THE BEST PRIMER FOR MDF AND WOOD! COVER LASER CUT EDGES!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How many blogs or articles have you seen that talk about the top 5 primers for wood or MDF? Of those, how many just seem to be comparing primers based on what is written on their labels or on suppliers' websites? How many have you read where they perform actual real-life testing?
I've read multiple articles trying to figure out which primer I should use and never found one that showed real-life examples or talked about real testing results. They all just seemed to rank primers based on what they read from a website or label. It was because of this that I decided to do my own testing. I went through eight total primers and did a full comparison using the process I normally follow for painting signs. Which one do you think is the best?

    to be honest none because you need to seal the edges sand the edges and re seal the edges then put 2 or three coats of primer sanded between coats then apply the finish spray cans are pretty useless unless your surface is perfect Super glue on the edges works wonders

    @@MakerExperiment would the Valspar Primer be safe to use on a child’s dollhouse made out of laser-cut mdf? Do I need to wear a special facemask when using this spray, or is my daily Covid mask acceptable? Does the Valspar smell up the dining room for days if I use the dining room table as my workbench? Also, since this is for a child’s dollhouse, what paint/ spray paint works best with the Valspar? Do I need denatured alcohol (or any other chemicals/ supplies) for some reason? Will it be difficult to apply wallpaper/ scrapbooking paper to the mdf once I’ve used the Valspar? And, once I’ve used the Valspar and white paint, do I need some kind of top coat? Any help is much appreciated. I’ve never done this sort of thing before and don’t know where to start.

    @@Steampunkkids it should be safe to use as long as children aren’t playing with it when it’s wet. I recommend wearing a paint mask when spraying it. It’s still a primer and will smell. I’d recommend spraying it outside. I don’t know if wallpaper will work on it. In theory it should as long as you’re using the proper glue for it but I don’t know how to apply wallpaper. As far as a topcoat, that would be more for protection. If you’re using wallpaper, you probably don’t need it.

    I know this was over a year ago and you probably have this comment somewhere, but excuse me if I don't read all 95 to find out. I have to go watch some paint dry. :-) This: You can't expect the edges to get covered with paint unless you specifically spray them. Overspray from spraying the flat surface is only ever going to marginally cover all four sides. I always paint the edges of projects first spraying directly at them and then paint the main flat surface. I held my tongue until you kept comparing how the edges were not covered and then I had to say something. Thank you for doing this test. It was very well done (except for the edges. :-)) P.S. The edges always absorb paint faster and more of it than the flat surface. That is one reason you have to spray directly at the edges first. On some woods, it takes me 2 coats to cover the grain on the edges. (or end grain)

  • @MakerExperiment

    @MakerExperiment

    Жыл бұрын

    You’re correct. I normally do spray paint my edges. More often than not I have people tell me they only want the face painted and wonder what happens to the edges. That was part of the purpose and I failed to explain that. Sometimes I miss things after filming for a long time.

    @@MakerExperiment Hey! Thanks for a reply. I know you understand I was just trying to be helpful. I was also wondering if the irregularities in the paint at the edges of the flat surface was due to residue from the laser cutting. I haven't noticed it so much on my 80 watt CO2 laser with air assist, but I have only been cutting 3 and 5mm ply. No MDF yet but since I am getting a 20W Xtool D1 Pro and also an Ortur 10W Laser Master 3, I want to run some MDF for layered art. Both will have air assist. I guess I will see what MDF does. Even though I know they will cut slower than the 80W, I wanted something easier to set up and use in a smaller space. My OMTech 80W is huge. Thanks again.

    I would start by sanding with 150 or 220. Then I would prime it. Sand after primer with 220. Apply second cost of primer or first coat of paint depending on look. Final sanding I usually do 220. You don’t want it to be too smooth or the next layer won’t adhere to the layer before.

    First things first. I have learned quite a bit from watcing your videos. You have been my go to most anytime I have needed help. But now maybe its my turn to help you. First using rattle cans is always a challenge and they produce challenging results. I understand money is most always a challenge. However buying a professional tool that lasts you many years and creates an excellent result is worth the investment. It's time to switch up to a HVLP turbine unit. I would suggest the Less Expensive Earlex Pro. An excellant price point and a top notch tool. You will be able to lay down a very smooth surface with less sanding. You will be able to do those edges with ease. You will be able to paint inside with almost no overspray. You can produce a fan from about six inches down to 3/4 inch. Spraying this way also drys in minutes and not hours. This will be a game changer in your process and your business. Your expense for materials will be much less than rattle cans and give you the professional finish you are looking to achieve. I encourage you to check this out. Save time and money.

    @@MakerExperiment Yeah I decided to go with your recommendation, Rustoleum 2 in 1 seems easier to find so I went with that. Great video, there is a ton of information circulating saying to use Shellac and how it's just the best yada yada. What's crazy to me is the number of professionals that have done it 20+ years, but they don't ask these types of questions. It's probably one of these guys that wrote the articles about Shellac, a lot of Woodworking guys were saying to use it. The proof is in the pudding though, the only way you know if something is better than another is simply by testing it.

    @@artv4nd3l4y shellac does a good job if you just want to paint the surface of MDF. If you want to cover the laser cut edge that turns black, shellac won’t do that. You may be able to cover it with shellac and paint, but the lighter the paint, the harder that is. If you use a good primer, it isn’t a big deal.

    You should have cleaned off the smoke and residue before priming.

    The whole point of this was to find a primer that could cover it straight off the laser. The smoke and residue as you can see, didn’t affect the priming.

    Wow, you must be rich to waste so much paint by going 12" paste the board on both sides!
