinon Cine DS lenses?

  • @geraldundone

    @geraldundone

    I definitely could, but right now I only have the 24mm, which gets destroyed by the Sigma on anything wider than f/4. The 24mm Rokinon is notoriously soft on big apertures.

    I wouldn't buy the 18-35mm exclusively for the Sony a7 III. You'd be better off with full frame glass. I'd only get it if you were also doing M43 or APS-C video stuff too.
