I always enjoy seeing your lettering. Your passion and skill is evident every time. We should be more proud of our mistakes. They are the proof that we are improving. We discover more from mistakes than from what we get right. Mistakes show that we are doing the only thing that will make us better - writing. And that goes for anything we do. Neuenschwander. Neu en sch wan der / Neuen schwander. Noy en sh van der / Noyen shvander. The 'a' in van is short like 'a' in about. You could also think of it this way, the 'u' in sun or fun is also pronounced the same way. So you could think of van as vun. So, Noyen shvunder. He is quite a famous and innovative calligrapher. This is why he has designed his own ruling pen. I can see why you break so many things. When you made the first few lines you were pressing so hard, far more than is needed. If you aren't so heavy handed everything will still work. Some people are heavier handed than others but firm is fine. If you ever want to try dip pens - square not pointed, the German Brause nibs are good for heavier handed people,English William Mitchell are softer and more flexible so good for those with a lighter touch and Tape nibs are in between the two. The American Speedball nibs are strong and yet still flexible but the reservoirs don't come off so they need a little more care in cleaning and drying so they don't rust.

Milen - try holding your good hndwritmic pen with a Different pen hold. Instead of’ the standard pen hold lay the pen down and then pick it up keeping it laying down against 4th and 5th fingers and pinched with 1 nd 2… and make big strokes…

The main rules for using ruling pens is to never dip the tip and to keep the two points in contact with the paper at the same time. You're meant to load the tip with a paint brush from the edge. As a technical drawer / framer this was torture to see these beautiful pens being abused haha

@@9livesholistic753 This advice is for drafting. For calligraphy, it's irrelevant. The pen he's featuring is designed to be used this way. There is no reason to have a fat ruling pen like that for drafting. And it's been so long that you've probably figured this out, but when he says to load the pen from the side, he means by stroking a brush full of ink on to the side of the pen, between the two plates and away from the point. This keeps the point clean (no ink outside of the reservoir) so that there is no bulb at the beginning of the drafted stroke. Drafted strokes are meant to be extremely clean and consistent, one width all the way from the beginning to the end. Pretty much the opposite of calligraphy. Most uses of ruling pens for drafting were superseded by technical pens, CAD and plotting machines, but framers still use ruling pens to rule lines on to matte board to make borders.
