Thanks Andy, you remind us about return on investment (ROI) of time because time is the most valuable thing that human have. And then you tell us about opportunity cost because it's very important to doing something can give us the most value in this limited span of life. Well done!

i feel like the phD fields that will also take over in the future are those related to climate and climate change like sustainable developpement, it's been the fastest growing field because it can be related to all the others in a certain way

Yes, the last piece of advice was the best one and should had been the only advice. It's only a PhD who would understand that value of money is zero. Be happy with how you are, where you are and what you do.

Great video, Andy, excellent advice, as usual. My twopenneth...Where money is concerned.....the only thing that really matters is future proofing that!... getting the very best pension you can at the end of your career...then you can afford to do what you want to do and keep yourself warm and fed!!!!! Tiny tiny figure here, waving a flag for The Arts! I am deliberately doing a PhD in a topic that has never been looked at academically before, specifically to generate debate about it in the future, and give it an academic life of its own. If, years after I and the subject of my PhD are gone, two or three under-grads are getting gently drunk in a university bar somewhere earnestly debating the importance of The Monkees in popular culture, before they graduate and go on to have boring jobs staring at a monitor all day, then that's return enough for me! The Arts? Future proof? Well, those early humans didn't write scientific experiments on the walls of those caves, they gave us their art!

Thanks for the video! I am doing a PhD in documentary filmmaking, and I am self funded. This is not the most lucrative or promising career path, but at least it’s somewhat enticing and relatively uncomplicated. Some people might be thrilled to summit the Mt Everest, but I am happy with Mt Kilimanjaro.

What about a phd on machine learning and statistics with a focus in solving physics? Its like the combination of cs, maths, statistics, and physics

Thanks for this video. I’m a registered nurse and I’m applying for a PhD with focus on nursing workforce and covid. Hoping I can pivot either into nurse academics or return to work with the health department. Feel nervous understanding the difficulties with obtaining tenure at unis, but nursing seems to still be in demand and not a lot of nurses do PhDs. What are your thoughts?

If you're accepted into a program, I recommend talking to programs about what positions their graduates typically go into (tenure-track, postdoc/visiting, adjunct, etc) so you have a better idea of the outcomes. Good luck!

Perhaps it would be good to put a disclaimer that you are oriented towards STEM fields. Humanities and social sciences matter and you are just perpetuating the false narrative that it isn't. Unsubscribing if this continues.

@Valencia Lomeli ㅋㅋㅋ The world as it is, you say? The world as it is currently functions on disinformation and fragmentation, which is hugely part of comms and media studies, which is part of the social sciences. Note, too, that the KZreadr himself shifted from a job in the academe to a job in industry to now being a KZreadr because of the realization that he wants to be in comms. 🤷‍♀️

@@asianistlife You are creating a false narrative. There is no data to support your ideas that humanities is a growing field. Case in point, Florida is considering stopping college grants for any field outside of STEM and business because of the lack of real options. YOU are the disinformation.
