Great reaction! Courtney LaPlante is who we see here, the vocalist of Spiritbox - the other members are Mike Stringer, usually seen on guitar, Zev Rose (drums) and Josh Gilbert (bass). Courtney writes the lyrics and her vocal melodies, Mike writes the instrumental music - he’s also Courtney’s husband. Courtney’s lyrics tend to be written in a dark, metaphorical and poetic style - she often says she’s happy for listeners to interpret them in whatever way suits them. Often she’ll write about her own feelings, but equally often she will imagine the experience of someone else. She’s very open about being troubled by anxiety and depression at times, too. The video for Ultraviolet was shot by Dylan Hryciuk of Versa Films, who has worked on various Spiritbox videos throughout their career. It’s a very interesting one, as it is a continuous shot, but uses various different frame rates for its effects, meaning Courtney and the dancers often needed to carry out their movements at unusual speeds to get the required effect in the video (note that when she’s moving in slo mo, she is lip syncing at apparently normal speed - very difficult!}. Consequently, it took about 9 complete shoots to get the video that was considered the best one to use. Ultraviolet is track 6 of their 6 track EP, The Fear of Fear, which was released only a week or so before the Cobra remix. The EP has a continuing storyline, with each song fading into the next, mostly. They often have certain lyrical points in common. The track listing is: 1. Cellar Door 2. Jaded 3. Too Close/Too Late 4. Angel Eyes 5. The Void 6. Ultraviolet Even Ultraviolet fades back around into Cellar Door. The lyrics are supplied in the “more” section of the notes on their official music videos. Spiritbox vary their musical style according to what each song needs, so they’re hard to categorise, but basically they’re often referred to as being a band in the metalcore genre, so they can get heavy at times! I really enjoy their music, whatever style they use. 😊

Love the reaction! This ep came out right before the rock remix with Meg dropped. The whole ep is a concept album so it’s one long song.

Very much enjoyed your listen and analysis of this. This is definitely one of their more melodic songs, which isn’t bad, Courtney’s voice is beautiful. They’re very versatile in their style and do lots of heavy songs and even songs you can get down to. If you’d like a heavier song with her harsh vocals, you should try “Holy Roller”, or if you’d like something with groove, I’d recommend “Rotoscope”.
