Hello and welcome to Merriam Pianos on KZread for another piano video. During our first big run-through of all of the popular VST plugins out there, we primarily focused on acoustic piano patches. In today’s video, we’re going to go through some of our favorite VST Rhodes sounds.
Electric pianos, especially Rhodes, are an essential tool in every performing keyboardist's arsenal, so we’re going to look at 4 different VST Rhodes patches today - the Suitcase 73 from Hammers & Waves, Keyscape’s Rhodes patch, Pianoteq 7’s Rhodes, and Logic’s built-in Classic Suitcase.
Please like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell!
Hammers & Waves Suitcase 73
This patch is part of a 10 instrument pack from Hammers & Waves (check out our video on their acoustic patches.) What we have here is a nicely sampled 1973 Rhodes, that is then fed into Hammers & Waves modulation and synthesis engine that allows for a massive amount of variety of textures.
The base Rhodes sound without any modulation is warm and intimate. From there, you’ve got a lot of control over editing the sound here with access to a number of parameters, and there’s a selection of really good presets
Then, you can get into some extremely cool modulation and effects engines. There’s really a ton you can do with this patch.
The strengths of the VST are all of the different presets, a good variety of tonal colours, and the fact that the core sound has been recorded really well.
Keyscape Rhodes
This Rhodes most closely resembles the Hammers & Waves Rhodes, but then gets into a whole different world due to how authentically they record their instruments.
There are a lot fewer synthesis parameters, but instead, there’s a plethora of recording permutations and on-board effects permutations available to you. For people seeking the highest level of authenticity, it doesn’t get better than Keyscapes.
And in this case, there are actually several different Rhodes patches to choose from instead of just one. The classic Rhodes bark really comes through here.
This comes as close as software can get to put you in front of a real Rhodes.
Pianoteq
Pianoteq is going for the same thing as Keyscapes, but in this case, the sound is entirely modeled, meaning every aspect of the sound is synthesized, and you as the user are then given access to all of those syntheses parameters.
With some tweaking, you can get some really authentic, gritty-sounding Rhodes going in here, it just requires a bit of effort on your behalf.
Logic Mark I Rhodes
If you were in a pinch, this patch is going to work. The limitation here is the lack of sample layers, being the variety of tone you get across different dynamic ranges is limited.
Rhodes in reality has a huge tonal variety depending on how loud you're playing.
But, if you spend some time with Tremolo and Drive, you can get a decent Rhodes sound going on here.
Summary
There’s a quick rundown of some different VST Rhodes sounds. We think Keyscape takes the cake from an authenticity standpoint, but as a creative writing tool, Hammers & Waves also has a lot to offer as well.
Pianoteq is no slouch either - the guts are there as long as you’re willing to get in there and tweak the settings.
Thanks for watching!

I really like the sound of the Logic Rhodes. Thanks Stu for this presentation.--Greetings from Memphis, Tennessee...
great in-depth vid on the areas of the Rhodes i wanted to here. I really like keyscape, but ive recently discovered acoustic audio V-Tines MK 1, which i think sounds very realistic.
I used to have one of the early Rhodes with aluminum tine bars, and felt hammers. It sounded better than the later models with steel tine bars. and rubber over wood hammers. The actions on all the Rhodes models was very simplistic. For those that don't know, each tine had a guitar pickup. The tines were an unbalanced pitch fork. A very stiff wire was screwed to a larger and longer metal bar. It was tuned by slidng a little spring up and down the stiff wire which was the part hit by the hammer. The really good one that I had was inside a very modernistic roundish fiberglass body. I also had the stage model, and the suitcase model. The difference between the two was the suitcase model had a built in amplifier and speakers underneath. Actually the original Rhodes sound is pretty easy to synthesize because it's basically a very pure sine wave. The Yamaha DX came out after the Rhodes, and sounded quite spectacular, albeit very thin, Deaodato was one of many artists who made effective use of the genuine Rhodes sound which has lived on. I've always been a fan of Hampton Hawes who is playing with the gritty sound Stu likes. (2nd clip) Not all Rhodes could do that. It was achieved with the electronics in some of the latter models which weren't very common. It seems only top players had them. One negative of the Rhodes was the tine wires broke rather frequently. kzread.info/dash/bejne/rImXqrV8caiTcag.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqBml9OblbK3dqw.html

