The BEST Portable Washing Machine Available. Danby DWM17WDB Washer Overview and Demo

This thing cleans clothes so much better than the new "high efficiency" washing machines that use spinning discs to gently swoosh clothes around. The Danby cleans like the washer I grew up with, and is built better than most portable washers. Ideal for spaces that don't have dedicated washer hookups, because it hooks up to any standard faucet (it comes with an adapter).

    I bought one from Walmart, first one got damaged upon delivery, now have the second working one. I absolutely LOVE the machine. Even the light wash cycle is great for most heavy washes. Extremely quiet when level* during the spin cycles. * Machine must be Level ! It's fantastically quiet, I can talk on the phone or have a normal conversation at any point during the wash cycle, whilst a mere 2 feet away from it. It cleans fantastically! A really, really good machine, with the good old agitator, a must have for good cleaning not, that stupid wish-it-washed plate on the bottom. Get one whilst you can..!

    INCREDIBLE MACHINE! We bought this exact washer primarily on this video and the other "Load o' Laundry" video . . . . WOW! GREAT videos dude . . . they did exactly what they should. They showed the washer working and pointed out it's features, etc. Your video sold one! BTW . . . . in our initial runs today, the machine was no more than 73db during the wash cycle. Easily the quietest washing machine we've EVER owned. We got it from Office Depot online for $315 . . . less than $350 with shipping via freight to our door.

    Thanks! I'm glad you're happy with it! Over a year later, mine is working like the day I got it. I hope yours treats you guys well! The only update I added to mine, was a zip tie loop around the drain hose, to easily hook it back onto the machine after use.

    Holy Crap, I didn't know it had a lint filter! There was nothing about it in the owner's manual. I just checked mine, found it, and cleaned it for the first time. Thanks! Mine is a Danby Designer (16 years old) and still works great. Last year I replaced the drain hose (a little leak midway) and the filler valve (cold water wouldn't come in) and now it runs like new. I'm going to find a space for it in my RV. Jon

    Old video but still good.. Great portable washing machine.. Wish these were around about twelve years ago.. I lived in a small apartment accross from the beach.. It had No washer/dryer hookups, and No laundry facilities on the premises.. Every Saturday I had to take time to go out to do my laundry, and the local or nearest laundromat was way downtown in a very busy area with only street parking.. This would had made life so much easier. The Dandy does a great job and quiet too..

    Use white vinegar in your wash and it will take out stains, remove extra detergent and make your clothes softer and static free. For a smaller washer you will probably use only 1/4 cup or less in the wash. It takes hair off dark clothes as an extra benefit.

    The machine is overfull. Three large towels is too many. Overloading your machine will cause unnecessary wear on the moving parts. Danby is a division of Maytag, and they do make amazing portable machines, but it is just a machine after all, prone to wear. We had a Danby portable dryer that ran for over 20 years with no issues or repair required. They stopped making them for 2 decades. I just purchased a new Danby dryer, and have ordered a washer. I'm excited. Thank you for sharing your review of the machine.

    Been using a small Haier washer. Ok for bicycling/workout clothes. Laundromat otherwise. Replaced belt on motor when spin cycle faded and then failed a couple years ago. Spin cycle fading again. Had the Haier for years, so time to replace. What to get? Searched on the web and this Danby was an option. Reviews? Ran a google search and found this video. MANY thanks for a stellar review! All the details we needed in the context of real-world use. Our new DMW17WDB washer arrived yesterday. Holds more laundry than we thought. And works even better than expected. The center agitator makes a HUGE difference. Not a full-size washer. But definitely a big step up from our Haier.

    Reminds me of the old family GE big machine, just scaled down. The integrated removable lint filter is different. The GE had a round lint filter that fitted over the top of the agitator and served as a dispenser for powder detergent. BTW, I watched a demo of a Haier machine before this one and it vibrated and made noise on the spin cycle. The Danby is a BIG improvement over that one.

    To keep air-dried clothes from coming out too stiff, use WHITE VINEGAR. It also helps them rinse better. I like to do a second wash with just cold water and a cup of white vinegar. It's also an odor killer for socks, underwear and shirts.

