Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This week we have finished of the six bay rabbit hutch. Its taken much longer than planned but what good project doesn't. We currently have sixteen French lops and they will all give it a test run by the end of this video. We have also tested out a whole bunch of new songs so let us know what you like in the comments section.

The dropping from the rabbit on the top will fallon the rabbit on the bottom.

Correct, although as the rabbits tend to rest on the wood side it's not been much of a problem. I am planning to add some kind of barrier and slope so that they drain out the back. Hopefully this summer

Looks very professional looking, 16 gauge or 14 gauge 1" 1/2" would be a bit more appropriate for the wire side, but you given them free time and having this beautiful design I think shouldn't be an issue.

I completely agree on the wire, the stuff I used is holding up just about. But I have already bought it's replacement as I can see it will need it. Thanks for your comment

I think that with a few tweaks this could be a great hutch. I'm glad that you already seem to be aware of the potential problems with wood and the gauge of mesh, based on the other comments. It will be interesting to see how the wood wears, my rabbits can do some serious damage to any wood they have access to. It looks like the droppings from the upper hutch will fall into the lower and then hopefully out the bottom of the hutch. I suspect that will cause a mess over time but I am curious to see what it looks like in your update video!

Hi Rahonastream. You are in luck , the update video is already out. So far no wood chewing. I am guessing this is more down to the breed of rabbit than something I have done. So far the only time any of them have chewed wood was when pregnant. I have large plastic buckets underneath to catch all the waste and this has worked really well. I only had one disaster and that was a nipple waterer that broke and filled the waste bucket 😢 They seem pretty happy there spending nights on the wood and hot days sleeping on the mesh

19 gage is pretty thin I think. I use 14 gage wire for them to walk on and my rabbits seem to like it more then the wood they have access to.

@79poisonbreaker you are right about the wire. I'm just in the middle of making an update video. It's working fine but for sure stronger would have been better. As for wire Vs wood , they seem to really like the wire when its hot ( helps to cool down). But hang out on the wood evenings and mornings.

The floor space is 60*120 cm per area. Ceiling height is about 57cm. I will add that they all free range in the garden or fenced area about twice per week.

how do you keep the upper rabbits from using the bathroom on top of the lower rabbits? i didn't see a catch pan under the upper rabbits.

  • @deervalleyhomestead

It was and still is the plan to upgrade to include some kind of pan. There is not one currently. But it's not been a problem. The adults on the top layer have formed very strong habits of always using the same corners. I only clean the adult areas about every two months as they keep them so clean. The kits are a different story, they are not as organised and need regular cleaning. I am planning a host of new upgrades before winter and will be sure to record it. But back to your question, the poops just fall through and the p runs down the wall in the corner.

It all drops into big black buckets underneath the hutch. It's definitely not perfect but I would guess about 95% of it goes down on its own

Thanks for the heads up. It's something I have considered. So far it's staying very clean but I will watch closely and will release an update in a month or so. I have in the back of my mind a plan to switch to all mesh should it become a problem