@Stewart Marshall - a thought: did you check out the 2 Stus phenomenon on his Slow It Down album with Stu Mac? Kensington Jazz Festival on KZread has a splendid and very moving performance by them for all Studious fans.
Stu: You missed AAS Lounge Lizard. Probably the best out there -- physical modelling like PianoTeq (which I have and like) - and made in Montréal. So get a copy and give it try. Regards.
you´re becoming my favourite reviewer
Audio Lounge Rhodes Affair is great vst and Scarbee Rhodes is nice.
Are you going to cover the new Roland Fantom-0 series? Would like to hear your impression of the Fantom-08
The pianoteq one sounds fairly nice. have you tried lounge lizard? it is nice, I have it. But I really want to get Sampleson reed 200 they updated it and sounds like the real thing.
what is your opinion on this vst compaired to nord electro? which one is closer to the real rhodes
Would love a comparison of the Rhodes with Pianoteq 8 and Keyscapes

I still prefer Scarbee EP88. It has a traditional fat and warm vintage tone nice for straight ahead jazz.

I like Scarbee
9:57 - 10:10 thats literally what happens every time I sit down at the Electric Piano... I just end up building these Herbie Hancock/George Duke & Stevie Wonder- inspired harmonic structures. Rip George Duke.

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! You're very welcome! Thanks for tuning in! Stu is an amazing and makes playing on any piano or keyboard look effortless. :)
Hi. Good video, thanks. I am a Rhodes fanatic but have never been lucky enough to own or even play a real one. So, I have to “make do” with a virtual one. EVERYBODY loves Keyscape and I have it myself, but I don’t find the Rhodes sounds like the Rhodes that I heard on countless records in 70’s when I was a kid. I’m not someone that has to buck the trend, and can tell that Keyscape is a quality piece of kit, but it just doesn’t sound right to me! So in your opinion, is the Keyscape Rhodes authentic? Thanks

i also completely agree with You...loove keyscape...(a friend has it) great La rhodes sounds but i still don't Hear the deep, thick dinámic Rhodes of the early 70s which Inlove in that VST...btw i'm a guitar player, not a keyboard plyr but i loove the Fender rhodes
Which M Audio controller are you using? Also is it a 73? Thank you!

Hi there! I would have to ask Stu about that as this is clearly not his usual goto RD2000. ;)
Stu !!! What the heck are You doing playing an "M-Audio" ???? I always see You doing these type demos with Your RD-2000. Is there something unfavorable about the Roland A88mkII ? Seriously asking. I demo'd an A88 at the stores and found it feeling better then the RD-88 even though they both have the same Key PHA-4. Again I'm seriously asking Your Opinion. Thanks, Your Follower Joe D from Philly Pa.

Did you have the chance to compare the PHA4 between the A88 and the FP10/30X? I'm wondering how the same action could feel different om different instruments..

I don't know if you tried this already, but after an ad interrupts, if I then go back a little bit & rewatch what I was trying to see, the ad does not re-interrupt in that place. Sometimes I do that to keep the flow of what is being said / played, especially if I needed to understand better or something lovely was being played that an ad smashed into.

What is it you want from Logic that you haven't found in any other DAW? I thought for years I was missing out on Logic because of being a PC user, until I eventually got a max spec MacBook Pro, and ended up hating it. Go figure. The stock sounds and effects were great, but the usability, performance, customization and compatibility were extremely lacking. I flirted with FL studio and Ableton for a long while, but they both felt kind of gimmicky and not like the stable, powerful workstation I was looking for, so I felt much like you did. Turns out, I was looking for Reaper the entire time, and after working up the courage to invest some time into getting to know it I'm ruined and can't go back to another DAW.

Send your love to Apple who bought emagic (formerly known as c-lab) and stopped PC development of Logic the moment they took control. Logic started on the Atari ST as successor of the legendary Notator SL. They then switched to PC and Mac until Apple took over and pulled the plug from PC to force studios to buy their overpriced computers. I've been a loyal C-lab customer for many years. I put a five figure number of bucks into their products, including multiple Notator licences and Log3 interfaces. I had contact with the devs, reported bugs ... everything was fine until Big Brother took over. So better use another DAW. There's plenty of alternatives like Cubase, Cakewalk, Ableton, FL Studio, Pro-Tools, Reaper and many more. And they all keep the Kraken away from you.

The sonic experience an instrument provides is very subjective and personal. The most important thing is to find a sound that resonates with you and inspires your playing. :)