  • @VacTech1

    @VacTech1

    I'll have to try that! Does using vinegar leave the distinct odor of vinegar in the clothes afterwards? P.S. If you're this hardcore, ditch toxic dryer sheets! They coat your clothes in a waxy coating of poison. I have no interest in wearing that!

  • @yootoob4516

    There is a slight odor of vinegar, but nothing after drying. I air-dry clothes -- only use the dryer if I need something in a hurry or something has a lot of lint (towels, flannel sheets). I never used dryer sheets. I don't have many items which contain acrylic or polyester, so I don't have static cling issues.

    For your DRYER, there is an INDOOR ventilation system, that has the exhaust directed into a fitted bucket 1/2 filled with water. Lint blows into the bucket of water and NOT flying around in the apartment ... I Love this item. got it at Canadian Tire (had the lesser cost). In the '70s I had a Hoover portable (much smaller than my GE SpaceMaker) ... at that time, I just secured a couple of pantyhose to the exhaust ... it worked beautifully too

    Thanks for a very informative video. I have a much more basic compact washer (twin tub with agitator and spin dryer). I love it and it does a great job, but I wanted to see what was available in the higher price ranges (mine is right at $100). I'll stay with mine for the time being but wanted to give you a big thanks for your tip, right at the 2:05 mark. I have the same problem with my drain hose and have not found a decent solution. I basically hung the hose on its clip on the side of the machine with a bowl under it to catch any unexpected drains until I would drain the machine at the end of the cycle. I think I am fairly resourceful but your idea was simple and perfect. I've done five loads of laundry since I watched this a few days ago and everything is a much smoother process.

    I could not imagine a apt, house, or any other living space w/ out a Washer/Dryer hookup. I have an older front loading set from Whirlpool, and I could not imagine not having those things. They make laundry easy and no problems. I'm not saying this review of this washer is bad, its a great alternative, but I need a full size washer and dryer to keep up with 7-9 loads a week. I do not have alot of time to do laundry so spending 30-50 minutes a day to wash and put them in the dryer is fine with me.

    Agree with you ...those low profile agitators don't work worth shit. Wondering if this sprays fresh water during spin cycle? My Kenmore from around 2000 doesn't have that spray function but it works as beautifully as it did the day it came out of the box. It shows no sign of wear owes me nothing. I run it on permapress so it does the main wash.drains half. refills.finishes wash.fully drains & spins. refills, rinses and then drain & spin. I then run half an additional wash cycle to make up for not having fresh water spray during spin. BTW an advantage to roll-to-the-sink machines is that they use one spout *unless you have it in a laundry room connected to two faucets -I have ALWAYS run HOT WASH/HOT RINSE ...I use Liquid Downy to protect colour and then tumble dry on LOW/DELICATE for a short period of time. Whatever the cost of using hot water is MORE than offset by the short drying time at low temperatures ....rinse in cold water and your dryer has to work THIRTY MINUTES just to get the temp up to luke warm The dryer is where fading and elastic deterioration take place ...I have deep coloured 15 year old towels that are only JUST beginning to show wear in plushness ...the colour is like new. The ONLY things I don't wash in hot water are SILK & LEATHER. I even wash wool in hot water and block it to dry. Don't know where this fad of washing in cold water came from ....want to do an experiment? Try cleaning BY HAND something oily or inky with cold water and any detergent ...then try the same type of stain using hot water and NO DETERGENT -you'll get most of it out!! IT'S ALL WELL AND GOOD for detergent manufactures to say you'll save money and get just as clean clothes in cold water ...you won't ...and if the detergent is THAT STRONG ...you're clothes are going to be worn out quickly. Cold water detergents however perform even better in hot/warm water PLUS you use FAR LESS. If anyone wishes to fact check something I learn years ago when I considered writing a book: The Science of Cleaning ...agitation of clothes in the wash cycle beyond TEN MINUTES redeposits the dirt onto the clothes ...if they are that dirty do two shorter washes and be sure to measure your detergent NOT by how much water you use but by the dry weight of the laundry ....taking into account how dirty the stuff is ....a mechanics overalls are going to require presoaking and spot removal before a hot wash......bath towels VERY LITTLE detergent and minimal wash time. Have Fun!! xoxo :)

    The Danby does two full rinse cycles (works great, and fully rinses detergent out of the clothes). It does not spray during the spin cycle. That was a fun feature, but less common these days.

    I just bought this. Waiting for delivery but I had the previous version and it was awesome. Then after 8.5yrs it finally fucked up and didn't stop filling up one day-lucky I was there-it still agitated if I reset it a few times but it had the biscuit-many yrs of service-I have teenagers. I paid 700$ for it but it will pay for itself in 5 months-because Laundromats are bullshit-4$ a load 3$ a dry and of course the washer is set to medium-not large-and its on 'economy' 7mins wash-for 4$ fucking bucks! Then an extra 50c ifg you want an extra rinse. Total rip-off and not really hot water-whereas at home I can have scalding hot water and use the extra cycle and it gets rinsed and spun twice. Man, smoke a joint and have aglass of wine and watch the wash cycle-Im telling you rainman was on to something, lol. Cheers. Worth every penny. Remember Im in Canada and we basically pay twice what the rest of the world does-not sure why-we cant afford it. That why we get portable washers.

    Get the laundry balls instead of the using the detergent. Detergent has so many chemicals in it and they don't rinse out. Can give you body rashes and everything is freshly when you get older. Qvc.com used to have laundry balls. That's where I got mine and they clean the clothes really well. I just throw them in with the wash. Never need laundry detergent again.

    All you have to do is attach the washer hose to the faucet, and turn the faucet on to the desired temperature (currently doing a load of wash clothes in hot water). The washer handles the rest. If you end up with one, I hope you're as happy with it as I am with mine!

    Thanks so much for taking the time to post a video. I have been debating on buying something like this and I am amazed at the spin cycle. My question is, how much noise does this make? My second home is a small first floor condo unit and do not want my neighbors to hear it. What are your thoughts? Also, any recommendations on a small dryer? Lastly, how do you like the Beach Body Fitness Program?

  • @VacTech1

    @VacTech1

    8 жыл бұрын

    +G W Grote Good eye haha! Beach Body has a lot of great products, and I like being able to work out in my living room with DVDs. If you're on the first floor, you should have no issues with noise from the Danby, or disturbing neighbors. I'm on the second floor in an old building, and have no issues regarding bothering neighbors. With the stabilizer foot down, I don't feel it vibrate the floor during the spin cycle at all. The machine is very quiet (just a very quiet motor hum and the water moving around), but another owner commented that they disagree with me. The spin cycle is the loudest thing about it, but once up to speed it's quiet. I can't hear the washer on the other side of my apartment. I haven't given the shared paid machines in my building a second thought since owning it, and I couldn't be happier. I've been happy with my Panda dryer as well, but I got it for a great price. Works just like any dryer should, but the lint filter is a pain to clean. Unlike the Danby, I really have no reason to recommend the Panda dryer over other models, as the new ones I looked at appeared to be of similar quality and function. I would only recommend using one of these portable dryers if you're able to vent the dryer exhaust out of a window, as it will put a lot of moisture back into the air if you don't. If you use dryer sheets, it would spew a lot of toxic moisture back into the air. Ventless dryers are becoming available in the US, but they're still really pricey. Good luck, and I'm glad you liked the video! I've saved a fortune on laundry using these machines, and in my current living situation, I have no regrets with either purchase. The Danby also gets my clothes a lot cleaner than the gross shared front loader I used for years.

    Hi there! This washer can wash 1 queen size comforter at a time, but it's a good idea to keep an eye on the machine when doing so, to make sure it doesn't fault. I haven't had any issues. I suppose I did luck out with the closet window for the dryer. It's worked out great! The washer takes 35-40 minutes for an average load of laundry. Since the machine is in your home, you can wash as much as you'd like, at your convenience! I hope this helps, and I can't stress enough that having a washer at home makes a world of difference, even if you can't also have a dryer.
